Citing article in an Internet-only journal (APA v5)

The APA v5 guide (section 4.16, item 72, on page 272) specifies the
following as the correct citation for an article in an Internet-only
journal:
Frederickson, B.L. (2000, March 7). Cultivating positive emotions to
optimize health and well-being. Prevention & Treatment, 3, Article
0001a. Retrieved November 20, 2000, from
http://journals.apa.org/prevention/volume3/pre0030001a.html.
I am using the Endnote provided APA 5th style.
The only way I can (I think) achieve this is using the "Electronic
Article" format instead of "Journal Article" format in EndNote X1. But
it isn't perfect, and that's where I need your help to get it right.
When I use the "Electronic Article" Reference Type format, I don't get
the date retrieved, and I only get the first word of the journal name.
Everything else appears to be ok.
Would appreciate input and suggestions to fix this.
Thanks.

I tried it on X.0.2 putting the date retrieved in the Date Accessed
field and got
Frederickson, B. L. (2000, March 7). Cultivating positive emotions to
optimize health and well-being. Prevention & Treatment, 3, Article
0001a. Retrieved November 20, 2000, from
http://journals.apa.org/prevention/volume3/pre0030001a.html
Perhaps your APA style is corrupted.

Fred,
Unfortunately EndNote's APA 5th style does not conform the format
stipulated in the actual APA 5th edition manual so there will often be
times when you need to modify the reference type and/or output style.
The following instructions are based on EndNote X1 for Windows and is a
two-step process.
STEP 1: MODIFY THE ELECTRONIC JOURNAL REFERENCE TYPE
1. From the EndNote toolbar, go to EDIT, REFERENCES.
2. In the EndNote Preferences menu, select REFERENCE TYPES, then click
on MODIFY REFERENCE TYPES. When the Modify Reference Types menu appears,
use the pull-down Reference Type menu to locate and select the
ELECTRONIC JOURNAL template.
3. Modify the Electronic Journal template by typing in the corresponding
fields below, using the "Generic" listing as a guide. When done, click
"OK" to close the menu, then "OK" again to exit the EndNote Preference
menu. [*The fields marked with an asterick can be erased and left
blank.]
GENERIC: ELECTRONIC ARTICLE:
Author Author
Year Year
Title Title
Secondary Title Journal
Place Published *City
Publisher *Publisher
Volume Volume
Number Issue
URL URL
Access Date Access Date
STEP 2: MODIFY THE APA 5TH OUTPUT STYLE
1.In the EndNote toolbar, select EDIT, OUTPUT STYLES, EDIT APA 5th. This
will bring up the APA 5th style.
2. In the left column, locate "Bibliography" then click on TEMPLATES.
3. Click on the REFERENCE TYPE pull-down menu and select "Electronic
Journal". Then create the string of fields and commands using the
"Insert Field" pull-down menu to create the template below. (Note: The
asterick represents the LINK ADJACENT TEXT command. Also, the accent
symbol (located on the tilde key) tells EndNote to include non-fields as
text, such as 'Retrieved', to appear in the citation.)
Author. (Year). Title. Journal|,*Volume|(Issue)|. 'Retrieved'*Access
Date|,*'from'*URL
Once you become accustomed to modifying EndNote's reference types and
output styles, you can easily adapt them to fully conform to the APA 5th
citations shown in the manual.
Hope this helps and good luck.
Chick

No one in the discussion a couple of week's ago seemed to be aware that
APA 5th has had a significant revision for the referencing of electronic
resources.
In particular, use of dates of retrieval or even a retrieval statement
at all (if there is a DOI) is often no longer required. Also - as far as
I can make out - use of [Electronic version] has also been discontinued,
in favour of putting a brief note (e.g. "Advance online publication.")
before the retrieval statement.
Some details of the APA revision are available on the APA Web site
http://apastyle.apa.org/elecmedia.html
but I would recommend getting
hold of the 24 page booklet "APA style guide to electronic references",
which totally updates section 4.16 (pp. 268-281) in the APA Publication
manual.
The change to the APA 5th output style went some way to addressing this
revision.
