Subject: Re: COM Exception has occured: Command is not available Author: dvsmith2012 (New User) Date: 04-22-2011 01:15 AM Hi,   I'm getting the same error, but this happens every time I open NIH forms (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/416-9/phs416-9.htm; try "Form Page 1"). Unfortunately, this exception crashes Word every single time I open these documents. None of the above solutions apply here because this document does not -- and will not -- have any EndNote field codes. Any long-term solution would be great. I'm hoping there's just a conflicting EndNote file somewhere that can be deleted...   I'm using Word 2011 (with service pack 1) on a MacBook Pro (10.6.7).   Thanks, David

After deleting all comments, endnote works fine and I was able to changed the format of all references.

Subject: Re: COM Exception has occured: Command is not available Author: REM74 (New User) Date: 06-28-2011 03:28 PM Hello   I experienced the same problem with an NHMRC document;  after the document opened and I clicked on the error message, Word crashed.  I've got around it by opening Word first, then opening the document.  Alternatively, if a colleague has a different version of Word etc, you can ask them to open it and save the file as an rtf, as this also seemed to work.   I'm using Word 14.0.02, a MacBook Pro, and Mac OS X 10.6.7

Subject: Re: COM reference number error Author: Leanne (Mentor) Date: 07-25-2011 12:31 AM This is unlikely that this refer to an endnote record number.  It is not uncommon to have higher record numbers than the total number of refs in your library, as the record number is used only once and if a record is deleted (say a duplicate or something you decide you no longer need) that number is never reused in that library.  It is more likely to be due to some font specification, at least that is the most common association with that error message.  Fixes seem to suggest recreating a profile or removing the normal.dot or normal.dotm and allowing it to be recreated.  Was the document originally created in a different program or version of word/endnote.  Is it in an unfomated state?    You could try to show paragraph symbols and copy all to a clean document apart from that last paragraph symbol.  .

With EndNote X3 and earlier, the most common reason we have seen this error happen is because of "comments" in the document. While generally EndNote and Track Changes are compatible, for some reason X3 and earlier did not seem to work so well with Comments. If you do have comments, save a copy of this document with a new name, and remove all Comments. Are you then able to format?   I have also seen this error resolved by something as simple as rebooting the Mac, too, so do make sure you've restarted if you haven't done that since this error began, as well.   Write back if this still doesn't resolve this issue, as there are some other things to try.

So I have no way of applying any of the suggested solutions. And since the document that's causing the error is opened automatically next time MSWord tries to open (following the 'here's the document that you were working on when I crashed' facility) Word is unusable.   I have to trash the document and restart my machine to regain access to Word.   Reuters, please can you fix this wretched bug as soon as you can? I see from the dates on this correspondence that you've let it drag on for far too long.   MacBook Pro OS10.7.3 Endnote X2.0.1   Kind regards, Devi
