Endnote has great technical support--but the developers of endnote need to
be aware of networks and how to write a program that will function over a
network. There is no way around this. Even home networks are becomming
common!

We use endnote4 over a network. So far we haven't had this problem. (I too
have a home network, but haven't bought Endnote for my home yet). I have
recently moved institutes, cities and countries! In my previous Institute we
a shared read only copy for general access by multiple users and a write
only copy which can only be opened by one user at a time. Then we had the
write only version copied over the read only version very late each night.
This meant that when someone in my lab was writing a paper, we were all
using the same library with the same record numbers.
It would be nice if Endnote would allow a user to open the write only
version once for writing and others could open the same data base as read
only subsequently (akin to Microsoft Office-which also allows a notification
when a previous writer is finished-although I have never tried the
notification feature to see how well it worked) to get rid of the need to
copy it over each night.
Keeping the file on the network has the advantage that it is backed up
nightly by our IT service, automatically. I keep very few files on my actual
hard disk.
