Hi
I don't use version 5 but why not have the one entry in the database for
Smith and then have all the notes including page numbers in the notes field.
Otherwise it will not format the reference list corectly will it - the apges
numbers will just be page 10?

Greetings,
Although I have been a user of Endnote for some years now, I am new to this
list. I have recently purchased endnote version 5.
Endnote is heavily oriented towards American, British and Australian
libraries. (connections/filters etc).
My primary need is to be able to connect and import from libaries in
Germany and Austria. e.g Staatsbibliothek in Berlin and Munich, University
Libraries and Research Libraries in Berlin, Bonn, Vienna, Heidelberg,
Regensburg, Bamberg, Salzburg etc.etc.
Could you please advise how I go about this?
There must be other users with this basic requirement. I also have a
colleague in our Department who would like to be able to connect to Asian
libraries.
Many thanks,
Greg Munro

Somebody asked: Has anyone found a way to search multiple Endnote libraries
for an author?
I sometimes want to use the same author in a later project, but cannot
remember which library I placed him/her into?
I don't know how to solved the members dilemma but I know how to avoid the
problem altogether.
I think the best way is to use just one library for all projects to avoid
confusion.
However, each article has to be specifically marked as for its project
application. What do I? In notes section a put a specific project
code -something meaningful. If you write an article about dinosaurs you may
have your code "dinosaurhunt". Even if you library is huge you may see all
your relevant papers instantly if you do search within notes for
"dinosaurhunt". The beauty of this solution is that one article can easily
belong to many projects.

Hello,=20
Thank you, Robert, for this information about the NLMweb site file
describing the Medline indexed publication.=20
Could you let us know the complete address of this file by sending this
URL to the Endnote-interest list ?=20
Thank you in advance,=20

Objet : Abbreviations for journals - who needs them?
Artur is quite correct in his comments about PubMed abbreviations. A=20
mitigating factor is that most journals (at least the ones I submit to) =
want the abbreviations rather than the full titles of journals in the
list=20
of references. But sometimes it is not obvious how to correctly =
convert
from one to the other (in either direction). So a few months ago I
found a=20
text file on the NLM web site that contained all 14104 publications
indexed=20
by medline. This file contained the following data:
Full Journal Title
Index Medicus abbreviation
A unique number called the Journal ID
ISSN
A code consisting of three letters or digits called the MedCode
(I=20
don't know what it is)
ISSN
ISO abreviation
NLM ID
Although this file contains a vast amount of information, I found that=20
there are a few problems. One was that the Full Journal Title as given
by=20
NLM is not always what journals want in their references. For example:
Medline abbreviation: Immunotechnology
Full NLM title: Immunotechnology : an international journal =
of
immunological engineering.
Preferred title by journals: Immunotechnology
or:
Medline abbreviation: In Vitro Cell Dev Biol
Full NLM title: In vitro cellular & developmental biology=20
: journal of the Tissue Culture Association.
Preferred title by journals: In Vitro Cellular and
Developmental=20
Biology
Notice that the NLM full title contains extra words that are not =
usually
used in references in journal articles and the NLM capitalizes only the =
first word in the title unless there is a proper name in it.
Fortunately, the "Medical" terms list that comes with Endnote sensibly=20
gives journal titles in the preferred format (i.e., dropping the
normally=20
unused words and capitalizing title words in the normally accepted=20
manner). Moreover, the Endnote file gives Medline abbreviations with
and=20
without periods whereas the NLM gives only the abbreviations without =
the
periods.
I think that the Endnote file is all one is likely to need (it contains =
8809 titles), but because I'm a bit of a geek, I created a Microsoft
Access=20
database that contains all of the NLM data as well as the matching data =
from the Endnote-supplied list. Obviously, since there are more NLM=20
titles, not all records have the matching Endnote data.
In addition, I created an interface that allows you type in any part of
a=20
title you know (up to five words) and it will find all the matching
entries=20
in the database. For instance, if you type in "cell in vit dev" =
(notice
that neither the order nor the complete word is important) it will find
two=20
journals: "In Vitro Cellular and Developmental Biology" and "In Vitro=20
Cellular and Developmental Biology. Animal." It gives the Index =
Medicus
abbreviation as well as the Endnote version of the title. The NLM =
title
is=20
in the underlying table if you want to look it up manually.
The database is a little raw; the interface could perhaps be a little
more=20
functional, but it works well for what it does.
I found out recently that the NLM text file from which I created this=20
database is no longer available. They now provide a PDF file=20
instead. However, I would be willing to make my database available to=20
anyone who wants to use it except that I don't have a website to put it
up=20
on where people can go to download it. So if anyone out there does =
have
a=20
website and is interested in making my database available, I will
provide=20
it. However, there are a few caveats to this:
It is "as is". What you do with it is your business, but I
don't=20
want to have to support it.
I would prefer not to send it to a whole bunch of individuals =
as
an email attachment.
It is written in Microsoft Access 2000, so you will need to =
have
a=20
Windows based machine with Access 2000 or Access 2002 (XP) to run it.
The source code will be available. It is not complicated, but I =
didn't document it very much.
If you have a website and are interested, you can contact me directly.

Hi,
I'm having an odd problem with citations when I use EndNote 4 in
Word 2001 (windows XP). I wonder if anyone had that experience before.
Normally I add a citation before the end of a sentence, i.e.
immediately before the period mark [author, year, #]. Then I formatted
the bibliography. But if I then unformat it, the citation will appear
after the period mark; [author, year, #]and same position if I
reformatted. (author, year) I tried to add a space before the citation
in unformatted text, it still didn't help.
I'm crazy now if I have to manually correct each one in a paper with
citations.
Thanks for your help!

Dear List,
I'm happy to announce the existence of an alternative mailing list
archive. The archives contain almost all messages send to the EndNote,
ProCite and Reference Manager mailing list between 1998 and 2002. The
archives are updated hourly.
(Offered with full support of ISI ResearchSoft and Mark Tyler Day
(ProCite List Owner)).
The main advantage of this archive: search all three lists all
together or separately. Searching all lists at once can be a plus if
you are looking for issues like "electronic sources" or "citing
electronic journals" or "filing by record number". Some issues go
beyond one software package.

Dear EndNote users,
Adept Scientific, ISI ResearchSoft's partner in the United Kingdom and
Germany, has (with ISI's permission) archived all postings to the
EndNote-Interest Mailing List since May 2000. These archives are at
http://lists.adeptscience.co.uk/endnote/
The EndNote-Interest Mailing List Archive forms a continuously-growing
online resource of messages posted to the mailing list. You can view the
archives indexed by Topic or by Date, or Search for the keywords relating
to the information you are seeking. This provides an easy way for people
to locate past postings and to track down information that has been
discussed in this forum.
We have, wherever possible, stripped out list subscriber e-mail details in
the archive so that list users won't be spammed by people who search web
sites for e-mail addresses.
We hope you find this service useful, and welcome any feedback, either to
the list or privately to "endnote"

Yes, please do something about the OLE interface: Iดd really like to
integrate EndNote with my word processor and could write the code myself,
only some documentation would be neccessary.
I asked customer service about it, but they forwarded it to somebody else
and I never heard about it again.

Suggestions for future development
----------------------------------------------------------------------

From: "Marshall Feldman" "marsh"
Subject: Suggestions for future development
Hi,
I just finished a rather long process correcting entries in an EndNote
library. Based on that experience, I have a couple of suggestions for the
future.
1. Add a "time stamp" field to each bibliographic entry. Record the
times
the entry was created and last modified.
2. Perhaps also add a "signature" of some sort to each record. The
purpose
would be to record WHO created the record, on WHICH computer, WHO last
modified the record, and on WHICH computer. To save space and allow
standardization, users could "log in" to Endnote, with their name and
initials or other identifier, and EndNote could ask for a machine name or
identifier during installation.
3. Allow fields to refer to the content of other fields. For
instance,
allow the Label field to include references to the record number. That way
if the record in imported into another library, there's a ready-made field
of information allowing you to go back and figure out exactly where the
record came from.
4. Expand the search feature. Allow a first search for records
having
certain content and then allow for a second search based on the results of
the first. For instance, Search 1 identifies all records with "Entered by
George" in the Label field; Search 2 finds all records with titles matching
the records selected in the first search.
5. Allow "fuzzy" searches -- similar but not identical records.
6. Add rules and something like regular expressions to the search
feature.
For instance, make it easy to find every record which has the first letter
of each word in its title capitalized.
7. Add record types, or make appropriate use of existing records
more
obvious, for (1) chapters in books (not collections, books written by a
single author), (2) papers presented at conferences (not conference
proceedings), (3) various sorts of photocopied material (forms, syllabi,
handouts, notes).
8. Add fields to identify the location of an item. For example, if
one owns
a particular book, it's on reserve in the library, and one also has
photocopies of 3 chapters in their files.
9. Allow for multiple copies of a single item. Include some way of
noting
if it's loaned out. (Without creating a custom field or duplicate records.)
10. Implement an email interface so that, for instance, EndNote can
send
you a reminder that Joe has had your book for over a year now or that you
need to renew the library book you took out. EndNote might also send Joe a
reminder.
11. Allow sub fields in some fields. For instance, allow the Label
field to
have sub fields. Provide an easy way for the user to set, search, and modify
sub fields. For instance, the Label field might have sub fields for the
reference's source, original record number, and the initials of the person
who summarized the item in the current record's Notes field.
12. Implement a macro language in something like VBA.
13. Provide OLE interfaces with common software: MS Office,
WordPerfect,
SPSS, SAS, ArcView, Adobe, etc. For instance, using Census data in SPSS, one
creates a scatterplot which is then linked to a figure record in EndNote
which, in turn, is used for a figure in a Word document. If the figure
changes in SPSS, it also changes in the Word document.
14. Provide a "fast entry" mode for citations, reminiscent of Refer
and Bib
on Unix systems. While typing a document, the user presses a function key to
toggle on "citation mode." The user then enters some words that will help
identify the exact record to use from the EndNote library (e.g., "Smith
Wealth Nations"). EndNote would then search the library to find the
appropriate reference. There could be two modes for doing this searching.
One would be manual: at some point the author stops writing and presses a
function key to initiate the search. The other would be "real time": after
the citation is entered, it turns yellow; EndNote then starts the search; if
it finds a single reference that matches, the citation turns green; if it
encounters a problem (e.g., reference not found, more than one reference
matches the search criteria, etc.), the reference turns red. EndNote
provides some way to search for problematic citations and fix them.
15. Improve Endnote's ability to import references from text files.
We've
discussed this before, and I know this is a non-trivial task which probably
cannot be completely automated. Nonetheless, there's quite a bit of room for
improvement. (E.g., let the user read in a few records and "train" EndNote
to recognize fields in the text file, move the records to a temporary
library, and (using the new macro language?) fix any errors from importing
the records.
Some of these suggestions are much easier to implement than others. I hope
at least some of them can be implemented.

The problem might be that you did not allocate enough memory to either
EndNote or Word (in MacOS X the memory is allocated automatically, but in
Classic mode you still have to adjust it manually). Get info for both
programms and give them more memory. Perhaps this helps.

Hello,
I need a question answered for endnote 5. I'm trying to create a template
for a proper citation style. The way I like to format my documents in
Microsoft word is by making the authors name flush left style and the
reference justified style. Is there some way to make a custom template do
this for me or do I have to physically alter every reference in Microsoft
word after I've formated the bibliography and then turned off the endnote
field codes? Thanks.

I have a problem with EndNote on a XP Notebook (P3 Mobile Processor,
512MB Ram)
After inserting citations, when pressing the Backspace Key, Word stops
responding. In Systemmonitor I can see that Processortime grows up to
100% and that pageerrors occur.
Any Idea how to get it working correctly?
Im testing with a free trial of EndNote, are there known problems with
this - maybe special - version?

I got a problem with citation import from ISI Web of Knowledge. It
has a special item:"times cited" in field"Notes",but it also have other item
in this field such as "ISI number" and "journal name". If I want to just
keep the "times cited" item and copy them into another field, what should I
do? Can I create a new filter to do this?

I think the best Journal list is not in table format, and realizing that I
only use Medical Journals, is found at PubMed in their Journal Listing.
This also has a link to the journals themselves for downloading the
articles.

Hi,
I just bought EndNote 6.0 for Windows, and I'm using it with Windows XP.
I've found that everytime I turn on the Cite as You Write macros,
Microsoft Word crashes--roughly every 5 minutes or so. Quite
frustrating. Apologies if this replicates similar postings.

Hi,
In fact, my question is directed towards the staff in ISIresearchsoft. When
will Endnote have a checkbox in the "Library" window? I ask this question
every time when there is an upgrade? To me, version 6 is no different from
version 2 or 3 as long as there is no checkbox. Since both Procite and
Reference Manager are from the same company, I see no reason in threatening
to quit using Endnote. (In fact, there are other choices e.g. GetaRef, which
are pretty good!!!) On the other hand, if ISI decided that there will not be
any checkbox in Endnote (and never will!!!) in order to distinguish it from
Procite and RM, I think it would be fair for ISI to clarify this so that the
faithful followers of ENDNOTE can make a decision earlier.

hi
I am trying to create a numbered master bibliography for a
document of several chapters. My problem is that I then want to
insert separate numbered bibliographies at the end of each
chapter, where the references refer to citations in the chapter, and
the bibliographical numbers are identical with the the relevant
references in the final master bibliography. I am using Endnote 4,
but could upgrade if necessary.
any help much appreciated.

Unformat the document and reformat it. The non-existent record is in the
temporary library. The next time, it won't be able to find the #515 and you
should edit that reference to the correct one.

Subject: Getting rid of deleted citation in manuscript
We're writing a manuscript, and developing the EndNote library at the
same time. I'm not sure of the sequence here, but here's what we see:
1) Library has a single entry, #524, referencing a particular reference,
call it Smith 2003.
2) Paper cites Smith 2003. So far, so good.
3) However, paper has another citation to Smith 2003, pointing to
(non-existent) record #515.
4) If, in Word 2000, we do a citation search, it shows both records,
#515 and #524.
5) On the other hand, if we open EndNote directly and search on Smith,
only #524 shows up.
Examining these two records (in Word) shows that #515 has the title
capitalized and the volume/page part left blank, while #524 has the
title with only the first word capitalized and the rest of the entry
filled in. What I suspect happened is someone started to enter the
info, deleted the record, and later added it back in. Perhaps the
citation was inserted into Word before the entry was deleted, I'm not
sure.
How do we get rid of references to the non-existant (there, I spelled it
both ways!) reference to Record #515, and have this non-existant record
not show up when we do an EndNote citation search (the magnifying glass
icon) from within Word?

Hi
A user experienced a strange problem with Endnote which I could not recreate
on my PC:
1. I put the cursor where I want
2. I click the button of Endnote
3. after several seconds, the page jumps to the end (instead of stay there)
4. the citation is there after I manage to find out the original place.
Could anyone help? The machine previously had Endnote 6 and but it was
causing the memory leak problem with Word XP and now it has Endnote 5.
Thanks,
David

The Biblioth่que Nationale de France has recently made its main catalogue,
BN Opale Plus, available via a Z39.50 server. The database is freely
accessible without subscription. We have created a connection file which can
be downloaded from our website at:
http://www.library.uq.edu.au/endnote/connect.html#B
The main problem is that EndNote is unable to import the diacritics
correctly. However, it seems to garble them in a consistent fashion, so you
can probably use EndNote's Change Text command to globally convert the
garbled version into the correct form. For example, you can search your
EndNote library to locate "ะc" in Any Field, and convert it to "็".
(Remember to uncheck the "Match Words" option.) This seems to work quite
well.
A couple of points on searching:
If your search retrieves too many hits, the server will return a "temporary
system error" message. Close the connection and then re-open it.
When using the search options "Word/s Anywhere" and "Phrase Anywhere", do
not use the operator AND to add further search terms.

I ended up changing the names of my Custom fields to, eg, Cust1-Archives so
that I have the real name I recognise as well as the Custom1 name for
searching. I have them as term lists and it helps when showing them too. I
never found a way to customise them.

Hi,
I am using Endnote 4. PubMed is the only database I use and connecting is
usually a few clicks away. In recent few weeks, it seems that something is
going on and searching PubMed using the connection file is no longer
possible. I read the Endnote website and it said that we can no longer
access PubMed using connection file with Endnote 4. Any body can help? I
don't want to upgrade it to version 6.

Hallo!
i'm trying to import the results of the database-research from chemical
abstracts into endnote. not really difficult for the new database. but ive
got problems working with CAS-entries from 1997 and older.
there are just 5 tags: AN, TI, BI, KW, IN
the most needed information stands behind "BI"
for example:
AN 127:267606
TI Optimal remediation policy selection under general conditions.
BI Wang, M.; Zheng, C. (Dep. Geol., Univ. Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL
35487-0338, USA). Ground Water, 35(5), 757-764 (English) 1997 Ground Water
Publishing CODEN: GRWAAP. ISSN: 0017-467X. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA
Section: 61 (Water)
AB A new simulation-optimization model has been developed for the optimal
design of ground-water remediation systems under a variety of field
conditions.........
KW groundwater pollution remediation policy selection
IN Environmental modeling, .....
im trying to write a filter to get the entries from BI to put them in the
right fields: Author, Year, Journal/Conference Name, Pages, CODEN,
Language, ISSN.
is there any filter to import all the informations from the older database
in the right order into the endnote-library?
how can endnote recognize the Document Type?
thanks!

I have a call in to CSA about this but it seems to be taking a while to get
back to me so ...
My connection to Z3950.csa.org was rejected by the host. Do sites
specifically have to request that CSA allow connection via Z39.50 like you
have to do with RLIN?
As a work-around, I told my users about the filter files for the CSA
databases but they are not happy with the results. They say
"I have tried the filters, but I have yet to have any satisfaction from
using them. They are so poor on recognizing the correct field that the
amount of manual editing required negates their benefit."
And
"The CSA filter for the Biological Sciences collection gets a lot of the
information into the right fields. The year of publication, however,
sometimes is correct and other times is assigned as the first page of the
article."
Has any one experienced these problems and worked out a solution?
Thanks
Mack

Does anyone have or is there some place to get references for endnote
APA 5th style without having to create your own. There are a number of
references like Bills, electronic sources, case law that are listed but
some are not. Say for instance a reference from a dissertation and
different kinds of case law federal, state, appeal etc., web sites =
and
many others.
=20
Also, when I am doing cwyw in word when I'm in the APA 5th template my
reference page goes from double space to single spaced. Anyone know =
how
to stop this? I can go to the page and highlight it and change it to
double but I don't want to have to keep doing this.

Endnote works well with my old treo from handspring assume it would
with the newer one

Has anyone tried using EndNote with this combined PDA and mobile

It seems that Handspring is part of Palm now - according to the website
-
but the architecture of the PDA might make EndNote not work with it. The
EndNote website limits those which should work to a list of Palm models.
On
the other hand it is a very new PDA and uses the right Palm system
(5.2.1).
Any experiences or advice?
Thanks.

I would get a person skilled in automating word processing tasks to look at
it.
In Microsoft Word XP, it should be feasible to do something along the
following lines:
In the running text, insert an endnote (not to be confused with EndNote).
However, make sure the endnote marker is not a sequential number but a mark
(such as a period). This is specified as an option for endnotes.
Then, as the first entry of the endnote, insert a cross-reference to the
endnote in the running text. Make sure it displays the page on which the
endnote exists, rather than the sequential number of the endnote. There is
your page number!
Then, as the second entry of the endnote, insert the EndNote in-text
citation. Make sure it does not have an (author, year) format, but one that
displays the information you want. The list of references is created as
usual, and the first-entries of each footnote are dynamically updated to
point to the page from which it is called.
How do you get rid of the periods? Color them white.
Program the whole procedure and add it to a pushbutton for your tool bar.
I wuold not deliver a manuscript like this to a publisher, however, unless I
was certain that it made their work easier rather than more cumbersome.
Perhaps it could be converted to .rtf format to become acceptable.

Subject: "Page Reference" Style
Greetings all,
I have a question (asked on behalf of a faculty member writing a book):
You know how some books get published with a citation system that uses
no in-text notes/numbers, but has notes grouped at the end of the book
that go something like this:
59, "never understood by the other children." Mugwump's childhood
relationships as portrayed in Richard Andrews, _The Last of the
Mohicans_, New York: Knopf, 1978, p. 23.
[where 59 is the page number to which the citation applies].
There is also a bibliography in the end matter.
Is there such an EndNote style? Of course, the page numbers can't be
valid until the book is typeset anyway. Of course one could use EndNote
to "copy formatted" citations to plug in to the notes, but then those
notes wouldn't update if you updated the library.
Footnotes can be converted to endnotes, but the numbers would need to
refer to page numbers rather than being 1, 2, 3, etc. Of course pages
could have multiple "notes."
Is it still beneficial to use EndNote in this situation? Perhaps
creating the "page reference style" is something that the publisher
handles? (The book doesn't have a publisher yet, so I don't have a
publisher to ask.) What is the most logical way to do this?
Many thanks,
Shana

Check that you have not manually edited this particular citation by giving
it the prefix M.
If the Dunn in this case is actually LM Dunn, check that there is not an
extra comma in the author field.
Check the setting for ambiguous citations and if there is a chance that
EndNote might consider this particular citation to be ambiguous.

Subject: APA author formatting
In writing my dissertation using the APA 5th style, I have come across an
idiosyncratic glitch that appears limited to a single citation. I have
several citations for an M. Dunn; there is also an L.M. Dunn. For some
reason on one citation only, the format is coming out as:
(M. Dunn, Flax, & Sliwinski, 1996)
I don't want that initial there, and I don't know how to get rid of it. I'm
also quite puzzled as to why this is taking place only on this citation. Any
help will be appreciated.

Hi All,
So far, I had the endnote WoS (ISI) connection file working perfectly (after
changing the connection URL to
gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcAuth=ISIResearchSoft&SrcApp=EndNote&DestA
pp=WOS
Today, it seems that something had changed and I missed it. It connects but
then
a window pops up with a question if I wish to open 'Thomson ISI - eSource'
in
the default browser.
When I click on 'Yes' on the window, I get to a page
(http://www.isinet.com/esource/), which has a message...
" eSource? has been discontinued. Please go to www.shopisi.net for
information
about other ISI resources."
Please let me know if you have had luck and your connection URL if its
different
than above.
Thanks,
Sameer

I bought my endnote in 2001 and he worked perfectly with the word 2000 and
XP. I installed now the Word 2003 and I don't get to do insert citations
with the command Insert Select Citation(s). The message mistake is: There no
references select in the front EndNote library. What is not true.
thank you for your attention.

Hi Thomas, and Troy,
I have endnote 7 running on Panther just as well with 600 odd Mb of ram
on a G4 laptop (933) and it is painfully slow.
Any ideas why?
Cheers

appeared on teh screen and I was able to print a copy BUT after I
closed/reopened the document the web addresses had disappeared!! Can anyone
advise how to get them to stik??
Thanks

Dear EndNote-listers,
A colleague has been using EndNote 2 with MS Word 97. Now she has changed to
MS Word XP and EndNote is not able to scan her Word XP documents in order to
format citations and bibliography. Does she have to upgrade EndNote, or is
there another way of doing this?
