Dear EndNote interest list subscribers, dear people at Technical Support,
My newbie questions to you regard the 'Repeated Citations' feature of EndNote.
(1) How to control the appearance of repeated, shortened citations (author,
short title, cited page(s)) in Word 97 footnotes?
It seems as if shortened citations are formatted according to their
corresponding 'Footnote Template', including all 'Forced Separations' and
'Link Adjacent' fields. In my case, this produces undesired results. For
instance, the 'Book' 'Template'
Author, Title (|Edition;.City|:.Publisher|,.Year),.Cited Pages|.
results in citation:
"Maurice Duverger, Political Parties: Their Organization and Activity in
the Modern State (London: Methuen, 1954), 25."
and in repeated citation:
"Duverger, Political Parties (89."
I have experimented with the fields, but nothing led to the desired result of:
"Maurice Duverger, Political Parties: Their Organization and Activity in
the Modern State (London: Methuen, 1954) 25."
and
"Duverger, Political Parties, 89."
Is it possible to modify/customise EndNote's handling of repeated
citations? Or am I overlooking an error in my Footnote Template?
(2) My second question concerns repeated references to non-standard
'Reference Types'.
My problem is the following. I need to refer to pieces of Russian
legislation incidentally. My 'output style' is an adapted version of what
is current in the humanities (I have based it on the MLA and the Chicago
styles, shipped with EndNote). My citations occur in footnotes (Word 97,
running under Windows 98).
When I cite, e.g., a presidential edict for the first time, I want it to
look like this:
Edict No.90 'On the Property of the CPSU' (Ob imushchestve KPSS), 25 August
1991, Vedomosti S"ezda narodnykh deputatov RSFSR 35 (1991) item 1164,
article 7.
The corresponding EndNote library fields could be these:
[Type of Legislation][Law Code][Title][Russian Title][Date
Adopted][Published in][Number][Year][Section][Cited Pages]
Further appearances of this citation in the footnotes should look like:
1991 Edict 'On the property of the CPSU', article 8.
Or, in field terms:
[Year][Type of Legislation][Short Title][Cited Pages]
In order to benefit form the Author-Short Title-Cited Page(s), I have
included several variants of 'dummy authors' (such as '<Legislation>',
'Legislation' and 'ZZZ'). However, the result usually is that with two or
more of identical 'dummy authors', a repeated citation is given in its
full, rather than its short, form. For your information, the mentioned
pieces of legislation were entered into my Library as a custom 'Reference
Type', where the fields such as 'Author' and 'Short Title' are at the same
position as in the default 'Reference Types'.
Could you provide me with any directions of how to proceed further? Your
input will be highly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your help!
Ruben
