I am trying to format a bibliography from a list of references. I am
using Endnote 4 and Word 97 on a PC.
Every time I try to get the bibliography formatted, it returns many,
and I mean many, "mismatched citations". I mean, I ask it to
format 2 references, and it tells me there are 49 mismatched
citations!
I've checked for viruses, I've rebooted, I cut and pasted into another
document, but the result is the same.
I pulled out all the year 2000 references, and put them into a new
bibliography, and then just used that one, but it is still bringing up
citations that don't exist on the the database.
ANy ideas on what is happening here?

This one has happened to me a few times. My problem was that the marker for
in text citations (usually []) was also being used in the document in
references to legal cases which also used square brackets. It is easy to
fix, edit the preferences in Endnote to use an alternative citation marker,
such as {}.

My guess would be that you use whatever your temporary citation markers are,
probably [ and ], to enclose things which aren't real citations. Either (a)
ignore it if you really want to use square brackets in the article or (b)
change your temporary citation marker in EndNote to something you are not
using in the main text, e.g. and {}
This should fix your problem.

I had a similar problem. It was caused by using square brackets as the
delimiters for temporary citations in the text I was working on, and also
using square brackets to add implied words into quotes in my text. EndNote
then read the interjected text as a temporary reference, obviously failed to
find a matching reference in the database, and reported each occurrence as a
mis-match.
The easy solution was to change the temporary citation delimiters to
'squiggly' brackets - and {} - which I never use in the text I am
producing.
