Michael,

Thank you so much for your instructions on exporting from Science Direct.
It took me a minute to find the Export button (it is so small), but I kept
looking since you said it was there. I tried it and it worked perfectly.
I'm going to pass this on to our users immediately.

I use EndNote 4.0.1 with Science Direct routinely, and have no trouble
exporting files directly to EndNote. It defaults to looking for a library
in the EndNote root directory, so I use a temporary library from which I
move new references into their respective appropriate libraries at the end
of a Science Direct session. It works using either Netscape (4.75) or
Internet Explorer (5, 5.5). After checking the boxes of the papers of
interest, choose "export," which sends you to a new screen. Select
"Citations" or "Citations + Abstracts" under Export as you wish, then leave
the default format "RIS format (for Reference Manager, ProCite, EndNote)."
It then asks you for the EndNote library to which you want the references
exported. Note that if you have other references in that library, they
will not show in the first screen. You will have to go to the menu
"References/show all" to display them.

I hope this helps.

Dennis;

I routinely import records into EndNote (version 5, and now 7) from Science
Direct from the RIS/ProCite format. It connects to EndNote directly just
fine, though I have to move to other directories usually to get the
references into the libraries of my choice. The only problem I have
occasionally is that if there are large lists of papers and you only check
certain ones, sometimes Science Direct doesn't give you the correct choices.
I've told them about it, and progress has been made, but it's still not 100%
fixed. However, if you first do "display only checked documents," then it
always seems to work.

I do not own ProCite. If you do have it, then there must be a problem with
some setting for the file association that triggers ProCite to load instead
of EndNote. Maybe other users have worked this out, or EN tech support. I
just wanted to confirm that EN does work quite well with imports from
Science Direct.

Hello Dennis,

I wish I could explain how I get the popup...but it appears
whether I use IE or Netscape, and it appears whether I'm in
ScienceDirect, Web of Knowledge, EBSCO databases, ProQuest
etc. ...any of the databases that support export.

So I think it's not a browser setting, nor is it specific to
just Science Direct, but rather the interface between Export
in RIS format and all three software products (EN5,RefMan10
and ProCite5). And unless my memory is wrong, I got the same
popup waaay back in the 90s when Endnote was still owned by
Niles and very few databases offered export except Web of
Science.

Are both ProCite and Endnote residing on your C:drive in
Program Files? That's where all 3 of mine are located.
That's the only variable I can think might be at work in your
situation. Oh, I'm still using Windows98.

Perhaps Endnote tech support can be of more assistance than I
can at this point..sorry...

have a nice day,
virginia

Hello,
I had the same problem once two years ago, and I installed the export
plug-in (http://thomsonisiresearchsoft.com/support/export/). After that a
pop-up windows opened in order for me to choose between Procite and EndNote.

Hope this help.

If I understand your problem correctly, it is a matter of selecting a
preference within the style you're using. In my version of Endnote (6 for
Mac) this is the path you take to select it:

Edit>Output Styles>Edit [Stylename]>Bibliography [or Footnotes, as
desired]>Capitalization>Leave Titles As Entered

Either of the other preferences overrides your capitalisation in the
'sentence' or 'headline' style.

I hope this helps.

Virgina,

Hmmm, interesting. I did not get a popup asking me which application I
wanted to use, it just choose Procite for me. I'm using IE is there a way
to change the pre chosen choice of procite?

Does EndNote function on PDAs that run the Pocket PC operating system? I am
thinking about buying one of the iPAQ PDAs, which runs this scaled-down
version of the Windows OS. If EndNote does run on these PDAs, is there a
minimum hardware configuration that I should shop for?

Thanks,

Hello Penney,

To my knowledge there is no way to do what you want to do. I too found this
frustrating when I went from EndNote 4 for Windows to version 6 for Mac.
Yes, the "bug" has been around for at least a version. As for a workaround,
instead of exporting the entire reference to Word, I usually open the record
and copy the field I want.

From: "Chris Bell" /> Subject: Word locks up OSX/Endnote

Hi Friends,

I'm a new member of this list and am already presenting a problem :-)

I'm having problems on Mac OSX Jaguar with Endnote 6.0.2., Build 407

Hi, when I type in my Word Document, all the sudden, without explanation,
Word will give me a rainbow-colored wait cursor and never stop showing this.
I can click off of word and use other applications, but Word is effectively
frozen.

This happens just while I'm typing, not doing anything fancy.

The only thing that is different with this document and many others I've
written on this computer with Word is that with this one, I am using EndNote
and inserting references.

Do you have any ideas on why this is happening? Any tips on what I could do
to determine what the problem is? Are there any patches or the like that I
should apply that will help stabalize this?

Does it seem that my document is somehow corrupt? If so, how would you
suggest I go about transferring it to another document?

Thanks very much for any advice you can offer?

Chris

Thanks, everyone. I can't believe the mac version is doesn't have all
the functionality of the PC version. Don't the developers check these
things? Looks like the only way to copy a single reference is with
command-k (copy formatted), and if I want to copy part of a reference
I'll have to open its record. The command-k trick does pretty much
solve the problem for me, though.

I am having problems downloading complete citations from Science Direct
- whether I choose "citation" or 'citation and abstract," the author's
name and journal name are absent. Other details such as article title,
volume, issue and abstract are present in my EN library.
I am connected to my university's library from home via a VPN link and
do not have this problem with other journals or databases.
Using EN7.
Many thanks for your advice
