Does anyone use Reference Web Poster to publish their EndNote libraries on
the Web? I have looked at ISI's information on the website, and was
interested in the 'real world' experience. Specifically, can anyone
comment on: the total size of the libraries they have searchable through
Web Poster; any server/software limitations; general functionality; using
the advanced search function; alternatives to the Web Poster software. URLs
pointing to examples of sites using Web Poster would also be useful.
Replies directly to me or to the group would be gratefully appreciated.

In response to the question about Reference Web Poster, my department bought
a copy. We have installed it and tested it but have not yet "gone live" for
all of our students and researchers. We have some questions or issues that
we have not yet resolved though:
1. We want to be able to limit the access to certain EndNote libraries. We
would we satisfied with having it set up such that if we arrive at EndNote
from one link, Libraries A, B, C,and D are accessible, if we access it from
another link, only libraries A and B are available. From our investigation,
this would require two separate copies of Web Poster on two separate
servers. (And two copies of libraries A and B!)
2. The system does not seem to make explicit mention of EndNote for
exporting references. It allows direct export to Reference Manager (7.x -
9.x) and Pro-Cite (3.x - 4.x) but not EndNote. RWP has been out for a while
and it seems like they could have added the option for EndNote but have not
updated the product recently. You can see this problem from their live
demo. http://www.isiresearchsoft.com/rwp/rwpdemo.html While it is
possible to download the file in a tagged format, you will then need to use
an import filter from EndNote. It looks like it is much easier to do with
with Reference Manager or Pro-Cite.
---
I really like the idea of Reference Web Poster as a way to leverage the
EndNote libraries my students and I have built but it seems like they need
to fix a few things up. The user interface is quite nice and professional
though.
Access to different databases (and/or password protection of certain
databases) is important though because many of the abstracts are copyrighted
and while making a library of references accessible to my students may still
fall under "fair-use", making it available to people outside my university
can't count and would be an infringement on the copyrights of the original
source databases. This is why I want my students to have access to
libraries A, B, C, and D but outside researchers to only have access to A
and B.

Sharon Kit asks for experiences with RWP.
We have been using it for a year and a half, mainly as a local resource to
support teaching. We use it on a Windows-based server (because we are told
it will not operate on a Mac or Unix server) and all seems OK both for
simple and advanced search. We re-load the EN file periodically from the
Mac on which it is maintained. Have a look.
http://omega.bart.ucl.ac.uk/ris/risweb.isa
The main limitation is that only 5 fields are visible (against the many
fields in the underlying EndNote file) and we therefore have to advise
users to search on "all fields" if they want to catch items by keyword,
words located in abstracts or in second author etc.

Since reference web poster is windoid only, I import endnote
references into FileMaker Pro and then deliver over the web. Probably
better anyway since I have the full functionality of a dedicated
database.

Dear Kim and copy to list
1. yes I do use it, and have for some years, to publish an EndNote
library of 3500 items for students and researchers. We run End Note
and everything on Mac, and all our other web activities under unix,
but have had to use a windows server for this particular application.
It does work, however.
2. It has + and - features. Worst thing is the limited number of
fields on which search can be performed. Graphic design rather ugly
too.
3. I'm away from the phone rest of this week.
You could phone me at home this weekend (daytime British Summer Time)

Our new website is now beginning to function on some topics (events,

I do the same thing as Jud. If Reference Web Poster were a Mac App I
would have gone with it rather than buying the more expensive Filemaker
Pro. Any chance this could happen? How about integration of RWP with
Endnote? Right now I keep all the info in two separate databases which a
pain!

I am planning to deliver a FileMaker database on the web, and to buy
Reference Web Poster for a bibliography. I am stuck with using a
Windows box to do that if they will both be on the same server. Using
FileMaker for both seems preferable, plus I can easily switch between
Windows and Mac. Down side is the purposeful crippling of FileMaker
v5 that limits the number of users per day.
I will be appreciative if you send me the URL of your FileMaker
bibliography so I can get a feel for what can be done. Also, are
your FileMaker layouts and scripts and your EndNote export style
available for use by others?
Thanks,

I use filemaker unlimited, on a mac, across a cable modem, (in my basement).
FileMaker is crossplatform for macs and windoid.
I have a premedline database of over 8000 citations, (simple flat
file, no related files).
www.chestx-ray.com, click on RESEARCH and then click on AJR1914-1965.
The limitation is my uplink which is cable modem, not the database itself.
The structure is simple, fields for authors, title, journal, volume
etc. Exported the EndNote database as tab delimited text and then
import into Filemaker. FileMakers import function allows one to
easily match fields between the two.

Hello Kim,
I am Health Sciences Librarian from the Netherlands, Maastricht University.
I support the (campus licence) of endnote, thousands of enthousiastic users,
including students.
Wrote diverse filters for our bibliographic data
We give curriculum embedded courses on the use of endnote
We facilitate course packs (we call them e-readers) via Endnote via
Reference Web Poster
Although it is practically ok, some minor things we encounter:
> Not alle reftypes are suppported
> Author names are obligatory
> Layout is far too rigid (fonts, line spacing)
> Typical Dutch (Author) Names like "Van den Eeckhout, F.M.G." will NOT be
found searching on "Eeckhout" (one need to type exactly "Van den Eeckhout",
while virtually everything else may be found on string basis, this is quite
frustrating.
That's one of the reasons for us to investigate other ways to present data
to our clients, xml is one of the options. What we would like is a more
flexible RWP (as flexible as endnote), or a webbased endnote version of
course would be the perfect solution.
So feel free to contact me, I'd like to discuss these kind of things.
Sincerely,
Jeroen
