which version of Endnote did you upgrade from? Is it possible Word is trying to access the old version and not the new version?

Thanks for the reply! I upgraded from X4. I suppose it is possible, although as far as I can tell, X4 is no longer seprately installed. If this were the problem, is there something I should do?

Well I would try uninstalling endnote, deleting any reference to endnote from registry and then reinstalling endnote. But before doing that, does this only happen with an existing document, or does it happen with a new document? The other possibility is that the document itself has a corruption and following the clean up FAQ might solve the problem.

Did you try this from the knowledge base? EndNote X1 and later on Windows 7/Vista Close all open programs. Go to the EndNote program folder. This is typically C:\Program Files\EndNote XX or C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote XX Where XX represents your version of EndNote Right click on EndNote.exe and select "Run as administrator." With EndNote open, click on the Start Menu. In the search box type "regedit" (without quotes) and hit enter on your keyboard to launch the Registry Editor. Expand the "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT" folder and locate the key: "EndNote11.AddinServer" (for X1) "EndNote12.AddinServer" (for X2) "EndNote13.AddinServer" (for X3) "EndNote14.AddinServer" (for X4) "EndNote15.AddinServer" (for X5) Right Click on the AddinServer key and select Permissions. Click Advanced. Then click Add. In object name, type "Everyone" (without quotes) and click Ok. If you see "Everyone" listed here already, select that and click OK. In the Permissions entry window, go to the Delete row. Click Deny and then choose OK. Close the Registry Editor and close EndNote. Start EndNote and Word normally.

I did everything what was suggested. A small problem was that permission settings in Windows 7 look differently than on picture (at least in my computer). Anyway, finally the message "invalid class string" changed to "the requested operation requires elevation". So, I am also running word as administrator now and everything looks OK now. Thank you. Jan

Oh, and there was a Blue tooth conflict reported: see this thread? Don't know if that got fixed in X5.0.1?

Greetings, I worked with another user yesterday who had been encountering this same behavior. After checking the “COM Add-ins” window in Word 2010, we removed a "Send to Bluetooth" add-in. Once this mentioned add-in was removed, Word no longer prompted about changes to the Normal template and would no longer crash. I would suggest checking your Word installation for other third party add-in files- 1. Open a Word document. 2, In Word, click "File>Options". 3. Go to the "Add-ins" tab. 4. Leave the "Manage" drop down set to "COM Add-ins" and press "Go". Take note of what is listed here, whether the add-in is checked or not, and let me know what you find. Best Regards, Jimmy M.
