Anyone know how to get the first name of an author abbreviated in
Journal of Animal Ecology style? When I go to edit it, it does not give
me that option.

Were you thinking of initials or do you want say "Wm." for "William"?
The J Animal Ecology style should give you initials with periods but no
space "W.J."
