I should have asked this question a long time ago, but now want to go
back and fix this issue I have with storing archival records. For
anyone out there strong on bibliographic theory, what is the best way
to deal with these records? In other words, what fields to use, etc.
I should say I want to rely on standard fields where reasonable, in
part because I'd like to be able to easily migrate data to RIS or Refer.
So, the documents I have:
1) Generic archival records: reports, unpublished papers, etc. I
assume I should just choose the closest reference type rather than the
"manuscript" type I previously used, and then add information on
archive, collection, box, folder, etc, but to *which* fields? Better
to keep the data more generic (and hence portable) and rely on standard
fields, or to use custom fields?
2) Memos and letters. The way I formatted them in the diss. is
something like:
Smith, J to A. Jones (1968). memo. Acme Archive, ABC collection, box
25, folder x, record 123.
Is this the way to go? The "to" thing is a little nonstandard from the
perspective of Endnote...
I could also imagine doing:
Smith, J (1968). memo to A. Jones. Acme Archive, ABC collection, box
25, folder x, record 123.
Any advice greatly appreciated!
