This posting is probably only of interest to those who design and conduct
EndNote training for end-users.
At QUT we librarians conduct EndNote training principally aimed at PhD and
Masters research students, and academic staff. We offer only one course
loosely termed "Basic EndNote" although we have flirted with a course known
as "Advanced EndNote".
We try and make the training sessions as "hands on" as possible. I
personally eschew use of PowerPoint in my training and concentrate on
actually demonstrating features, then allowing trainees to repeat and
experiment themselves using the EndNote & Word software. I have as a guide
a "21 facet training checklist" that I tick off as each facet is
demonstrated and experienced. See my 21 facets at the end of this message.
Basic EndNote training sessions need about 3 to 3.5 hours (allowing for a
10 minute coffee break).
Barring those who are very IT literate (with exposure to database concepts,
and who are expert in Word and Windows) most of the feedback we get is that
we attempt to cover TOO much in these 3.5 hour sessions. We are a 99%
windows site.
Some users sign up for a repeat of this course to try and better grasp the
concepts.
We plan to release ver. 6.0 to our user public in 2003. As the software
grows more complex and given our trainee feedback, I envisage us offering a
three tier Basic, Intermediate and Advanced (for want of better
descriptions) training programme.
I would be most grateful if you are currently training users in version 6.0
if you would be prepared to share your course structure, outlines and
objectives.
Basic EndNote Training Checklist (ver. 5.0.1)
1. Obtain the EndNote software
2. Launch the EndNote program from Microsoft word
3. Open an existing EndNote library
4. Create your new EndNote library
5. Set a default library to open on startup
6. Add records to a library (keying manually)
7. Backup your EndNote library
8. Open links to a file (document) ~ launch URL
9. Search for text within a library
10. Sort records in a library
11. Change displayed fields
12. In text citations
13. Inserting citation(s)
14. Adding pagination
15. Format bibliography
16. Setting bibliographic output styles
17. Download and install the qut library catalogue connect file
18. Add records to an EndNote library via online search using z39.50
connect
19. Add records to an EndNote library via direct export
20. Filter imported records from a flat ASCII file
21. Define term lists

Hello, All ...
Thanks again to those of you who provided copies of your training
materials.
I had only one hour for my presentation, so I did the following:
* Put together a short PowerPoint presentation listing links to
various helpful Web sites (including some of yours) and phone numbers
for local people with some knowledge of EndNote and the various
bibliographic databases.
* Then I ran the class through the short interactive tutorial
available on the EndNote Web site (version 4 but better than nothing!).
* Finally, I provided the students (all working people pursuing
doctorates in business administration) with handouts from the library
containing info about how to log into the university's databases from a
remote location and about the relevant databases themselves.
Some of you asked to see what I ended up producing. I'm happy to
forward a copy the PowerPoint presentation to any of you helpful souls
who want to see it -- though, frankly, I doubt if you'll learn anything
from it.
Thanks again!
Cheers,
Sara French
