Mac users:
This isn't, strictly speaking, an EndNote issue, although it happens every
time I want to use the Ovid databases' direct export feature to put
citations into an EndNote library. Ovid appends a .cgi extension to its
search results. You can configure Internet Explorer and Netscape/Mozilla
to automatically open EndNote any time they see a .cgi file, but you
can't--at least that I've been able to figure out--do the same with
Safari.
My EndNote students who use Macs mostly love Safari (so do I); it's much
faster than the other three web browsers. But there's this major flaw.
Any ideas how to get around it? I downloaded freeware on the web that
supposedly would accomplish this read-file-extension-and-open-program-X
operation, but it didn't work. :-\

Hello Buzz Haughton,
Can your users turn off the popup blockers in Safari?
When one of our Mac users with Safari encountered problems with Direct
Exports from our licensed scholarly databases last winter (GALILEO), I
advised her to add Netscape and use it with the scholarlies which don't have
popup advertisements. And continue to use Safari for all other websites.
That solution worked just fine.
It later dawned on me that maybe there was a way to turn the blocker off but
I couldn't load Safari since the library mac is OS9.2 and Safari requires
OS10. And I never asked her to look for the turnoff..
Now that Netscape 7 and IE 6 offer popup blockers as well, I advise folks to
turn off the blockers whether Mac or PC when searching scholarly databases
so they can exploit Direct Export capabilities.
That has seemed to work so far ...

My somewhat limited experience has led me to the conclusion that Mozilla is
the most friendly browser for handling reference importing. Internet
explorer and Safari do not work correctly. Safari will not open a .cgi file
with endnote with or without the popup blocker enabled.
Internet explorer gets confused in the helper file settings. The technical
support folks at ISI walked me through the correct settings, but it didn't
work. I made the library search engine the home page in my mozilla browser
and that is the browser's only function. All other internet interaction
occurs with safari. It may be that the library search engine we subscribe
to is at fault to some degree, but the Mozilla browser gave the
functionality required.
To set up the mozilla browser, go to Preferences form under the Mozilla
menu. Select the Navigator category and then the Helper Application
category. When you download the file, it associates that downloaded file
type with whatever is defined in the file type window. To redefine an
action, either remove it and then use the browser to download or change it.
If removed, it will ask what to do if it does not know and it will store the
response in this window. For example: A recent upgrade from EN6 to EN7.
When downloading new references, EN6 would handle the download. The
"application/x-research-info-systems" entry in the file types window was
associated with EN6. I deleted that file type, switched to the browser
window, downloaded a new reference and when the option came up asking which
application should handle this file, I selected EN7 and it now works each
time. EN requires a library file selection each time a file is downloaded
and imported. Even if EN is open and the library the references are to be
listed in is open, a file still must still be selected at the import form.
Similar steps in internet explorer (which has many helper entries) and
safari have been completed, to no avail. I wish you the best of luck using
those browsers and if you get them to work please share, but for now I would
recommend Mozilla. It just works.

maybe you can try the preference moreinternet (freeware) which allows
you to define all helper application independent on the used browser:
