That's because they are formatted references, rather than temporary
citations.

I don't see any elegant solution to this problem. Basically, what you
want is multiple bibliographies in the same document, and EN is designed
on the one document/one bibliography principle. Word's Master Document
option would circumvent this limitation (but it has many detractors); or
you could modify the output styles you're using to format in-text
citations as bibliography entries (quite tedious); or you could separate
your document in one document/list and re-assemble it after formatting,
using Word macros to automate the process (if you're handy with VB).

You have alluded to the answer in your email: you need to create an
output style which uses your bibliography format for your in-text
citations, and then delete all the templates for bibliography citations.
Then, you just put your references into your text in the appropriate
spot. The only downside to this is that you need to order your
references (e.g., alphabetically and by year) manually.

There are other ways of doing it: using subject bibliographies, for
example, or taking "snapshot" bibliographies using several sets of
temporary citation delimiters, but none is as dynamic or as easy as the
method above.

Subject: Updatable independent bibliographies?

I've looked in the archives, and couldn't find an answer to my problem
there; apologies if it's an obvious frequently answered item.

I'm using Endnote 9.0.1 on Windows XP, with Word 2003. I'd like to put
reference lists inside a text, with no in-text citations leading to
them. Basically, the final document will be structured something list
this:

A bunch of text providing an introduction to the list of citations.

Citation 1
Citation 2
Citation 3

A bunch of text providing a segue from the first reference list to
the second.

Citation 4
Citation 5

Text providing another segue.

And so forth.

I know that I can use CTRL+drag to get the citations into the right
place, but this provides completely static citations, and I'd like to be
able to re-format these citations between MLA and APA styles for
different audiences. I could, of course, create two different documents
by CTRL+dragging the same references with different reference styles
into each of them, but that increases the chances of bringing in errors.

Anyway--is this possible? One possibility might be to insert inline
citations that show up not as, for instance, (Labov 1994) but as Labov,
William. 1994. Principles of linguistic change. Oxford: Blackwell. (And
then not have a bibliographic list at the end of the document.) I can't
figure out how to do that, either, though.

All suggestions are appreciated.
