Thank you to everyone who responded to this.

I appreciate your comments and I learnt a few new tricks that I didn't
think about earlier. I've reorganised the way I store my PDFs as a
result and hopefully I'll have it pinned down to an art at some stage!

Douglas Jensen - you mentioned two programmes: PDF Find, and PDF Index
Everything. I found PDF Index Everything via google but do you have a
link for the former?

Thanks.

BEST WISHES

Hi!

I wanted to canvas opinions on how different people manage their PDF
files on their computers. As we're relying more and more soft copies,
this is becoming quite an issue for me.

There are three things I'm interested in knowing:
(1) how files are named
(2) how files are organised/saved on the computer (Windows)
(3) if you're using Endnote X, is the built-in PDF storing feature the
way to go?

At present, I name my files as follows:
AUTHOR-SURNAME.Title of Article.pdf

While I had great intentions of storing PDF files in folders organised
according to their specific topics (e.g. trade, finance, liberalisation,
politics etc), the workload soon got the better of me and every single
PDF I've accessed in the last 9 months or so have just gone into a
generic "PRINTED" folder - as you can imagine, while it's easier to find
things because it's all in one folder, the folder is starting to balloon
out considerably and it's not easy to find then when I just want to
browse for articles on particular topics (as opposed to finding specific
articles).

I've just installed Endnote X this week and I've learnt that the
application now has a feature to store PDF files within the Endnote
library structure. I wonder if this might be a more efficient way of
storing the PDFs. Does anyone have any opinion on this, especially if
you're already using this feature?

If you have alternate ways of managing your PDFs, I would love to hear
about it.

Thanks.
