Dear Dr. Hoffner,
I have the same problem as you but with more than just the umlauten --
see below. (I am running a Mac G4 Ti Powerbook with OS 10.2.8 and EN 7)

This did work for me however.

This problem is more than just with the umlauten. Any name/word that
requires you to type OPTION + TWO letters does not work (i.e., accents
in French, the n + tilde in Spanish, etc.). However, if the accent is
generated by pressing ONLY option + ONE letter (such as Option + a for
Swedish å or Option + q for oe (oe ligature), etc.), there is no
problem. It is only when two keys must be typed after the Option key
that the problem occurs (thus Option + u + o for ö (o-umlaut).
Are Windows users experiencing this problem as well??
Now if Endnote would only support Unicode (and Word as well) then the
problem would hopefully "go away".... We can but dream...
Best,
Troy Sagrillo
