Corrupt file
Author: Jim Freeman    Posted: 13/10/2001 22:32:42 GDT
I'm have a major problem. I just installed the 5.0.2 update, although I
don't know if this is the cause. All of a sudden in the last ten pages
of my 60 page document all the citation have been replaced with what
looks like raw code from the EndNote database. It shows all the field
names and all the data in the fields mixed right in with my text. If I
try to format or unformat Word crashes. I can't even select the
offending code to delete it because my cursor grabs a bunch of the
surrounding text. I would welcome any suggestions. CC: me directly since
I am on digest.

Thanks,

Jim

An update to my last message. I removed the 5.0.2 update files and
replaced them with slightly older ones that tech support had given me to
download. I'm not sure if 5.0.2 was the culprit, but since the problem
coincided with 5.0.2 I'm not taking any chances. Then I retrieved a
backup file from before the corruption, copied the new corrupt text
into a text editor (Word wouldn't let me edit it), removed the EndNote
code by hand, and copied the text into my back up file.

I then worked on the file for several hours, inserting EndNote citation
freely, and the corruption hasn't repeated itself. I'm keeping my
fingers crossed, but the whole thing was very disconcerting.

Argh, this is what I was afraid. I have had enough problems with long
Word documents corrupting that when I read that Endnote was
embedding even more information in the Word file it made me think
more than twice about upgrading.

Is there anyone out there who think any of v5 features are worth the
update and is willing to convince me of the fact :)

Dear Adrian,

Having asked a similar question recently, so far, no one has written and
said that v5 has any upgrade facilities which make it worth the update. This
is embarrassing, because I already had requested that our IT department buy
the upgrade and they are waiting for me to tell them I have finished testing
it and they should roll it out.

In fact, it sounds just the opposite.

Is 5 worth it (was corrupt file)
Author: Jim Freeman    Posted: 16/10/2001 19:27:55 GDT
Coming from the guy with the corrupt file, I want to say that cite while
you write is pretty cool. I hated editing citations by hand (which way
does that slash go again?) and having to format the document all the
time.

Spell checking is pretty useless.

The CWYW interface could use some work. I hate the lookup feature. I
switch to endnote and type the first letters of the author I want and
usually find reference much more easily. I also wish there were a way to
automatically enter the edit citation dialog when inserting a citation.

And it **really** should have been written for Mac OS X!
