In my view, this is a problematic way of thinking about work tools.
(Yes, I realize this is pure opinion, but that doesn't make it
irrelevant.)

<opinion>

One should not, in my view, simply decide to switch out one working,
useful, well-known technology (EndNote, in this case) just because
they'd "really like" to get some new, untested application installed.

If, after touring a new version of Word, you really know that you can
not do without some new feature (there can't be many more, Word already
has too many), *then* start touring alternatives to the technology that
you already know how to use (that is, alternatives to EndNote).

When folks make decisions like this, whether organizational or personal,
they end up with two new technologies, neither of which they know well,
and work is stalled. I've seen it over and over.

As Rumi said, "Take small sips of life." The same is true of computing
environments: make one small change, see how things go, and then assess
and proceed.

Any way, I just don't think you're going to find a new Mac Word
radically different from the present new one.

EndNote will catch up to Word, of course, and that will be in plenty of
time to fit very nicely with your new skills in a new application.

Don't put the cart before the horse...which is entirely what I get from
your above post.

(Besides, nearly every professor that I've spoken with is prohibiting
the latest Word version, until the ".docx" file opening problem is
solved. So, we won't even buy the new Word for a year...and it's hard
to resist at $62 university pricing. It just causes more problems than
it solves.)

Let things ride until you have an actual reason to switch up.
