This is a known issue.
[From <http://www.isiresearchsoft.com/en/help/ENFAQ4.htm>] "QUICK FIX: Search
your computer (Start/Find/Files or Folders...) for ENWORD32.WLL. Keep one copy
in the EndNote directory, and keep one copy in your Word Startup directory.
Delete any other copies found by clicking on them with your right mouse button
and choosing 'Delete'."
To find which directory Word is using as the Startup directory, Run Word with
any document, select Tools/Options/File Locations and click on "Startup" (to
see the whole path, click the "Modify" button but don't modify it).

One comment - look at the file dates and keep the newer (or newest) one
to make sure you're using the EndNote 4 version of the add-on.

Another comment, I had the devil of a time finding all the instances of
enword32.wll. Oddly enough, a search only showed the copies in the EndNote
directory and the Microsoft Word startup directory. I don't know how much
difference this makes but my PC is on Windows 2000 and I'm using Word 2000.
I got this hint from endNote Support and found two more copies.
Within Word go to "Tools" on the menu bar and choose "Options" from the
drop-down menu. Click on "File Locations" and double click on the Startup
line. The folder name should give you the full path to the Word 2000
Startup folder. Make a note of this path, click on "Cancel" and close Word
completely. Use the Windows Explorer or My Computer to go that folder and
see if it contains a copy of EnWord32.WLL. This should be a location other
than C:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup, which is the default
location for a Startup folder for Word 97.
Once you have version 4.0 of EnWord32.WLL in the EndNote folder and the
Word 2000 Startup folder and no place else the message should go away when
you start Word.
