Author: Sameer Badarudeen    Posted: Fri, 2 Mar 2007 13:25:45 -0500
Hi everybody,

limitation?
I usually name the PDF with the full title name..
thanks
Sameer

What's the limitation? I tried linking to a PDF with a 255-chars long
filename, no problems. The field size limit is 64K, but you'd need some
15 nested folders named with CJK chars to reach that...

Thanks for your reply Alex,
Can you name a PDF like this, "Readability Standards for Informed
Consent Forms as Compared with Actual Readability.pdf" and then try
"link to PDF". Its giving me the error message "Could not add link."
regards
Sameer

Dear Alex,

I observed the same problem (EN X, Build 2283). In my experience the
length of pdf file name is limited by 92 characters. The possible work
around would be to add pdf files as "object" rather than "pdf file".
"Insert objects"
option does not have this kind of length limitation. I hope this problem
could be fixed soon.

P.S. As an example, I can not add as "pdf " file article under the title
"Chemical Amplification (CHAMP) by a Continuous, Self-Replicating
Oligonucleotide-Based System", but after truncating last "m" in the
title that would be possible.

Regards,
I Smirnov

Just to let others know that Sameer is not alone. I have experienced
this problem also. I end up having to truncate the title name in order
to get the PDF link to work. In my situation, I am using ENX.0.2,
WinXP. The original PDF is nested within several folders, if that
matters. As well, I am creating a relative link, so that a copy is
created for the EN library.

Yes. It works just fine for me (the file name does not include the line
breaks, naturally). Here's how the field looks like if I export the ref
in EN Export format:

%>
file://localhost/Volumes/Reference/Articles/Medical/
Readability%20Standards%20for%20Informed%20Consent%20Forms%20as%20Compar
ed%20with%20Actual%20Readability.pdf

(Note that it includes the full file path.)

> [...] Its giving me the error message "Could not add link."

Sorry, can't help you there. If I were you, I'd

(1) Make sure I have the correct EN version, with all applicable
updates.

(2) Make sure it's the file name (rather than the file path) that's the
problem. (Try changing the file name and/or moving it to another
directory.)

At any rate, I find long file names troublesome; IMHO, if the article is
indexed in PubMed, the PMID (in this instance 12594317) makes a much
better file name.

Hi Sameer,

I'm able to link a pdf file with that filename you gave with no
problems. But yes, there is certainly a limitation.
What version of EndNote are you using?
What is the error message that appears?

Regards,
Andre Wu
