long URLs in references
Author:    Posted: Wed, 28 Feb 2007 14:16:09 -0500
If you include URLs in your citations, and you are using a two-column
style, then the URLs come out looking awful, because the lines are all
too long.

Is there a way to convince Word to break an EndNote-created URL at a
slash character without inserting extra hyphens that would make the
hyperlink invalid?

I tried to manually edit the citations, but I found that I would have to
change each hyperlink to normal text, one at a time. With a lot of
citations, this gets very tedious, and of course, once you have done it,
you can't let EndNote reformat the bibliography again.

I would have thought this a common enough problem, but I searched the
EndNote archives and couldn't find any discussion on this.

Any suggestions?

Rather than edit the citations why not replace each URL to be cited, in
your library, with a short URL. You simply paste the long URL into a
box in either of the services below and you will be given a short URL.
TinyURL http://tinyurl.com/ or DigBig http://www.digbig.com/ Admittedly
it's still going to be a bit tedious.

Relying on tinyurl and digbig could be a problem, we dont know how long
these start-ups may last. I have had occations where I found the
original website in the url not existing anymore and had to find the
citation elsewhere by googling keywords from the url in the original
citation. So I think it serves to have the "real" url in the citation.
