There is an update of EndNote v5 to 5.0.2, which fixes an annoying problem I
was having in Microsoft Word2000. I haven't seen this announced here, so I
thought I'd mention it in case others are experiencing the same problem.
The problem was that Word's ScreenTips, which used to display in a sort of
popup the contents of a footnote or comment when you rested the mouse cursor
over the footnote number or comment, had stopped working in my Word2000. I
traced the issue to an interaction with EndNote 5.0.
There is now a bug fix for this, in EndNote's 5.0.2 updater. The website is
http://www.endnote.com/support/enupdates.asp. Enjoy!
(BTW, although I have installed the 5.0.2 version, and it fixes this bug
which was not fixed with the 5.0.1 updater, the "Help About" dialog box in
EndNote still says it's version 5.0.1.)

Thanks Mike,
It would have been nice to hear direct from ISI Research! ;-)

I'm experiencing crashing of Word 2001 for Mac when screen tips appear. I
use Endnote 4 for Mac. Could this be the same bug?
I have consulted the Mac-Word list without any ideas forthcoming. But this
sounds a promising lead. |

Now I'm confused. I was having problems with Word 2001 crashing every
time I tried to format citations. I called technical support and they
had me download some files which fixed the problem. These are apparently
the same files referenced below. But I also have the problem where
footnote and other pop-ups don't appear in Word. These files haven't
changed that, nor were they intended to, apparently.

I should have said "your milage may vary" :-). But all seriousness aside,
since I updated to 5.0.2, I've tried adding new citations, formatting the
bibliography, putting in new footnotes and comments, etc., and popups seem
to work properly now. So if they were the same download files, and if Jim
is running Microsoft Windows (as opposed to a Mac, say), I have no
explanation for why they still don't work on his system.
BTW, the file I downloaded is EndNote5Cwyw.wll, size 620,296 bytes, dated 11
October.
I'm running Ms Windows 2000 version 5.00.2195, service pack 2, and Ms Word
2000 v9.0.3821 SR-1. EndNote was v5.0, which I first updated to 5.0.1, and
now to 5.0.2 (although as I say, the "Help About" box still thinks I have
5.0.1--but I can testify that the problems with popups did not go away with
the 5.0.1 update, only with 5.0.2).

Ahhh. You're using Windows. I'm new to this list and I didn't realize we
were all lumped together like this.
So I've looked at this update more carefully now. The one on the web
does seem to be different from the one tech support had me download. The
files on the web are date 9/25/01, while the ones I downloaded are date
9/5/01. So I installed the ones from the web (carefully setting aside my
previous files just in case). It still doesn't resolve my problems with
pop-ups. The interesting thing is that I was able to get a footnote to
pop up after "unformatting citations", but when I reformatted citations
the popups were gone again.
I don't know if this is related but I use Word in "Document Map" view
and I occasionally get crashes when I mouse over headings in the left
column that are too long to fit in the column. The full heading will
open as a popup but the box will stay white and the program will be
frozen.
