Sys failure after Format/Unformat
Author: Benderfromson    Posted: Mon, 10 May 2004 08:56:52 -0400
I originally created my document (dissertation) with Wordperfect 8 and
Endnote 7 (upgraded from v2). When I discovered that my operating system
and WP version were not supported by Endnote I upgraded my system and
converted my document to Wordperfect 11.

I then formatted my bibleography to check the output. Once checked, I
selected "Unformat Citation(s)" and continuted to edit my document and add
several new citations from Endnote. When I attempted to again "Format
Bibliography" I received a message asking if I wanted to keep my changes, I
selected "yes." pushed "enter." The result was a message indicating that a
"fatal system error" had occurred. and Wordperfect closed. Unfortunately I
had 3 documents open in Workperfect at the time and only two of them
appeared as "backup" copies when I reopened Wordperfect. Of course, the
document I lost was my edited dissertation (I had to begin again with an old
version.)

This event has occurred more than once (luckily I now have dual back-ups of
everything before I attempt merge.) I have a Dell Dimesion 4600 series with
Pentium 4 at 2.8GHz, 400 MHz, GeForce FX5200 graphics card.
and an XP operating system.
When this event occurred the third time I checked my system in the middle of
the event and saw that I was using 50% of my CPU capacity. I am still
within the 21-day time period for returning the system. Has anyone else had
this problem--how much power and speed do I really need? I explained to the
sales rep the requirements for my programs (Word Professional, Wordperfect
11, NVivo, and Endnote.)

Sandy

Just a caveat about WordPerfect from an Oold long-term user (since 4.1 for
DOS). It has always had some instability in tieing to linked support
programs. Sorry you lost your dissertation edits, but it has happened so
much to me in the past 18 years that I now as a matter of routine "save as"
ever file in the deck before I use any linked program from EndNote to
spell-check to graphics updates. I'm told this dates back to ancient code
from the original CPM port, but that's beyond my pay-grade.
