Using Word 2000 on a Gateway PC, I am writing a large document which
includes several graphs. The title for each graph is in a text box (from
the Drawing Menu) and usually has a reference, as in "adapted from <name>
[author, year, #xxx]", with the Endnote reference within the [...] bars.
When I give the command to format citations those within the text box are
not formatted. Other than manually going into the text box and inserting a
superscript number corresponding to the citation, or perhaps deleting the
text boxes and creating the title in regular text, is there a way that
Endnote can recognize these citation references?

Hi,
Try converting the text boxes to frames (the old version of text boxes that
still exists in word). Text boxes are in general superior to text boxes for
formatting but unfortunately linking to fields inside a textbox can't be
done (eg cross referencing to a field based caption number). Look up word
help under differences between text boxes and frames for some more details
on that. But back to the problem at hand. The formatted endnote citations
are also field generated, so it's possible that you can't have them inside
text boxes. Maybe converting to frames will help the problem. To change to a
frame, select the text box, right click "format text box" on the context
menu ( or go via the format pulldown menu), go to the "text box" tab of the
dialogue box, and click on the "convert to frame" button. That's it. But be
warned resultant frame is likely to move to a different position, so you
will have to re-position it.
Good luck
Matt

Since text boxes are in the drawing layer of Word, not in the text
layer, it is unlikely there is any solution to this. Is it a viable
option to convert the text boxes to frames (which live in the text layer)?
Several formatting and cross-referencing options are denied you when
you use text boxes (eg you can't use columns, bookmarks can't be found
from the text (although text bookmarks can be found from the textbox).
You may get an answer from the newsgroup
microsoft.public.word.pagelayout. I noticed this post there this week,
from Suzanne Barnhill:
A useful KB article in this regard is Q167738: "General Information
About Floating Objects." It discusses document layers and explains
when a frame is preferable to a text box. You can read this
file online

Hi
I use a table since this can manage endnote citations.

Sorry if this has already been replied to - I get the digest of this list
once a day.
I seem to always end up converting text boxes to frames (an option on the
final tab of the "format text box" dialog). Frames are the older Word
approach to handling text box type jobs, but their contents seem to be more
transparent to things like EndNote. Another benefit is that I can use the
cross reference feature of Word (under the Insert menu) to refer to the
figure captions (eg "Refer to Fig 7") where Fig 7 is a link that adjusts
when I move the figure or insert another figure. This also doesn't seem to
work with text boxes.
Regards
Matthew

Hi,
I think this is not an Endnote, but a Word restriction.
You have the same problem if you include a caption into a text box (eg.
Figure #, where # is automatically numbered. With a caption, the only way I
know is to put the cation within the text, non ptintable characters, and
link by a bookmark, Thanks Microsoft!

Hello,
I don't use Word (I like Wordperfect better), but I think I have heard
that, in Word, if you use something called "frames" instead of text
boxes, then Endnote will be able to find and format your references. I
believe there is a way to automatically convert text boxes to frames.
Sorry I can't be more specific.
