Based on the one time I investigated such a report, the user had copied
the EndNote 9 library, but not the accompanying data folder. Copying
both solved the problem.

We have EndNote 9 on our workstations but many students have X on their
laptops. ISI assure me that v. 9 ought to be able to open v.10 libraries
and I'm starting to wonder if there's something peculiar about the way
these students are saving or transferring their material.

I think that Endnote 10 has some additional reference types, and if the
students use them, it could create problems?

Although EndNote X is backwardly compatible with EndNote 9, there is one
pitfall.
If you try to open an EndNote X library in EndNote 9, you must have the
DATA folder as well as the .enl file. If you don't have the DATA folder,
the .enl file will open, but it will be empty. This is a bit of a
nuisance. EndNote X has a neat function to compress the .enl file and
DATA folder into a single .enlx file, which is great if you are sending
it to another EndNote X user, but useless if you are sending it to an
EndNote 9 user. EndNote 9 cannot open an .enlx file.
So you have to zip the .enl file and DATA folder and send the zipped
archive to the EndNote 9 user, who has to unzip them before use.
Although the DATA folder has been around for years, we've been
accustomed to ignoring it if we weren't storing special term lists in
it. We have to get used to the idea that the DATA folder is an essential
part of the library now. However, if you are using EndNote 9 or X, you
can still send an .enl file to an EndNote X user and the DATA folder
will be successfully recreated when the .enl file is opened.
