Use the suffix for the additional information, inserting the space and punctuation into the suffix field when you edit the formatted citation. The cited page info goes in the cited page field and the rest in the suffix field. this works, I tested it with APA 6th. However, the unformatted citation looks like this: {Takahashi, 2011, #132,`, fn.3@23} with the ` sign before the punctuation and the suffix in front of the @cited pages field. reversing them in manual trials didn't work, as the numbers were interpreted as part of the cited pages field and wirer and wonderful things happened. alternatively type exact what you want after the record like this: {Takahashi, 2011 #6826, p. 199, ill. 459} and that works too, put the cited pages need to be typed as you want them to appear with the p. for example, or pp. if multiple pages. once formatted and unformatted, it will appear as this, but if entering it manually, it doesn't appear to require the insertion of the ` in front of punctuation. {Takahashi, 2011 #6826`, p. 199`, ill. 459}

Not quite. I need to use Chicago with this paper and I am getting unwanted punctuation. A period after the abbreviated title. Exactly, I get this: Rice, <it>Art of the Byzantine era</it>., 199, illustr. 181. I don't want a period after title, just the comma like all the other citations. What am I missing. If I use suffix, again, it adds an unwanted period.

This so way beyond my pay grade as I never use footnotes containing citations, let alone cited pages! If there are always cited pages or suffixes you can remove the punctutation from the short title template, but that is probably not the right answer. You should use the cited pages and suffix fields as they are, although you still have a problem if you want a suffix but not cited pages. If I use the cited pages field and the suffix field, then it works? I get the comma. I agree that the entry of the whole information into suffix gets the errant punctuation that you describe, as does just having info in just the suffix and no cited pages. I just noticed that with a suffix, you then you get a ., after the cited pages, and you probably don't want both there either? I know there have always been Endnote forum discussions about punctuation rules in footnotes, and now I can see why! So this is when I go back to writing my paper and hoping the publishers will clean up the copy once it is accepted, or have someone with attention to detail clean it up before submission (on a copy after having stripped the endnote fields!)

Hello Barbara Ervens, What web browser where you using? You may want to try a different browser to see if that will change the behavior. You will also want to make sure your version of EndNote is updated to the latest version. If none of that helps please let me know and we can check a few other settings on your machine.

In order to be able to import this data, the text file would need to be in a tagged or the appropriate tab delimited format rather than the bibliographic format. See the section in the EndNote Help File for "importing" and then "creating files EndNote can import" for more information. I suggest that you look at this thread and at the threads referred to in that thread, to give you some ideas of what is possible and what others have done to address this problem, including some external tools. Good luck.

You can but it depends upon what version of EndNote you're using. The current version of EndNote (X5) offers an option for hiding in-text citations (numbered or Author-Date) while retaining the corresponding bibliographic listing. Once the citation is hidden in-text all you need to do is manually type the desired text "1, 2, and 3".

Thanks for the fast reply. Although I am not quite sure if I get it. I already added my citation and chose the appropriate format for the journal (Amer J Cardiology) . Unfortunately the numbers in the text are shown as 7-10 and the journal seems to require the in the following format "7-9 and 10". Do you mean I have to hide (delete?) them in some way and manually add the citation in the appropriate form. This would mean I have to go through the whole manuscript and if I add new citation I would have to change them manually again. Isn't there a automatic way?

Unfortunately numbered citation styles (like Amer J Cardiology) are not as easily manipulated in EndNote as the Author-Date styles and yes, you'll need to manually adjust each one. (Maybe submit a suggestion regarding automating this type of formatting on the EndNote Product Suggestion section of this forum as a future software enhancement.) So to change citations "7-10" to "7-9 and 10" will require EndNote's "Edit Citation" feature* to manually edit the citation to "hide" (not delete) the numbered citation. Hiding the citation then causes the "7-10" to "disappear" while retaining the corresponding bibliographic entry. Now that the citation is hidden it's just a matter of manually typing in "7-9 and 10". But the big caveat is that this only works for EndNote X5. If you're running a lower version of EndNote (X4 or earlier) hiding numbered citations isn't an available option. ____________ *Note: To edit an in-text citation, place your cursor on the citation, right-click to display a submenu then select option for displaying just the bibliographic entry.

I checked a few of the articles in the "free issue" and can't see any that used this kind of numbering scheme? see http://download.journals.elsevierhealth.com/pdfs/journals/0002-9149/PIIS0002914911025458.pdf as an example?

A Boy and His Tree A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree.
