Hello to the List,
I've the following problem:
I'm doing my thesis at the moment and I'm using EndNote 7.
The chair, where I'm doing my thesis, demands the following footnote format:
First appearance in a footnote:
Porter, Michael E.: Competitive strategy: techniques for analyzing
industries and competitors, New York 1980, P. 15.
Repeated citation in a footnote:
Porter, Michael E.: Competitive strategy, 1980, P. 15.
I need in the short form:
Autor's_last_name, Autor's_first_name(s): short_titel, year, Pages.
But EndNote gives me only:
Autor's_last_name: short_titel, Pages.
How can I solve the problem? Is there a way to change the short form
template for a repeated ciation?
Thanks in advance!
Greg

I haven't seen EndNote 7 yet, but version 6 gives you very little control
over the format of repeated citations in footnotes.
If you add the year to the Short Title field in your references, that would
solve part of the problem, wouldn't it? For example, the Short Title field
of the reference you quote could read:
Competitive strategy, 1980

Thanks John for your answer,
First, I think EndNote 7 gives you as little possibilities to customize the
short title as the 6.x version does: it just gives you the choice between:
short citation y/n and include title/short title y/n...
sure, to make short titles like this: "Competitive strategy, 1980" would
solve the problem, but first I would have to do this by hand, which is kind
counter-intuitive to the purpose I bought EndNote and second it's just not
very satisfying!
The only way to deal with this problem which I found on my own, is to
customize a filed and call it e.g. "Full Name" and to copy manually all
Names in that filed. than change the short title manually as you describe
above.
In the footnote templates I customize for a Journal Article as follow:
Full Name: Title|, in: Journal|, Volume.| (Year)|, No. Issue|, Special
Issue: Special Issue
This trick prevents EndNote to distinguish between surname and first name.
but this is not very satisfying at all!!!!

I'm only using EN 5 (Mac), but can't you go into the master list of
citation formats and change the way the "Short Title" format appears, insert
extra fields, etc? Then all short title formats will be formatted
as such. (Don't have my computer just now, so cannot be more precise
or test this, sorry--but help told me how to do this for other formats--is
it not allowed for the Short Title one?).

(Mark, maybe you mention that option, but I should think changing
the fields by hand once and then changing it back is much easier than
any other option.)

Or, when I was using Endnote 3, my choice was to format the entire paper
in my preferred custom short title format, then go back and manually change
the first reference only.

DM
