Leanne : thank you for you answer.
But yes, I have done that (and I just tried again). The problem is not
only for my own customized styles, but also for every "pre-packaged"
style I have used (as Chicago 14 A and B).
I have even tried another document / making a new library / using
another computer (with a different operating system !) to no avail.
I should add I am using Endnote 7 : maybe it is a problem only with this
version ?

Have you looked at your style and modified the footnotes template
section to say "use Footnote format" and in the repeated citations
section, I assume you modified the Special handling section
appropriately?

Hi,
I am having a strange problem : whatever I choose as a style, whatever
changes I make to it, I cannot get Endnote to treat consecutive
footnotes references with "Ibid".
Has anyone run into this problem ? Any clue on what I can do ?
Thanks,

What if you take off the first option, use short form. Does it work then?
It does in my set up (word xp, endnote 7)

Hi,
I had tried every setting to not effect (even on a windows version of
endnote and word).
But I am happy to report that I have now found a workaround : I have
formatted the document with endnote 4, same library, same style (but
Word 2001 and Mac OS 9.) : this time it worked. I then unformated the
citations, then I moved back to endnote 7 and word v.X : it worked
(well, except I have a difficult with the way it treats cited pages
(i.e. it doesn't) but that is easy to solve (take the page references
out of the field)).
I realize that sounds more like mojo mojo than serious computer
troubleshooting, but, hey, if it worked (maybe something happened that
I did not notice), why not ?
Thank you for your help,
Guillaume

Did you ever unformat everything and reformat? I sometimes have a problem
that already formatted references don't get updated, when I make a change to
the style, and it was especially a problem when I was in an upgrade phase;
manuscripts that had been worked on with an older version of Word or Endnote
combinations didn't format properly, until I selected all, unformatted and
reformatted the references. Maybe that explains the mojo mojo at work here?

Hi,
Yes, I had. So that does not seem to be the key (I did spend 4 hours
with the document before moving to the Endnote 4 "solution")
I agree with you it sometimes solves problems.
Might it be the case that even after unformatting Endnote 7 leaves
something behind that constrains the next formatting ? (and that
Endnote 4 does not take into account, thanksfully ?) But that seems
strange.

Yes, leaving something behind.... I do note that the Endnote 7 doesn't
always delete the reference list, even when it unformats the document...
Maybe after unformating, one should try the remove all fields command or
at least the remove endnote links? That might have done it. Thanks for
the full history of your travails.
