Has anybody managed to come up with a way of exporting data held in
EndNote in US MARC format, suitable for uploading into a library
management system?

Dear Mr. Wales,
Exporting EndNote (or Reference Manager or ProCite) records in a MARC format
isn't possible at this time, and probably never will be (not only for us but
for all personal bibliographic manager software everywhere). You could
approximate it by creating a MARC export style (I might be pursuaded to try
one to see how far I could get), but what EndNote or any other program
couldn't do is decide which tags and subfields to use (e.g. 100, 110 or 111?
440 or 490? 500 or 504? 100 or 700?) because of the complex rules
governing their use; it couldn't take information from a field and assign
parts of it different tags (such as various data in the Notes field) because
that data isn't delimited in any way (there is no concept in EndNote of a
field within a field); it couldn't assign indicators (i.e. the two numbers
which sometimes appear after tags) because for many of them only a human
could decide which ones to use; it couldn't produce fixed field data because
that requires certain human choices; it couldn't convert the data to AACR2r
standards (at least unless the data was entered into the EndNote library
according to those standards in the first place), and so on.
A program that could do this would be such a feat it would probably have a
name like MARCMaster Deluxe 3000. It could make the MARC encoding process
easier for the user by asking him certain questions then assigning tags,
indicators and subfields as appropriate. This functionality is highly
specialized; for us to adopt it would be to radically change the basic
purpose of EndNote. I couldn't say we'd never attempt it (I personally
would love to be a part of that project!); all we can do for now is to
accept your suggestion and consider it for future versions of EndNote or
perhaps a new ISI ResearchSoft product.
The above opinions are my own and are are provided here in the spirit of
discussion only; they do not necessarily reflect the opinions of ISI
ResearchSoft.
Kind regards,

Tim
The Library of Congress had something called MARCMaker once. I have not
used it so could not tell you if it suits your purpose or not but
possibly worth trying.
but as Geoffrey says converting Endnote to MARC can be a rather complex
process in just getting the bits into the right fields etc.
