online books, citing - wiki-model??

online books, citing - wiki-model??
Author: Ken Firestein    Posted: Fri, 19 Jan 2007 17:26:32 -0500
Below is not exactly an Endnote issue but a broader issue of effectively
citing material used.

We heard today that more online books are coming soon to UC... Great?!

We have had lots of online books. Often they are online equivalents of
print. Sometimes they are different or unique. Sometimes they are books
that are regularly, contantly?, often updated. SO - how can things that
are often changing be effectively referenced in research publications? I
imagine, for example, quoting a page in such a publication and then
month's later when someone wants to check the reference they will find
either new information or none or that the info has moved... etc, etc...

In the past I have suggested that the author print and/or download a
copy of that specific online item which they found and used. Thus the
author can show that they did use what they said they used. This does
not help the readers, though.

ANOTHER idea/solution might be to use the wikipedia model where when
changes are made they are preserved and can be brought back. Then -
users could state the specific version of the book they used and if
changes were made they could be really retrieved.

How does that seem? It would allow for changes but would also maintain
the history.
