There is an error in the APA5th style shipped with EndNote 9 (and probably
EndNote 8 also).
In the Citations>Author Lists section of the style, the setting for
subsequent citations of a reference should read "3 or more authors", not "6
or more authors". For the first appearance of a reference, "6 or more
authors" is correct.
I have notified technical support of this. The version for download from the
EndNote website contains the same error. However the EndNote 7 version is
correctly configured. I suppose this was one of those errors which crept in
during the rush to release EndNote 8.
This error was pointed out to me by a sharp-eyed postgraduate student. I was
puzzled why nobody had reported it to Thomson. Perhaps this is because many
people who have upgraded to EndNote 8 or 9 are still using the EndNote 7
styles, without realizing it.
When you upgrade to version 8 or 9, EndNote retains your preferences from
the earlier version. So your folder locations for styles, filters and
connections will still be those of the earlier version, not the current
version, which has installed in a different directory.
To check your folder locations, click on Edit>Preferences and select Folder
Locations. If you are using EndNote 8 or 9, the path for each folder should
include the 8 or 9, e.g. the path for the Styles Folder in EndNote 9 should
be: C:\Program Files\EndNote 9\Styles
