I think the best thing to do is to remove the space after the "issue" and add an "link adjacent" between the | and (Year) in the footnote journal article template.  Save as a new name, and then use that newly named output style to format your document.  You can also just insert a regular space there, as it would be highly unusual to not have the year field filled in this ref type, and the link adjacent is to help ensure extraneous spaces and empty parentheses are not included in the output when the field itself is empty (anything surrounded by the | "forced separation" characters).  I am not sure why or if you need both the link adjacent and the forced separation characters, but that is the safest route in my experience.    For me, in the July version of the CMS15A, this would like like this: Author, "Title," `review of` Reviewed Item, Journal Volume|, no. Issue| (Year)|: Cited Pages|   (I deleted the trailing full stop as well, and the widely spaced "spaces" are all link adjacent, which in endnote looks like a little centered circle, although people with better eyes tell me it is a diamond shape!)    I attach an image as well.  Which includes a view of the drop-down "insert field" from which you select this "space"

Number 5 from the Top Ten things to Remember about Endnote (in Help)   If you are using footnote styles, your word processor controls the numbering and placement of the footnote and EndNote controls the formatting.  So you will first need to insert the footnote using your word processor, then insert the EndNote citation into that footnote.   (I actually just found these earlier today!)   this will also fix your other problem, as the footnote style is defined to give Firstname Surname in the footnote output.

Is there a reason why you can't key-in the references direct in EndNote? Typing them into Excel first seems to be adding an extra layer of complication.   One possible reason for the failure is that your import filter is using smart record identification and there's been some change in the rules for this between X3 and X4. It might be worth seeing if it helps to change to the method to something that's under your control, such as "blank line separates records"

Look carefully at the Ref Type table for the reference types you have been importing.  They changed some, particularly utilized some Custom Field types that hadn't been used in earlier versions.  Maybe they affected your particular ref type field names?

The power of Endnote, is that you can edit the style to update/repair/fix what ever small variants you might come across.  They have some huge number of output styles and each has a huge number of ref types.  Attached is a version I added the word "Retrieved" to that ref type bibliography template. One of the other APAs might have been right, but I find it far easier to just edit it to what is needed.

Hey, thank you for that advice!  I have changed my style so that it fits my needs.   However, i have one more part i'm struggeling with. Take my code:   Author.| (Year).| Title.| Retrieved|, Access Date,|, Access Year,| from URL   This will make my web page bibliography look fine. The only this that botheres me, is that the "Retrieved" will be shown when i do not input "Access Date", "Access Year" and "URL". Is there any solution to this?   (Note: it is not of importance for this particular case since web pages usually come with an URL, but just for general knowledge)

Author.| (Year).| Title.| Retrieved|, Access Date,|, Access Year,| from URL   So the |  character isolates the information.  If the field is empty, included between two of these, the text will not be displayed.  So take away the | and link it to the following Retrieved and if you always have an Access Date, it will show up when that field has info in it, otherwise it will be omitted.  You might need to replace the space with a "link adjacent" character (insertable from the insert field dropdown links text to a field). If  you want it to show Retrieved from when there is a URL independent of whether you have the date info?  Then you might want to consider upgrading to X5 which includes the conditional formating feature, but I haven't played with it extensively to see what is possible and I am on a X4 machine right now, so can't test the options at home.

Hey,    thanks for the try, but, unfortunately, this doesn't work perfectly either.  As you can see from your code, if you got no Access Date, the "Retrieved" will not show up.  So in the case you only got the "year" you get:   author. (year). title. 2011, from URL.   I can find no conditional formatting features in X5. There are just the same seperators as in X4. Might those only be for the Windows version?    Anyway, this formatting i got now will do for my bachelor thesis. The other references seem to be working according to APA 6th.   Thanks for the patient help!

I am having similar issues with cite while you write. I am not sure how picky the insertion of citations is in the library because when I choose to cite something from the Library, sometimes it does it correctly, sometimes in adds the first initial before the last name, sometimes it does the full name, etc. The weird part is it does it all correctly on the reference page but no within text.   Is it a Library formatting problem or do I need to change preferences somehow?   Thank you for whatever help you can give!

Assuming this is only happening for some and not all the citations, the "picky" part is how they are entered into your library.  If the names are not exactly the same in the two records, Endnote assumes they are two different authors with similar hames and tries to distinguish them.  This is a setting that should be honored in most styles, but it can be turned off.  The more correct fix is to copy and paste the author info replacing it in each of the other records.

Additionally, the default author list format in EndNote X5 is wrong.  Specifically, EndNoteX5 defaults to including a comma between all authors in the creation of a bibliography.  When there are only two authors the amperstand and comma are not inlcuded, for example:   Last_Name, F. and Last_Name, F. (year). Title. etc...   NOT   Last_Name, F., & Last_Name, F.   OR   Last_Name, F., and Last_Name, F.   I can fully appreciate the difficulty programming citation and referencing systems compliant with APA 6th, but this is absolutely ridiculous and inexcusable if you are charging your customers for your software.

Unless something has changed, I would not use a library in the drop-box, and only put a compressed version there and move it to the hard-dirve before openning and using.

There may be issue related to whether both parties are working across platforms and if they are using different versions of EndNote. Are both using Windows (what versions), or is one using Windows and the other using a Mac?  Also what version of EndNote is each person running?   If both parties are working across platforms, here's some info from the EndNote Knowledge Base for transferring files:   EndNote: Transferring Windows EndNote libraries to a Macintosh (and vice-versa) EndNote Libraries that are created on the Mac version of EndNote 8 or later or the PC version of EndNote 8 or later are compatible across platforms; they can even be shared over a mixed-platform network. With the database structure of EndNote 8, your libraries will not be backwardly compatible with older versions of EndNote. Version 8 and later databases are compatible with the EndNote 8 and later programs only. For more information on the EndNote 8 and later Library format, go here.   To share a library, use the following steps. If all users are using EndNote X and later: You can save your complete library (the EndNote library.enl file as well as its associated .DATA folder and all of its contents) to a single compressed .enlx file in order to easily transfer your library. Note: This compressed library may only be opened with EndNote X or later. Open the library in EndNote. Endnote X/X1: From the "File" menu, select "Send to" and then "Compressed Library." Endnote X2 and later: From the "File" menu, select "Compressed library (.enlx)" and then "Create..." Use the file dialog to save to an EndNote Compressed Library (filename.enlx). To restore a compressed library file: Use EndNote X or later to open the filename.enlx file, which will extract the .ENL file and the .DATA folder to the same folder where the .ENLX file is located. Use EndNote to open the filename.enl file as you normally would to use the library. If all users are using EndNote 8 and later: If you plan to email an EndNote 8 or later library to someone, you must send all of the files found in your library’s DATA folder. While you cannot attach an entire folder to an email, you can use a third party program (such as WinZip or StuffIt, or Windows Compressed folders) that can zip your library and DATA folder into a single file to send via email. Windows to Macintosh for EndNote 7 and earlier:   If you are on a network you can simply copy the library from the PC to the Macintosh. If the machines are not networked you can transfer the files via portable media (CD, floppy, zip disk, USB key drive, etc.) or you can email the file(s) to yourself. In the EndNote program on the Macintosh, choose Open from the File menu and select Open Library. As long as the library has the .enl extension, EndNote will display it. Macintosh to Windows for EndNote 7 and earlier: Any library created by the Mac version of EndNote (prior to version 8) can be used by EndNote for Windows. Version 8 and later databases are compatible with the EndNote 8 and later programs only. No conversion is necessary, however you should change the name of the library to include the .enl extension (for example, Medicine.enl).   If you are on a network you can simply copy the library from the Mac to the PC. If the machines are not networked you can transfer the files via portable media (CD, floppy, zip disk, USB key drive, etc.) or you can email the file(s) to yourself. Start the EndNote program in Windows. (If you see a dialog prompting you for a reference library file, choose Cancel.) Select Open from the File menu, and choose Open Library. Under "Look in" navigate to the location of the library you want to open. If your library does not have the extension .enl or .lib it will not appear in the dialog. If that is the case, select All Files *.* from the file type list at the bottom of the dialog and you should be able to see your library.

FWIW, I also see this if a file name for an attachment is too long, endnote fails to extract the file and opens an empty library.  In Windows you're only allowed 256 total characters (including the "\Folder1\folder2" part. One option is to shorten the name of the library (since Endnote puts everything in a "Libraryname.data" folder) and try opening your file in a higher directory (so instead of \Documents\directoryname try just in \Documents.)   Alternatively have your collaborator send you a compressed library without attachments.

Thanks for that reply. Both user are using the same version of Windows (XP) and Endnote (X4) but when the library is sent as an enlx it is empty when opened at the receiving computer.  The length of the file name for the attachments could be a problem so I will investigate that further.   Regards, Claude.

If you want to use a specific library catalogue which isn't included in the search connections that come bundled with EndNote, the best thing to do is to go to that library's website and see whether they offer a downloadable connection file that you can add to EndNote. If you search their website for "EndNote" you may also find some general help on using EndNote with their collections.   To get a feel for the way EndNote's search works, you might find it helpful to play around with searching one of the libraries that are already included in online search even though the references themselves aren't going to be relevant to you.   EndNote doesn't include an "internal" web browser like some other reference programs, because it uses a special protocol (z39.50) which was specifically designed for programs searching catalogues of references.

Sorry you are having problems.  As CG suggests go to http://www.endnote.com/training/ and look at the EN supplied training materials.  try the first link to view, or to download the training.  skip the first one, in fact - go to the third topic.    I much prefer the Online rather than integrated search (illustrated in the training above), as you can select the reference you want in your library.  In integrated, everything (except duplicates IF you change the default preferences to omit the duplicate download).    Once you have done those, consider participating in a webinar.

hello   These re the videos that are garbled and  keep stopping and they still dont show me how to do an independent search in libraries not in the list.. I now know how to use Google scholar. Ths is ok becaus I am not doing research just redoing my manual references but I still need to get into my state library and all other relevant university libraries. I dont know how to do this as online search just takes me to the reference fields bottom of the page.I tried several books nd none showed up in this search so this is no good. I want to be able to use the browser to get to the library and then add to notebook. I could do his in Zoltero. However ere is no paid support in Zoltero and my student who added my references into word that I lost knows how to use endnote. I dont want to pay such a lot of money and find it doesnt do all I want it to do.   Most of the university already have the libraries inbuilt so no need to go anywhere else to look. I found when she did my refernces she used her account at the uni to look them up but had trouble with references that were not in her library. thanks anyway

I spoke to my library but onone knew what I was talking about. No use using American reference libraries for material that relates to my state and to australia as they are not there. I would find it easy if I could use one of these databases but even the australian libraries doesnt have books I need. I can use my state library to add to my library list in Zoltero. It is very easy. Bu this is not the programme I want to use because no paid support support.   Someone suggested i go to a seminar but there are none in mys state. If I cant go to the brower to search and then add to endnote it is useless to me it seems.   Thanks for your time

I did manage to get in and stay connected.   <going to LA on the web (not through EndNote) to use their direct export option (assuming LA offers this) to search then download references from LA into EndNote.>   As I said but cant see where it appears endnote is not going to work for me. I cant see why I cant do a browser search and go to one of the university libraries as all the ones in Perth offfer it to their students but as I say their version is inbuilt with their library. I rang one of the universities but they couldnt help for this reason and someone said to use Zoltero. I tried this and it is good but no paid support. Sorry if duplicating responses.   It seems clear from the answers that I cannot do an external search and put the reference into endnote unless my version is licenced to a university that uses this. Would this be a correct assumption??   Sorry to be a pain but if this is the case this seems a really big problem for such and expensive programme.

Would this be a correct assumption?? . Per my response to your other posting on the "EndNote How To" forum it might be helpful to identify the libraries you want to access; and/or search for the corresponding EndNote connection file then test the file. It's possible, however, that those university libraries have restricted access, enabling only university community members to search the online databases. If so, you may have to rely on open/public access resources instead.   You'll need to research which libraries within your area are accessible to you and your particular research needs. EndNote forum users may be able to help search for connection files and import filters but need more information to focus search efforts within their own time and work constraints.   _________________________________ Also note that Zotero needs to be configured first for Direct Exporting references into EndNote:   EndNote: Configuring Zotero to allow the direct export to function   The Zotero plug-in for Mozilla Firefox can be configured to allow the direct export to EndNote, EndNote Web, Reference Manager or ProCite. To open Zotero click on the Z or Zotero in the lower right corner of the Firefox window. If Z or Zotero are not showing in the corner of the window click on Tools and click on Zotero. In the Zotero window near the left end of the upper boarder above My Library is a round icon that looks like a gear and with a downward triangle to the right. When the mouse pointer hovers over the icon the popup should say "Actions." Click on Actions and then click on Preferences. On the General tab go to the section called Miscellaneous. In the Miscellaneous section uncheck the box that says "Use Zotero for downloaded RIS/Refer files." On a Windows computer click on OK, on a Macintosh close the Preferences window. After that close Firefox and restart the browser. Zotero will no longer capture the exported files.

Hello   Thank you for your response. I have already added lots of references from my libraries into Zotero so I know that it can be done very easily. That is why I can’t understand why an expensive programme can’t do the same thing. .So are you saying that i have to use Zotero and endnote??? or are you just saying that I can transfer them into endnote if I decide to get it. I cant see any sense in this. I really want endnote because the student I have hired uses this and it seems easier if I can actually get my libraries into endnote. I have done all my research so only using it for citations and bibliography. Cite while you write seems good and I want to be able to use this.. In case you mised the frst post I lost all my citations when my hard drive crashed. They wern't backed up, although I did have an external modem.    I want to use endnote if it is suitable for my needs, not Zotero for reasons I have stated. Also the back up seems easier and more to what I am used to in my genealogy package which is safe. However, I have been told people doing research use both programmes.   I checked out the link you gave me, but they are in no specific order and I haven’t been able to find any of the universities I use.  I have been looking since your post. A search option for the name of the library would be useful.   I am looking to connect to” State library of Western Australia” http://www.slwa.wa.gov.au/   and University of Western Australia  http://www.uwa.edu.au/   Your post <To locate and download connection files (to connect fo libraries - but note some libraries may have restricted access: http://www.endnote.com/support/enconnections.asp To locate and download Import filters (to convert .txt or RIS files so they may be imported into EndNote: http://www.endnote.com/support/enfilters.asp>   On the latter point regarding importing filters this is beyond my level of expertise and I can’t understand it, sorry. Many thanks for your time. I need to go now but will pick this up again tomorrow.. kind regards

I wish I could just sit down with you and work thru the issues and problem you are having.  If you find Zotero to your liking, I understand that the support community is really quite good and responsive.  What you are getting here on this Endnote forum is also "unpaid" support!  We are just experienced users.  Also, if you still want to use Endnote, and can currently download to Zotero, but not endnote, yes you can use the resources together.  But if Zotero is installed, it may also have bypassed downloads to Endnote, and directed them to Zotero.  This is not uncommon, which may explain some of your difficulties.    Perhaps the internet connection is interferring with the video downloads which originate here in the states.  Have you called local Endnote support in Australia? Also, this page lists webinars on the Australian vendors site.   http://www.crandon.com.au/EndNote/webinars/webinars.html   I also went to the U of Western Australia and found this training page: http://libguides.is.uwa.edu.au/content.php?pid=39446&sid=289558 but found no endnote resources on the SLWA site.  (the search I did at UWA is this http://search.uwa.edu.au/search.html?site=search&hl=en&query=search&words=endnote and there are multiple pages of results.    Please note there are two different programs Endnote and Endnote Web - and they do things in different ways, so make sure you are looking at the appropriate training. As I believe I mentioned somewhere, Endnote Web is not usually a part of the trial.   Zotera is more like endnote web I think, but I could be wrong about that.  It has been a long time since I looked at it.  (but is is free!)

Both files are attached for your convenience.   Download the files to your computer then copy both files to the "Connections" folder in your EndNote Program directory. The folder's location would be something like: C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote X5\Connections.   Once the connection files are installed you can launch the EndNote program then select the connection file you want to use then activate the connection.   As for your comments/questions re: Zotero, see Leanne's response.

Hi  Guysl   After all this my student says she uses endnote web and does her citations manually in word  using the online account!!! Online account sounds a safer option. Also the Australian help desk gave me a new link for the library and a pdf instructions on how to install it. So now I have to decide.   One last request. Leanne was warning me to be careful not to download tutorials for endnote web because they are quite different. Which way should I go bearing in mind my needs and the fact that the student uses endnote web and can give me training. Plus if it is quicker for her I dont hae to pay her as much over time? I would also want the plug in for cite as you write.   kind regards

Yes, well now you do want the Endnote Web tutorial!  but you will need to review them to decide if you want to install the program, as it is not a part of the trial anyway.  But it is a part of the program.    good luck.  (I can't provide advice on the web version, as I have not used it at all.)

Hi Leanne   What was confusing is that they had a special download for endnote web at $100 less and I have now been told it is part of endote. I have found some tutorials and it seems easier for me. (They are all working fine) You just connect to the web when you are inside of endnote. I will purchase it through my Australian site and they have technical support for two years. The distributor has helped me find my state library. It is a round about way of doing things but nevertheless once I am in I can whip up my references now I know how.   It will still be a steep llearning curve but I am happier using the web version I think. But either way I am going to purchase it today.   Once again thanks for your help

To generate footnotes you need to insert the footnote with the word processor and then insert the citation in the footnote.  Is that what you are doing?

I suspect that your Journal Terms library has this entered incorrectly, and that it is replacing the title during the Journal abbreviations set up.  To fix it, you can edit the Journal terms list, or delete that item from the Journal Terms list if it is correctly defined in the record itself.  Check this thread and perhaps some other threads that come up with "Journal Terms List".    To prevent that kind of error from creeping in again,   In EndNote, click on Edit>Preferences>Term Lists.   Uncheck the boxes Update lists when importing... and Update lists during data entry.   because it usually comes from the way things are entered in different databases.

What output style are you using currently?  Can you attach it to a reply?  (if it is an "installed style" on a PC it will be in the the styles folder in the endnote folder in the program folder on your C: drive.  - if you already edited it or downloaded it it will the in and endnote/styles folder in your documents folder.

OK let's see if this helps. Here is the output style. Also when I transferred my bibliography from Citation 9, I got about 20 entries with no author. I openned one up ande the author is under LABEL. Even though the citation type is set for BOOK, it doesn't give me an option for entering an AUTHOR.

No Author in the Book Ref type?  Even when you show empty fields?  That makes no sense.  The field must be there, just not showing because the field is empty?  (but you say something further back that you are viewing unfilled fields).  Have you modified the reference types at all?  (Edit preferences, reference types, modifiy).    In the records that have imported the author into the Label field:  So somehow in the importing step, the field was not tagged correctly so Endnote could parse it to the right field.  -- You do  have the ability to move contents of one field to another  in endnote  (under the tools dropdown) so select just those refs without authors, and hide the rest (under references drop down) and then perform the move function from Label to Author.  (Are they a specific kind of  book? --   Endnote has really three kind of book ref types, Book, edited book and book chapters, and I said in another thread, you could add more, if there were a need.)   Let me look more carefully at your style and get back to you on if it needs tweaking. It may be missing some of those "link adjacent" characters resulting in text associated with empty fields.

Yes those fields openned up when I unclicked SHOW/HIDE UNUSED FIELDS. Thanks. I am using the Journal of Biblical Literature style download from your lists. When I put the cursor on it, it says Bibliographical Style. How do I access the footnote style, which is different (and more often used)?

Not my lists.  I am a user too!  --   To use a footnote style, you need to insert the footnote from Word and then insert the citation into the footnote created. The style has a set of templates specific to footnotes,   The style you attached earlier does have a number of spaces that need to be converted to "link adjacent" symbols in both the bibliography and footnote section.  I have started that, but you might want to request an updated output style from the endnote style people, cause it is hard to see them and make them all correct without better eyes than mine, also, I don't have the exact style parameters at my fingertips.  Plus they will want the corrected output style on their website, in anycase.

There is more information required to help you I guess, as I am confused.   By your last statement ("Short of creating a new reference type...)  I assume  that you have NOT created (via edit>preferences>reference type>modify) a new reference type "interview" from one of the unused ref types?   but have edited the output style (Chicago 16th A) to add a reference type in the bibliograpy template and specified the fields that you want to show in the order and with the punctuation you require?    But that isn't possible, so I must have misunderstood.  So you need to modify an unused ref type as above, and then create the corresponding template in the output style, unless you are lucky enought that "generic's" template corresponds to exactly what you wnat.  - which is rarely the case.    How are you entering your records and as what reference type?

Try reverse the entry so the surname appears first followed by 2 commas then the first name. So for example if "Desborough" is the surname the Author field's format would be:   Desborough,, Vincent Robin d'Abra

There's an FAQ (Article #81036) and video in the EndNote Knowledge Base on the topic. Click the link to go to the FAQ and scroll down the list to "CWYW12":  http://endnote.com/support/faqs/endnote. The text portion of the FAQ states:   EndNote: Viewing code like { ADDIN EN.CITE..instead of the citations   What you are seeing is the hidden field codes in Word, which is the hidden code EndNote uses to hold the reference information for your formatted citations. To fix the problem: Quick Fix: Hit ALT+F9 (Option+F9 on Mac) on your keyboard to toggle field codes. If you are still seeing the codes, proceed with the longer steps below. On Windows:   Word 2000/2002(XP)/2003: In Word, go to the "Tools" menu, and select "Options." Here, on the "View" tab, uncheck the box named "Field Codes". Click "OK". The document should now appear normal. Word 2007/2010: Word 2007: go to the Office icon in the upper left, and click "Word Options" at the bottom of this window. Word 2010: go to the "File" option in Word 2010, and click "Options" at the bottom of this window. Click on the Advanced option on the left hand side and scroll down to the section titled "Show Document Content." Uncheck the item titled "Show field codes instead of their values" and click OK. The document should now appear normal. On a Macintosh: In Word, go to the "Word" menu, and select "Preferences".   Here, on the "View" menu, uncheck the box named "Field Codes".   Click "OK".   The document should now appear normal. This setting is a universal setting for Word, so making this change should fix any documents that are currently displaying the field codes.

We got around this problem by doing the following. When editing the APA 6th output style to remove the comma do not save the change as a copy. You need to save it as APA 6th so that it overwrites the original. We found that for this particular problem when inserting the citation using a copy version of APA 6th it always reverted to the incorrect settings in the original APA 6th, ignoring the changes in the APA 6th copy.

Try this (attached). The "Adv in Space Res" was modified by changing the "Author Separators" setting from commas to semicolons (see attached image).   Download the output style to the computer desktop then double-click to open the file and launch EndNote.

That is because you need to change the manuscript to utilize the "copy" version.  Changing it in the endnote program is not enough.  That is so, if you are working on multiple documents with different style requirements you don't have to keep changing the style in the program.  -- it is also a bit dangerous to not use the "copy" or alter the name of the file, especially if it is one of the "installed" styles.  you can't be sure if you are using the altered one (saved in the user's documents/endnote/styles folder) or the original one (stored in the program folder/endnote/styles folder) unless you manually replace the installed version with the modified version using windows.  Since Vista, Windows will not allow programs to modify the contents of the program folder contents.  Endnote pulls styles from both locations and I have found that it is sometimes "hit or miss" which one is used when the two locations have files of exactly the same name.

Greetings,   As a test, I would like you to create a new file attachment link in any EndNote library on your machine.  It doesn't matter which PDF file you link, or which record you create the link within.  Immediately after creating a new file attachment link, try double-clicking on the file attachment icon to see if this new link fails to launch as well.    If you find that this new attachment fails to launch, try installing the following PDF viewer-   http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/   *  Look for the 'Foxit Reader' download link *   Once you've installed Foxit Reader, test several file attachment links within EndNote to see if they are now launching properly.  Please let me know what you find.      Best Regards, Jimmy M. Already trieed. Doesn't work.   It works with Foxit. I  have to use Adobe for my uni though.   It would seem Endnote it not calling Adobe Reader properly. I can navigate to the pdf and open it fine.

This issue is related to how Adobe is creating filetype associations.  If using Foxit Reader is not an option, here is an Adobe workaround discovered by one of my colleagues:   _________________________________________________ This is an issue that can happen with the different Adobe PDF viewing programs.  When you tell EndNote to open a PDF, EndNote tells Windows to open the PDF.  Something about the way the Adobe programs register with Windows how to open the PDF will cause the error.   Currently the only resolution we have besides using a different PDF viewing program, is to create a Windows Batch file to open PDFs using the PDF software of your choice.  While this may seem redundant, it seems to be the only way to have the PDFs open consistently with the Adobe programs.    1) Open My Computer and go to the folder where you PDF viewing software was installed.  The goal here to find the exact path and name of the PDF viewing program.  These are the default installation locations for Acrobat Reader 7 and 8: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe   2) Go to "Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad".  You would need a line like the following:   start "" "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" %1 You would need to replace the "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" with the path to the PDF viewing program you want to use.  Note that this must be in quotes, there is an empty set of quotes between start and the path, and that the line ends with %1   3) Go to "File > Save As" and set the "Save as type" to "All files".  Browse to your My Documents folder and save the file the name "PDF_Wrapper.bat"     4) Open a My Computer Window and go to "Tools > Folder Options".  Click on "File Types" and select the "PDF" extension.   5) Click on the "Change" button and then click on "Browse".  Browse to your My Documents folder, select the file "PDF_Wrapper.bat" click Open and then click OK.  Click Close to close the window.     Browse to a PDF on your computer and double click it to verify that you can still open a PDF.  Then open EndNote and try opening a PDF.  Note that your PDF viewing software may inform you that it is not the default viewer, you would not want to have it be the default viewer.  This may also change the icon that was used for your PDF files. _________________________________________________     Please let me know if this helps.   Best Regards, Jimmy M. First the good news.  Word always looks in Text boxes first, and you can possibly  resolve this by converting the holders for your figures into frames. This has the added advantage that you can use the Figure titles as captions and autocreate the table of figures in word (that too doesn't work in boxes).  the new FAQ location discussing this is hard now to link to in thier new web interface.  http://endnote.com/support/faqs/endnote - it is FAQ 21 under the "Working with Word Processors/CWYW" heading.  (note that Word2010 really doesn't make this easy and I find the lack of ability to build a table of figures more of a problem than where Endnote starts numbering them!!)   Bad news:  Unless something has changed recently, a non-breaking space is difficult to insert in Endnote.  (while the help files refer to a "non-breaking space" in the context of linking fields to adjacent text which should be excluded if the field is empty, this is obviously not what you are looking for).  I suggest that you use a character instead of the space which will look ugly, and then you can replace ,^ for example with ",non-breaking space" in word before submission if it is something you really need.  Alternatively don't leave any space following the comma, and that usually looks pretty good too.

Thanks a lot. I don't see the point, why word does check Text boxes first, but anyways, converting into frames works!   Regarding my second problem: I already did erase any space between the citation, but actually I don't really like it that way ;) But I guess it is a really good idea to do it the way you suggested with replacing a character. I am going to try it in the end with a character I didn't use.   So again, many thanks.

You might contact tech support (http://endnote.com/support/contact-support) but before doing so did you try downloading a new/fresh output "footnote" style that's similar to your footnote style (e.g., Chicago 16A or construct a new modfied output style from a clean style file with minimum adjustments) just to test whether the ibid function works while running X6?  If the new/fresh style works in X6 it might suggest a problem with your modified output style file.

I'm getting the same problem.  I just upgraded from EndNote X5 to X6 and wanted to transfer a new desktop library to my EndNote web.  It was a disaster.  The transfer function on the previous version (X5) was working very well, allowing the user to take control of what needed to be transferred/synchronized.  I had several libraries (one per writing project) that I could transfer to/from EndNote web pretty easily.  Now the new version (X6) created a huge, duplicated, single library, without respecting my groups in either place (desktop or web).  Luckily I had a back up but this should not be like this.  I switched back to X5 until this gets fixed on the new version...

Don't think it's an issue with X4; possibly Mac-related but hard to say without further info. Did you try clicking the "Update Citations and Bibliography" option from the EndNote tab in the MS Word ribbon?   If that doesn't work you might test whether unformatting the citations from backup copies of 2 chapters; merge the documents; then update the citations and bibliography to see if that works. If it does, then it might indicate unformatting the citations might be needed before merging and updating the citations/bibliography.

I always advise people to unformat citations before ANY cutting and pasting of text containing citations, so this includes for merging documents. If you have not been in the habit of unformatting citations then you will need to unformat then reformat (ie update citations) within each document just to test that all the citations are matched. There might be some work involved in re-matching citations if you have not done this before - but it is important you get through this step and re-match, that way you find out where the problems are. Then unformat again before merging chapters and it should all come together in a single bibliography when you update citations again.   Version X4.0.2 should be fine with Word for Mac 2011.

The CWYW settings must be disabled.  If you want them enabled, you just need to go to the "format bibliography" dialog and on the third tab, select the "enable" button.  -- but your supervisor probably disabled it, to make sure that the document didn't get corrupted.  I like to do this too, when working on my students documents, particularly large documents like Thesises!

You're seeing the EndNote field codes. To turn them "off", view the "CWYW 12" FAQ from the EndNote Knowledge Base (scroll down the list then click on CWYW 12) which provides instructions and a video.

Hi,   I have had this problem in the past as well.   Are you using an Endnote library that you have used with previous versions of Endnote?   I found that when i created a new library with EndNote X6 the sync process to obtain references from EndNotweb worked without any problems.  I then imported the references from my old library into the new one and put them in a new group and the sync process worked in the opposite direction as well.  It showed all references and groups correctly.   Hope this works for you

On Mac (Mountain Lion), ibid. doesn't work at all, with any style! I've tried with MS Word 2011, NeoOffice and Apple Pages. On Windows Vista the same style, copied by me from Mac, works very good. This is very frustrating. I've bought EN X6 for sync, but sync doesn't work with Romanian characters! No solution from the Support Team! If this problem of ibid persists, I want my money back.

Frustrating!   Until Technical Support provide a solution, you can use the suffix field as a workaround.   Convert existing unformatted references by changing "@" to "' p." (single quote, space, p, period). Then reverse the conversion when it is fixed. It would be safest to do this one at a time to avoid changing @ symbols that are part of the text and to allow fixing references to multiple pages (pp. instead of p.).

Here's an email I got from support on this issue - basically that's the way the program is, so deal with it. This is an unfortunate decision, since it basically makes the software unusable for academic purposes. I hope they fix the bug soon, until then, I'll be sticking with my old X4.   -----   Thank you for contacting Thomson Reuters Technical Support. Just to be sure, does this happen when you add cited pages to the repeated citations? If yes, with EndNote X6, adding cited pages to the repeated citations makes them to appear in full. We apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your effort to bring this to our notice and I have it reported to our product development team. Currently, it is not possible to change this behavior in EndNote X6. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. However, as a workaround, when editing citations, you can use the Suffix field to insert the page numbers instead of the Pages field. This will make sure the repeated citations are replaced by Ibid. I hope this information helps a bit. Let me know if you have any further questions. I will go ahead and close this case for now; however, if you have any questions it can be easily reopened at any time by a reply. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience and understanding while we continue our research into this issue.

That is the exact reply I just received from technical support.    So apparently they are working on it, but there is no estimate about when it will be finished.    The problem with using the suffix is that for some reason, X6 does not seem to show the suffix unless it is 3 characters long or more. If I just put in a single page number like "4" it doesn't show up. If I put in "4." the only thing that shows is the period. To get the page number to show up, I have to enter " 4." with the space.    Of course, when I do this, the end of the Turabian citation already has a period, so I have to go change the footnote styles so that they end in a comma. But there are times when I am just referencing a book, rather than a specific page number in a book, and I want these to end in a period instead of a comma.    Ultimately, it is all very frustrating.    I am a brand new customer of Endnote and do not have X5 to revert to, otherwise I would.

Apparently it is not important to them that Chicago/Turabian users be able to use their product.

Hi all,   I wanted to follow-up on the Suffix field workaround that has been suggested while this issue is outstanding.  When inputting page information within the Suffix field, you must not start the field with a number.  While adding cited page information into the Suffix field, you will want to include a leading character in front of whatever page information you'd like to include.  For instance, including a comma or a space in front of your cited page(s) information within the Suffix field would allow this information to appear correctly.  Here's an example of what I'm referring to:   1.  After inserting a repeated footnote reference, highlight "Ibid." and click "Tools>EndNote X6>Edit & Manage Citation(s)...".   2.  When the Edit & Manage Citation(s) window appears, click your cursor within the Suffix field to input your cited page information.  For instance, if you wanted to include page number 45, within the Suffix field you would start by inputting a space and then '45'.   3.  Click OK on the Edit & Manage Citations window to view the updated Ibid footnote reference within your document..     Please let me know if my clarification allows you to include cited page information for Ibid references.  I do apologize for any inconvenience caused by this issue.   Best Regards, Jimmy M. Since Office developers have an irritating habit of changing the way it handles field information, it really is dangerous to jump back and forth between old and newer versions of Word with Endnote formatted  documents.  I usually find that I can open an older document in new software, but going backward to an older version of Word can cause problems.  I always unformat to the curly bracketed form ({Author, Year #RecNo -- which aren't field codes) when I know that I am going to have to jump versions, whether to a Mac or an older version of Word.    Turning on or enabling the document to auto format the curly bracketed to formatted refs, is thru the format Bibliography dialog (in the Word Endnote toolbar, third tab). In most versions of Endnote, if you do "unformat" the citations to the curly bracketed form, it turns it off and stays off until you turn it on again.  Otherwise, unformatting them wouldn't "stick".   Field codes are long and give you some idea of why corruption can so easily happen.  To see Field codes - type Alt+F9.    If that is what you are seeing, then Alt+F9 will go back to the formated citations.

An update to EndNote X6 for Windows is now available to address this issue. For users with an individual license, the update can be applied by choosing the Help option from EndNote and selecting "EndNote Program Updates".   We are currently finishing up an update for EndNote X6 for Macintosh to address this problem and it will be available within the next couple of weeks.

Well,    I'm glad the update is out, but now my Endnote X6 will not Sync. I contacted Tech Support today, and they couldn't figure out why either....   Is anybody else having Syncing problems?    Basically, when I click "Sync" it sends me to the registration screen. I fill it out, and when I submit the information, it says it cannot register me, and I should contact Technical Support.    Any ideas?

Have you tried restarting your computer? Sometimes a system restart can allow the successful upgrading of an EndNote Web account.   When you open a web browser and go to www.myendnoteweb and log into your account, you will see in the upper left corner of the window where it will say EndNote Web Provided by or Powered by "something." If it says EndNote Web Powered by EndNote X6 your account has been successfully upgraded.   Are you doing this from your home computer or an institutional computer. What sort of internet connection do you have? Is it DSL or cable? Are you using Wi-Fi?

Are you exporting from EndNote into a tab-delimited text file?   If you have a duplicate record in your library it is possible that EndNote is not exporting it. To make sure that EndNote exports all of the records in the library are exported there is a preference you can temporarily turn off.   If you are using a Windows version of EndNote click on Edit > Preferences > Formatting and uncheck the box for "Merge duplicates in bibliography." If you on a Mac you can get to preferences by clicking on the EndNote menu next to the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen.

You have to change the output style in Word on the endnote ribbon, (or the format bibliography tool, in older versions of Word) not in the Endnote program.  If you are working with more than one document, the last thing you would want to have to do is switch styles in the program itself each time.  The output style selected "sticks" once set in each document.

  1. Did you happen to move the .enl library file and/or accompanying .DATA folder recently from your computer?   2. Are you working from one or multiple computers?   3. Did you try unformating the in-text citations and bibliograpy then updated the citations/bibliography? (Do this on a backup file copy and not the original file.)   4. If you answer "no" to items #1 and 2  and "yes" to item #3 your library file might be corrupted. Did you try recovering your library as described in Article 82291 from the EndNote Knowledge Base (below). (Suggest backing up the original .enl and .DATA folder just as a precaution.)     EndNote: The proper process for recovering library files   Standard Recovery:   With the library closed, in EndNote go to "Tools > Recover Library". Click OK to the notice that comes up, then select the library file you would like to recover (you may need to browse to the folder on your computer in which the library is located). After selecting your library, you will be prompted to save the new library that will be created. By default, EndNote will add "-Saved" to the end of the original name. After this, the recovery process will begin.   Once completed, EndNote will inform you of the number of references that were recovered into the Saved library. You can now use this Saved version of the library in place of the original, damaged library.     Advanced Recovery Options:   Instructions for rebuilding the library with just the .data folder. Creating a new .enl file.   There are some times where the normal library recovery won't work or won't be enough. Specifically if you are noticing that your EndNote library searches, Cite While You Write is not finding the right reference or sorting is not working properly. In these cases it may be necessary to recover the library with just the .data folder portion while creating a new .enl file. Additional information about the .Data folder can be found at the following article: Windows:   First, create a new folder on your desktop (Right click in empty space on the desktop and choose New/Folder). Locate the library in your machine through Windows Explorer. Copy the .data folder for your library into a new folder on your desktop by itself. In the folder you moved the .data folder into, create a new text file (Right click in empty space of the desktop and choose New/Text Document). Rename the text file, with the extension, to the name of the original .enl file.

Where is the manuscript saving to, and where is the library located?  Are one or both  on a network or dropbox or cloud location.    Is it a Windows machine or a Mac?  Which operating system, which versions of Word (you said your version of Endnote is X5).   Does it happen with a new document or an existing document.   In addition to unformatting and reformating as CG suggests, you may have to clean up the field codes in an existing document, especially if this has been recovered from a crash.

We were having similar problems and creating a new library helped as did going to X6.0.1   I've just discovered something new about Groups and I'm keen to know if anyone else can explain this. Here is what I did:  First of all I synced my libraries then: Create a group in desktop EN – call it ‘desktop’ for example Add three references to it Create a group in EN web – call it ‘web’ Add the same three references to it Press Sync The references that were in the desktop group are removed from the desktop group The web group appears in the desktop library under 'unfiled' with the three references intact If I then create a new group in desktop (with a different name) and the same three references are copied to that group Then the library is synced The group is transferred to web with the three references intact AND the references are intact in the desktop group   Questions: Does this mean that references that appear in more than one location will always be removed from desktop groups when the libraries are synced? Or was it the order that I created the groups (ie. the web one was created last)? Why did I get a different result when I then copied the same references from one desktop group to new desktop group (with a different name) then synced the libraries again? Is there a logic there? I'm at a loss as to how to explain this to our users..

I get the impression it has trouble dealing with a situation where the user has an existing EndNote Web library that's very different from the Desktop one.   I teach EndNote Web to students who will be using it as their primary reference manager (because it's free with our site license for Web of Knowledge) so my EndNote web library is fairly complicated and has a lot of groups and it's been created independently of my EndNote Desktop library.   When I tried the effect of syncing. I found that the EndNote Web groups were copied down (but had no contents) while my EndNote desktop references were copied up into my unfiled references.   If I copy references in Desktop into one of the empty groups downloaded from Web they're uploaded into that group.   I couldn't get it to sync to download the uploaded references into an empty library on another computer which I would have expected to be the main reason why somone would want to use sync.   My guess is that it's set up to be cautious about the way it handles libraries that are very different (which is probably a safety feature for most users).

Interesting: if I synced before creating a folder in web (with a different name but with the same references) the groups in both desktop and web remained intact after syncing. So my reading of this is that a sync should be done after each action to either desktop or web or is there something else going on that I've missed?   Thanks for your help,   Michelle

Yes up until now staff and students have been able to use web and desktop as independent entities and only sync  what they wished. This change to how sync works represents a risk for people who are used to working this way in the past.   We are thinking of putting up a warning for users of previous versions of the desktop version because it is so easy to lose references when syncing. We have also had some problems with people trying to sync to new/empty desktop libraries. The revised video goes through the steps but I really fear that users will not do this. I didn't find the steps very intuitive and I'm pretty sure I have more patience for this sort of thing than our students..   I agree with you about the cautious approach - it probably is related to that. I do wish there were more explicit warnings about group syncing though: on my first sync a whole bunch of references (luckily test ones) just disappeared from both desktop and web. A scary prospect for the serious researcher..

I guess part of the problem is that both Mendeley and Zotero do expect the user to create an empty library and sync when moving between computers rather than going through a complicated process to re-create the groups structure.

I suspected that the problem could have been that you'd been making changes to the same individual references, first on the web and then on the desktop, and when you chose to Sync afterwards only the more recent 'change' to an individual reference would take effect.

In general it is safe to make changes in the web and desktop and not sync. If the changes are to reference data and a sync didn't occur in time for us to know exactly what changes were intended, we will create a group called "Sync Conflicts" and allow you to see a side by side view of what changed locally vs on the web. However, if reference metadata(read/unread, ratings, trash state, and group membership) is what changed on both the local and web, then it automatically chooses what changed last.

For the sake of follow-up: In general, this worked. I had some problems with long file names, so instead of doing this on the desktop, I did it in the C: root, so that the path was as short as possible. This required administrator rights. Also, the process of "repairing" the new, empty .ENL file would cause EndNote to work for about 5 minutes, and then "not responding" according to Windows. I noticed the the .ENL file was then exactly as large (in KB) as the original, so I force-stopped EndNote, and then re-opened it with the new .ENL file. It then had to rebuild using the PDF index (Or something) and that took 10 or 15 minutes. Regardless, it now appears to work.

The Sync now works perfectly one way, but doesn't work the other way. My EndNote X6 library is backed up to EndNote Web and all syncs that way are happening automatically, however, I recently saved some new references to EndNote Web, but these have not been synced to my X6 library, even though the automatic syncs have been running. Is there any other setting I need to check?   I'm a Librarian trying to write our new training manual for January, so all help much appreciated! Many thanks.

the exact formating depends on the output style you are using.  some footnote styles generate a bibliography while others do not.  What style are you currently using for your output style?  for example Chicago 16th A has  both footnotes and a bibliography.

If EndNote is formatting the citations in the footnotes but not creating a bibliography, check the settings in your output style. First open one of your documents in Word and click on Tools > EndNote X5 > Bibliography Settings. You will see a window that shows the name of the style used in your document. Click on Cancel and go to the EndNote program. In EndNote click on Edit > Output Styles > Open Style Manager. When the list of styles comes up double click on the style you are using in your document. This will open the style in the Style Editor. Click on Templates under the Footnotes section. On the right side you will see a check box for “include citations in bibliography.” If that box is unchecked the citations in the footnotes will not be included in the bibliography. If the box is checked the next thing to do is to look at the very end of your document. If you have any tables, figures or special paragraph settings at the end of the document the bibliography will be suppressed.

All versions of EndNote going back to version X1 (released in 2007) can now import records from 2010 and later. EndNote X1 and X2 would need to be fully updated. EndNote X3 and later do not require any updates for this to work. EndNote versions 8, 9 and X can do so using the plug-in mentioned in this article:   http://help.thomson.com/default.asp?portalid=TSC&article=101523   These versions of EndNote can now import records whether they are from 2013 or 3013 and later. I hope this helps.   Jason Berman Technical Sup Rep RS Thomson Reuters   Phone: +1 800-336-4474 thomsonreuters.com

Hi Helen,   You may be seeing a feature of EndNote called Show Selected. When you import reference only the imported ones are visible in your library window, which allows you to check and edit them before moving on. Look at the both right of your EndNote screen, you will see a message in form: Showing 1 of 1 reference (All references: 100). To see all the references in your library, go to the References menu and select Show All or press Control and M key simultaneously.   Kind regards Patti

The "Export Word Citations" command is only going to work if you had inserted citations into the document using Microsoft Word's tools under the References tab to insert citations into the document. If you have typed the citations in manually, the export option will not work. The Edit & Manage Citations command only works for citations that have already been entered using the EndNote tools. If you manually entered the citations into the document, see the following article:   http://help.thomson.com/default.asp?portalid=TSC&article=82803   Jason Berman Technical Sup Rep RS Thomson Reuters   Phone: +1 800-336-4474 thomsonreuters.com

It can take a long time to unpack a compressed library and I can't remember if X4 shows you anything while it is unpacking and indexing the PDF attachments.  -- Did you try to compress it without the attachments and see if that worked?

A client had a similar error and reducing the filepath fixed it for her. Ask your friend to try moving the compressed library to My Documents or simply C drive before unpacking it to ensure the file path of attached pdfs does not exceed the 255 character limit (assuming you created the library when you had version X4).

I would actually avoid "my documents" as the place as it often has an invisible buried path associated with it, and I find that causes some similar problems.  - And note that the desktop is even worse, with an invisible path to the C:user/etc-etc folder which can get pretty deep.

Thanks for providing the .txt file of the problematic Record. Examining the .txt file in MS Word shows that while your filter's tags are a 3-character numeric digit the downloaded records from the Millennium catalog are actually a 7-character field. So although your filter has a "700" tag, in the .txt file the tag is actually "700 1 " (see image 1 - note that there are blank spaces included).  If you change the filter's tag to  "700 1 " the author's name will be imported into the EndNote "Author" field (see EndNote library in image 2) .Changing the filter's tag can be done by copying the length of the "Leader" field and paste it into the filter (see image 2).   You might also search the .txt file to see if there may be other variations of the "700 1 " tag  or other tags to add to the filter.  Also note that in your .txt file there are 7-digit variations of the following tags: 019, 082, 245, 650.  You may need to adjust your filter to use the corresponding 7-digit tag to import these fields unless you've designated them to be "ignored".   A copy of your filter with the modified 700 tag is attached for your reference.

Yes, there are various possibilities with the indicators (the "1 " in the example given by CrazyGecko above); see http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd700.html for full details - though first indicator "1" is by far the most common and first indicator "3" is very infrequent. Older catalogue records may have the obsolete second indicator "0" as well.   To cover most possibilities, I would suggest including the following tags in the filter "700 0 " "700 1 " "700 00" "700 10" "700 02" "700 12"   Similar indicators occur for 100 and 110 fields (personal and corporate main entry fields), which you can find out on the Library of Congress MARC pages http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/   Cheers John

Are you sure it isn't a match to something you already retrieved once, (even if I clear the current "set")?  I find that if it is in a current set, it won't find it again (unless I change to search currently retrieved set) and it looks like it doesn't work.

Hello, djs93:   That error indicates there's a "bad" character somewhere in one of the records it's trying to sync. This error usually occurs with an unpatched version of EndNote X6. Can you please go to Help>About EndNote and see if it says EndNote X6 (Bld...) or EndNote X6.0.1 (Bld....)?   If it says X6, you need to update. Please click again on Help and choose EndNote Program Updates to install or download the update.   If the update does not help, or if you are already running X6.0.1, please open a ticket with Technical Support here:   http://endnote.com/support/contact-support   I hope this helps! Have a great day.

Thank you. I am running X6.0.1 and the problem seemed to lie in the library file. I have moved the original library away, created & synced down a new one from my EN Web, now it works fine. (It's lucky that my library isn't too big to re-download)   The sync function might really be somewhat immature because there would actually be some strange things in daily use... Hope it will be better in further versions.

Are you using the correct output style file?  When the output style's settings are changed, these changes are saved to a new output style file having word "Copy" added (e.g., APA 6th Copy, Chicago 16th A Copy, etc.). So both EndNote and MS Word should be changed to use the new output style file in order to apply the changes.

Just need to ensure it is selected in the Word document, it doesn't matter what output style is selected in Endnote;   It just matters what output style is in Word, and changing the style in endnote has NO effect on the output style selected in the Word document.

depends on your version of word.  either in the format bibliograph option in the tools, or on the endnote ribbon in Word 2007/2010, there is a drop down "corner" on the bottom of the  bibliography settings.

I have Endnote X6 and this tip helped me "turn off" the Bibliography at the end of my document sections, but for some reason, one book keeps getting put into the bibliography.   Why would this be?    I have made sure the box which says ""Include citations in Bibliography" is Unchecked, but this one book keeps getting put back in.
