If searching for a word that's a single letter (i.e., "A"), put a blank space after the letter.

Thank you very much! But it doesn't work for my case. When I search "W " with "Match words" option, no results are found when there is a reference with "W ".

That's odd as selecting "Match Case" then typing a letter followed by a space (without enclosed quotation marks: A ) seems to work for me. Just running through a checklist: 1) Are you placing the search criteria (e.g., W ) in the correct search field (i.e., Title)? 2) Are you omitting enclosed quotation marks?

Thank you very much for you help! 1. Yes, I put the "W" in the correct field. 2. Yes, I have tested both "W " and W with a space without quotation marks. None of them works. I want to use "Match words" to distinguish the references with W, vdW, Water and etc. I used Endnote X3. Could you tell me what version are you using?

Thanks for the info. I'm using X3. I was able to search by single letter but it seems to work when using Match Case, not Match Words. Given your search parameters which seem to include both case and word(s), have you checked both the Match Case and Match Words options?

Thank you for your help. I used both "Match Case" and "Match Words" to distinguish references with W, water or vdW. The problem is for "Match words", and it seems that it works well for at least two letters.

When all else fails, it's time to check the manual. Page 235 lists two caveates for "Match Words" and "Match Case": "With 'Match Words' selected, EndNote finds only exact matches to the search term, rather than partial-word matches....." As for "Match Case", it appears the feature is case-sensitive so the entered search term (or letter) must appear exactly the same as what's in the records.

According to the manual, when I search "W" with the options "Match Words" and "Match Case", I should not find the references with such as Water, vdW, but actually I get the results with Water and vdW. Maybe the single letter is not considered as a word in EndNote. But for me, W is the the symbol for the element tungsten. (it is obvious that W is convenient to tungsten)

It does seem that way (single letter is not a word) - which might make sense in some instances and clearly doesn't for yours. Perhaps this is something to take up with tech support and if anyone on the forum has insight on using Match Words/Match Case and their limitations, post your comments.

The shortcut alt + F9 doesn't help anything, because the settings of the field codes aren't just changed - the field codes have disappeard completley (only the bibliography is still ok). is there a possibility to fix this? What you have showing is the unformated endnote inserted items and CWYW is off. This is different than "field codes" which are complicated gobblety goop, which the alt+F9 displays or hides. At some point, either on purpose, or inadvertantly, you unformated the Endnote in-text citations. This turns CWYW off. You need to run the endnote tool "format Bibliography" or "format paper" and then reengage CWYW (on a PC, word2003, this is the third tab of the format dialog box) and hit okay. I am not sure if the interface is the same with Endnote X3/Word 2008 on a Mac. Rafi wrote: - second, the cite while you write window has disappeard... ? Perhaps this is related to the fact that CWYW is currently off? again, not working with the operating system and Word version you have, I can't be certain.

Dear Stima, I am using X3 and word 2003 In my template the Call number was already in the "Case" Reference Type, so I am surprised you have needed to add it. Are you sure you haven't duplicated it? Is there any occurrence elsewhere in your Case Reference Type of "Call" or "Number" on their own. If so, it might be trying to pull from those two fields instead of the "call number" field. I added "Call number" (from the drop down insert field list) to the Chicago style "Case" Bibliography template, added info to that field in a "Case" record, and it worked for me. I attach my modified version of the style.

Hi, Now it works! Thank you so much. The problem was, a you suggested, in the Reference Type preferences - I had managed to add Call number twice. When one was removed and the information moved to the right field it worked. Thanks again for taking the time to answer! /Stima

I probably should have said. I'm using Word 2003 on Windows 7.

For group authors/organisations, put a comma at the end, eg BBC News Online, Cheers John

I know this thread is now considered closed but I've just had the same problem with a two letter name. I tried finding Li in my references, for which I have 4 as the primary author, and kept getting the 'no results' comment back. I've just tried your suggestion and it worked. I thought I would let you know that one letter words are not the only issue. Thanks for the help you probably didn't even realise you were giving.

Strange. Are they footnotes or in a bibliography. Have you tried (on a copy) unformatting and reformating? What platform and what version of word?

Maybe there are compatibility problems between EndNote X1 and Windows 7? Â I would start by checking the file type associations. This page explains how to do that in Windows 7. Â The .ris file type should be associated with Web Export Helper. I think that was the name of the helper application used in earlier versions of EndNote. (It's now called ResearchSoft Direct Export in version X3). Â Even if it is correctly associated, I have heard that you sometimes need to disassociate it, and then reassociate it, to get it working properly. Â Some databases use .enw files for direct export. They should be associated with EndNote. Â Â

Dear John, Â thanks a lot for your answer. Endnote X1 is supposed to be compatible with Windows 7 (http://www.endnote.com/envistaand7.asp). I checked the file type associations and switched them once and again back. No change. Finally I updated my version from X1 1.0.1 to X1 1.0.2 but this only changed my problem. Now nothing happens when I try to import a .ris file. I see my endnot library without any process. Â Best regards, Â Chris
