It may be  a corruption in the document.   While the phenotype is different, I suggest following the fix described in this FAQ.  This should remove any errant field codes and the server busy message will hopefully go away.

thank you. I have tried this and alas, it still hasn't worked. Even when working in a new shorter document,  I get these errors-- a tremendous waiting time between inserting a citation and when the freeze is finally over. i have switched to Word 2010 and still have issues....   any other ideas? Many thanks to anyone who can help

Just wondering but did you:   1. Uninstall X2 before installing X4; and   2. Checked the CWYW application setting to confirm it's set to "EndNote" (not EndNote Web)?  [Go to the MS Word toolbar, click the EndNote tab, under "Export to EndNote" click to select "Preferences".  Within the Preferences window, click the "Application" tab.)   Otherwise, tech support (phone or email) is available at: http://www.endnote.com/support/entechform.asp

Just to update anyone else who might have the same problem. I called Tech Support today who was a VERY knowlegable man -- who patiently helped me work through the problem.     The issue was my large library  (700+ refs) that had probably had some corruptions given its been used with several different endnote editions. Recovering my library was the trick, and using the new recovered version seems to have worked.   Thanks for all your help everyone and thank you to Mr. Johnson at tech support who helped so well!

Very very happy!  :smileyhappy: Good advice about the repair library --- but 700 isn't that big of a library!

I just imported a folder with 625 pdfs and not a single pdf has pulled in the author, year, journal, etc. Although some of these are scanned files, most are not. In fact, the only field that has been filled in, other than the title, for some of these, is the doi! For example, for one pdf, it put the correct doi in the doi entry area: 10.1093/deafed/enn011. I checked and this article IS in Crossreg.org. But still - nothing. Like another poster said, this is the reason I bought the upgrade.

The connection to http://www.crossref.org/ that EndNote relies on is occasionally a bit temperamental. I just did the following tests with this doi:10.1093/deafed/enn011 and had success with all of them.   - I searched crossref using the crossref connection file in EndNote X4 - it found the record - I downloaded the free PDF of this article from PubMed Central and imported this PDF into EndNote - this successfully created a new EndNote record with the appropriate fielded data and attached the PDF. - I created a PDF that contained some text and the string doi:10.1093/deafed/enn011 - this also successfully created a new EndNote record with the appropriate fielded data and attached the PDF.   Based on this, I would suggest trying the import again as the CrossRef service might have been temporarily down.   Also, feel free to send  me a few sample PDFs and we can look into these to see if there are issues that we can tweak in EndNote.   The upcoming EndNote X4.02 update will include some additional improvements to the PDF importing feature.   Jason Rollins, the EndNote team jason [dot] rollins [@] thomsonreuters [dot] com

I am still unsuccessful in getting doi: 10.1093/deafed/enn011 to load in the any information. Just in case it was just my download, I also redownloaded the file from the open access source. However, when I import it (File-Import-File, with settings as: Import option - pdf, Duplicates - import all, Text translation - no translation), I get an entry with only the file name as the title (J. Deaf Stud. Deaf Educ.-2009-DesJardin-22-43[1].pdf), the poi under poi (10.1093/deafed/enn011), and the pdf attached under file attachments. Nothing else there -  no author, journal, etc. What step am I missing??

I finally got this working. Not sure if it was the newest update (X4.0.2) or what happened. But, it's working - about 1/7th of my articles worked. Not as great as expected, but it's something!

Do the other PDF articles that you tried to import all contain DOIs that can be correctly resolved against PubMed or CrossRef? If yes, and these are still not importing into EndNote, please send me a sample and we will investigate.   Jason Rollins, the EndNote team jason [dot] rollins [@] thomsonreuters [dot] com

Jason, I expect that most of them don't. Some of the articles are scanned articles. For the others, I've found that many don't have the doi until the last page, don't have one at all (these articles span decades), or don't have have the doi before the number. So, I wasn't terribly surprised that so few imported. Hopefully in the future journals will start putting the doi earlier on and clearly marked!

I've been using X4 now for a couple weeks on the Mac. As far as I can tell, the PDF import function is an epic fail. Not one of the PDFs I tried has worked and each has given the results others have reported; specifically, the name of the PDF in the title field and the DOI field set correctly. Obviously, X4 is reading the DOI. I took the DOI that was generated in the reference and plugged it in to CrossRef.org and it came up accurately. It is not the case that CrossRef was down. There is no X4.0.2 update for the Mac yet. Has that update helped on the Windows side? In any case, this "feature" that was touted as a major reason to upgrade seems much closer to vaporware than anything useful.

fhaist- We had another person here having the same pdf problems as I had been (and that you seem to be having). I suggested that she download the update before I came to help her and that seemed to have made the problem dissapear. The update states that "PDF imports now search PubMed to complete citation data with additional fields not found in CrossRef. " So, it's possible that this was the key for us. I hope they  have an update for you soon.

I want to update this post because all issues appear to be resolved. Thanks to the very helpful efforts of Jason Rollins at Thomson Reuters. It seems that the source of the problem for X4 on the Mac was that the default CrossRef (EBSCO) connection file did not connect to a reliable database. Dr. Rollins supplied a new CrossRef connection file and now the PDF import works like a charm. I can simply drop a PDF onto the EndNote icon on my dock and the ref is imported automagically. I don't think Dr. Rollins would mind, so I am posting the CrossRef file that he sent me. This just needs to be placed in your Connections directory. He also mentioned that the X4.0.2 update uses the PubMed database in addition to CrossRef, hence that update can improve the import function for those references in PubMed. The update should be available for the Mac soon.   Again, many thanks to Dr. Rollins on his very quick and helpful support and to make this feature work with the EndNote on Mac.

slpscientist - Thanks for the post. I saw that just after I posted my update. I'm not sure if the new CrossRef.enz file is included in the update. If not, everyone should download that and install it so the CrossRef part of the DOI searches will work.

FWIW, I've found that some venders are still not posting Searchable PDF's to their databases, especially for older articles.  Even if the imaged based (non searchable) PDF contains a DOI in text, endnote can't find it.  The same would be true for scanned PDF's.  We've taken to running all our image-based PDF's through Adobe's OCR feature in the full version of Acrobat.  The purpose is 3-fold.  First, if you use their "ClearType" feature it shrinks the PDF (sometimes up to 50%). Second, it renders them searchable (it's OCR, so it's never 100% accuracy, but it's good enough) which allows us to use the Search Field in Endnote.  Third, if there is DOI information in our document, endnote can now (sometimes, see note on OCR above) pick it up.

The current method of manually coping over the information or relinking pdfs from the desktop works if there are only one or two files. I have thousands. So if anyone could figure out a way to merge references or simply transfer the pdf file, I would really appreciate it.

Why "Digital Object Identifier" wouldn't work? Endnote should really search for both "DOI" and "Digital Object Identifier". All of my IEEE papers don't have the string "DOI" :(   Any plan for this update?

In the endnote program, it should be there, in the  tools menu:  "recover library".
