Figures won't insert ... Help?

I'm trying to insert figures into a document using word 97 and endnote
6.0 on a PC platform. The figures store in the reference OK using =
insert
image command not cut & paste. When I go to word97 and click the =
figures
button on the menu bar, I get a list of the appropriate figure
reference types. But when I press insert I get nothing where the cursor
is located in word, I get a bold heading at the end of the document
saying "list of figures", and no graphic appears in the document not
even at the end of the document.

Anyone got any ideas what's going on or what I'm doing wrong?
