If you want a numbered bibliography, modify a copy of the numbered style
to sort entries by author. Numbers are added (to your document) when
formatting your bibliography.
If you want numbers throughout your library, this is stored in the
record number field. It is not possible to modify these numbers.

If you really want a numbered bibliography ProCite has this option, so
if ehough people ask Thomson the feature just might turn up in EndNote
Xx.
