I have been having a problem with Endnote 7 in which it crashes Microsoft
Word X
(with all service packs installed) on my machine. Here is some information
on
the platforms with which I have had the problem (which causes me to lose
everything I've typed - it crashes upon save):
Platforms - Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3 with all updates installed.
Office X with all service packs installed.
It seems that after a while a document which uses Endnote becomes
"corrupted".
As soon as I open a document with Endnote, make changes (changes do not have
to
be to endnote related parts of document, if I type a character at the
beginning
of the file and click "save" it tosses Word into an endless loop. I have to
forcefully shut it down, and the changes I made are lost.
It seems I can recover the document by opening the file I want to use,
selecting
everything (without making changes), then pasting it into a new, blank
document. I can save this new document with changes - for a while, then it
will start having problems and I'll have to repeat the process again.
Below is the output from "ps -auxww" which shows Word using lots of CPU
cycles.
Endnote is not using a lot of CPU cycles when this happens and still
responds
to user input. Word, of course, has to be forced shut by the "graphical
kill
command" in OS X.

Below are is a web address where I have posted two documents:
http://www-cs.canisius.edu/~leitgebj/to_bugfix/
1) out_bad.doc always crashes Word when it is saved with changes.
2) out_good.doc is the document I created by copying the former and pasting
it
to a new document. For the moment, it is "good" and doesn't crash Word.
If anyone figures out a personal fix, or if Endnote posts a bug fix for
this can you let me know? This is really frustrating.
Cheers,
Justin

Do you have track changes on? You will need to accept all changes and
try turning off track changes.
The following post from John McGhie on the
microsoft.public.mac.office.word news group should also give you a few
other pointers as to what might help.

Hi,
I have had the identical problem - Word X crashing on save. And with
the same solution - copy the entire document into a blank document. I
have always blamed this on Microsoft.
I was never able to track down the source of the problem, but I
suddenly realized on reading the post that I only had the problem on
files related to my thesis (where I used Endnote). Work-related files
are fine.
I have just done some further checking. I opened a Word X template that
I had created from a file used for my thesis some time back and it
crashed on saving again. Endnote would appear to be the suspect.
Hope this helps.

I had this same problem, nearly identical systems, as you describe. If
you run top while this is happening, you will get a clearer picture of the
CPU use - and it is all Word. My theory is that there is a VB flaw here.
I am about 90% certain that you have CWYW turned ON. This is the likely
problem. Turn this OFF, leave it off. If the problem comes back, then
remove the various prefs files that have been extensively reported on this
and other spots (like Endnote site).
Once CWYW is off, I believe that you will no longer have any difficulties.

The third-party fields from Endnote can corrupt documents. But the most
common source of Endnote problems is the CWYW add-in, which creates problems
for all documents, whether EN has been or is being used or not.
So Jim, I would check whether possibly your thesis template may be corrupt.
The first way to check for a corrupt document is to
copy the entire thing, *excluding* the last paragraph mark, into a new
document. That last paragraph mark holds a lot of information which can get
corrupted, and copying the text into a document with a fresh one keeps your
formatting, but can fix some glitches.
A paragraph mark is a gray ¶. Click on ¶ on the standard toolbar to show
nonprinting characters, including paragraph marks.
