It is surprising and unfortunate that the data visualization program uses a
file called dataviz.exe when Dataviz is the maker of one of the best selling
palm programs of all time (Docs to Go). Given that Endnote's latest
versions are emphasizing palm functionality, this does not seem to recognize
potential confusion on this other platform.
As for the "rave reviews" - I am listed under "Endnote user stories" rather
than rave reviews. It may be telling that my version listed in the story
was 2.1. Since then I've done some upgrades and have continued teaching
people about bibliography management using Endnote. I'm probably
responsible for 40 or so student licenses having been purchased over the
last 10 years and a half dozen full price licenses. I used to be a great
advocate but have lost my enthusiasm for the reasons discussed better by
previous people. (In a nutshell, more frequent but costlier upgrades that
are less debugged.)
I still use a mix of Endnote 4, 5, and 6.
I'll be teaching my regular 1 hour workshop on Endnote in a couple of weeks
but I always preface it with more caveats than I had to in the 90s. I now
feel somewhat guilty if I steer people towards Endnote but it still beats
doing a dissertation without a bibliography management program of some kind.
Has anyone here tried the palm functionality in the new version? I'm
wondering if they made it any more robust. I believe the previous versions
were not great palm apps from earlier discussions. A couple of specific
items I would want would be:
1. Multiple libraries
2. Two way synchronization (add/delete/modify on handheld or desktop)
3. Be able to store libraries on memory cards
4. Fast operation (loading and searching)
If they really nailed all 4, it might be enough to get me back into version
9 but I'm concerned about opening a mess with respect to sharing libraries
with my students still on older database formats.
