I can import neither records nor entire databases from ProCite 5.0 Mac to EndNote 8.0 Mac. Whatever I do it is without any success. The manual is not very helpful. Who can help? Thank you,

I'm engaged in a collaborative research project and we have set up a new
endnote library on a shared server. As the project has a specific focus
including a significant literature review we have used custom fields to
facilitate shared coding etc. however, we now find that the custom
fields show up in our own personal endnotes - is there any way to keep
two library independent in terms of structure.

I approaches support at Endnote on this problem and it turned out you cannot directly import into Endnote 8, but you can into Endnote 7 and from there into 8. They kindly offered to convert my databases for me, after which I opened them in 8. If you want full control over where your data end up, you'd better write an Output style for ProCite and an import filter for Endnote though. I describe this process for a transfer to Bookends here:

This might be a case where upgrading to EndNote 8.0.2 would be helpful. In
earlier versions of EndNote, modifications to reference types are stored in
the Windows Registry. But in 8.0.2 they are stored in a file in the user's
Application Data folder. So you could set up two different identities on
your PC: one to use when working on the collaborative project, and a
different identity for your own projects.

However I haven't tested this with EndNote 8.0.2 on a shared server, so I
can't guarantee that it would work in that setup. Perhaps you should ask the
Technical Support people at EndNote about this.

Endnote7- "invalid index detected"
Author:    Posted: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 12:27:36 -0500
Hi All
Has anyone come across the error message "detecting invalid index" when opening endnote libraries in Endnote 7?
The program appears to be working OK otherwise (Windows XP and Office 2003) , is this something I should be concerned about?
Thanks for any ideas,

Help! Serious EndNote 8.0.2 bug!
Author:    Posted: Mon, 31 Jan 2005 12:43:13 -0500
Hi all --

I just upgraded EndNote 8.0.1 to EndNote 8.0.2. When I'm working on a
Word document, whenever I try to insert a citation, I get a alert that says
"An attempt was made to access an unnamed file past its end." and it doesn't
work.
How can I fix this?

Apparent bug and crash in EndNote 8 for Mac (while editing styles)
Author:    Posted: Tue, 1 Feb 2005 13:14:14 -0500 (
This is a semi-formal report on a reproducible crash and seeming bug in EndNote 8.0.3 under Mac OS X (Panther) while editing a style. I've encountered the same or a similar problem a couple of times, and though I'm not computer expert, it strikes me as a bug, or a significant problem anyway.

I've created a style named "All data" based on the "Show data" style that comes with EN. As it stands it contains all 52 fields in the Generic reference type, each on a single line, terminated with a paragraph mark. I've started to insert the appropriate field names in front of each field line, by pasting

`xxxxx: `<> ("XXXXX:" is bold-faced, <> = non-breaking space)

at the start of each line, then selecting and editing each "xxxxx" to be the appropriate field name -- tedious, but useful when done. I'm using the Edit>>Output Styles>>All data.ens menu command to do this.

I'm only part way into this, so a typical preview display below the library window at this point looks like the following (the style at this point has only the first few field lines named; a couple more of the field names are still in "xxxxx" form; and although the library item has a Date entry and a Keywords entry those field lines have not yet been given their names):

Author: Mahajan, V. N.
Year: 1991
Title: Aberration theory made simple
xxxxx: Book
xxxxx: SPIE Optical Engineering Press, Bellingham WA
1991
Aberration theory made simple
Aberrations
Reasonably useful short publication.

OK, at this point, not wanting to lose the (still small) amount of work I've done building this style, I go to the File>>Save menu and Save, which works apparently OK. Then I enter and edit a few more field names, and decide to Save once again -- BUT NOW THE SAVE COMMAND IN THE EDIT MENU IS GREYED OUT.

Well, OK, my guess is this represents some kind of slightly sloppy or incomplete programming -- but the "Save As" command is still active, so I do a Save As, using the modified file name "All data 2" just to be safe.

Continuing on, I find I can do further editing on the "All data 2" style on which I'm now working, and can Save these add'l edits once, as before -- but again I can't Save further edits to "All data 2", I can only Save As to "All data 3".

I follow this cycle once more, up to "All data 4", then decide I'll just do a complete Quit and re-Open, just to wash out any accumulated problems with this procedure. So, I close the style editing window and Quit. EN apparently Quits, windows close -- but then an alert saying "EndNote application has unexpectedly quit" comes up, followed by an Apple alert asking if I want to file a crash report. I do send the crash report to Apple and also save a Select All, Copy and Paste version of it as a BBEdit file.

The "All data 2", 3 and 4 styles are in my Styles folder and work as they should when I re-open EN; and EN Quits OK after being re-opened.

There are several other minor but worrisome glitches I've also encountered in EN 8, but I'll skip them at the minute. But I would appreciate getting at least an acknowledgement of this message from someone, and will send any further data requested, notably the Apple crash report (about 15,000 characters) if anyone wants it.

We just had this problem a couple of weeks ago. We called Endnote Tech
support, and the solution was to replace some hidden files in some hidden
directories in the Documents and Settings folder. We thought the problem
was because we installed the patch without closing Word, so it might be
fixed by reinstalling the patch.

This is what Tech Support said:
Go to Programs\Endnote 8. Select two files named EN8CWYW... Copy
them to Documents and Settings\<Your user Directory>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup\ and replace the two existing files with the
ones you copied.

So you suspect the document and not the library, correct?

Check if there are any tracked changes. If so, accept them all.

Turn off CWYW if it is on (format bibliography, hit the disable button
on the instant formating tab)

Turn off tracked changes, if it is on.

Unformat all the endnote references. Save the file to a new name. Try
to insert a reference,

If it is still doing it.

Show all the formating symbols, if the paragraph marks are showing (the
backwards "P"s at the end of paragraphs-hit the para symbol in words
toolbar). Copy everything except the last paragraph symbol to a fresh
document.

Save and try to format. Does it work now?

EndNote 8 - installation utlity runs every time I use EndNote
Author:    Posted: Tue, 1 Feb 2005 13:37:28 -0500 (
I am facing a consistent problem with EndNote. I have EN 8 installed, and both the service patches applied - 8.0.1 and 8.0.2. It is running on an XP SP2 machine with Office XP.

The basic problem is this -

Each and every time I start up EndNote using the shortcut in the start menu or even by directly clicking on the application file, the installation utility pops up. Lots of activity, progress bars, and the message asking me to "Please wait while Windows configures EndNote 8.0.2 etc.". And then, after a long while, all these windows close, and I get into the actual application.

This happens EACH AND EVERY time I use EndNote. It is EXTREMELY annoying.

I think it has something to do with the office intergration. After many hours of frustrating installing, patching, trying it out, uninstalling, reinstalling etc. ... I find that right after a fresh, clean install, EndNote works as it should. And continues to until I open MS Word. That's when the problem starts. From that point on, even after I close MS Word, every time I try to use EndNote the problem described above occurs. Rebooting the computer etc. Does not help. From that point on, until EndNote is actually uninstaleld and reinstalled from scratch and the patches reapplied, whether or not Word is open or closed etc., EndNote insists on running the installation/configuration program before starting up.

Has anyone faced this before? Any suggestions, advice etc.? It is not a crippling problem, since I eventually get into EndNote, but it is very irritating!

From what I can tell, there is no EndNote 8.0.3 for MacOS X. In fact,
there have been no updates for EndNote 8 for the Mac since it was

HI there!

Just open "Templates and Add-insS" in Words Tools
menu and check that the file "EndNote 8 CWYW Word
2004" is checked. If it isn't (which is probably
the most likely explanation for your problem)
just check it and close the window. Your EndNote
8 toolbar should now be OK again.

Go to Tools/Program Preference/Add-ins/ and uncheck Microsoft Word. Then
the EndNote bar will come alive.

class endnote library
Author:    Posted: Thu, 3 Feb 2005 12:06:33 -0500 (
Hi all,

Have any of you found good ways to have a class cooperatively contribute
to and use an Endnote library?

I thought perhaps they could each develop independent libraries and that
then Endnote could import them as a group, but that doesn't seem to work.

Any suggestions?

Thank you for posting this fix. I would have NEVER thought about a SnagIt

I followed your instructions for the fix but it only worked after I

EndNote 8.0.3? -- and some generic cautions, gripes and suggestions
Author:    Posted: Thu, 3 Feb 2005 16:57:32 -0500 (
* EndNote 8.0.3 for the Mac?

Sorry for using this in an earlier posting -- there is indeed (so far as I know) no EndNote 8.0.3 for the Mac. (In finally making the long-delayed conversion from OS 9 to OS X I've just had to install or upgrade some thirty (really) major applications, and it's BBEdit that went from 8 to 8.0.2 to 8.0.3.)

* "EndNote Light" mode? -- a suggestion:

EndNote offers 38 Reference Types (of which, even with a diverse database of 3200 scientific references I only use 14) with each reference type having potentially 52 different fields (of which I use fewer than 20).

That means the Reference Table has just under 2000 (!) editable cells -- with no way to edit or even view it as a whole, in Excel-like fashion; no way to scan across one row of it, and no way to even compare any two columns of it side by side.

This also means that many of the drop-down menus in the rest of the program are 38 items or 52 items long, when they don't need to be.

I'll have more detailed gripes and suggestions in a minute, but as a major suggestion here: How about an optional "EndNote Light" mode that has maybe only 16 reference types and 24 field names? -- thus reducing the Reference Table size by a factor of five.

I can see where some users do genuinely need all one thousand nine hundred and seventy six (1,976) of these reference types and field names -- but I'd make a small bet that a "Light" mod like this would meet the needs (and simplify the lives) of 90+% of EndNote users.

* Editing the Reference Table: Gripes and Suggestions

1) The button that takes you to the reference table editing function says "Modify Reference Types" -- but the window that opens says "Edit Reference Types". Minor inconsistencies like this often raise worries of equally careless programming elsewhere.

2) When you type a period in front of a Reference Type in the top row of the editing column so that it will be hidden, the "Apply To All References" button activates. Do you really want that to be possible? How could you recover from it, if you did it accidentally?

(And by the way, does inserting a period hide the Reference Type in all other menus? -- I've not yet checked)

3) There is no way to scan across a Field Name row, to see how or if it's used in different reference types, right?

In fact, only the first 15 of the 52 field names show in the "Edit Reference Types" window -- and this window can't be enlarged (at least in the Mac version).

And if you scroll down to any of the remaining 37 field names to see how it's named in one reference type, then select another ref type to see how that field is used there, the new ref type comes up with the field list scrolled back up to the top, so you have to scroll back down again to get to the row where you were. Not handy at all.

4) Edit Reference Types window has an "OK" button; Edit Styles doesn't (and I've noted what seems like a serious bug in the Edit Styles window in an earlier posting).

* Reference Windows: Gripe and Suggestion

I would for sure like to be able to see all (or at least as many as physically possible) of the occupied fields of a given reference in the Reference Window, without vertical scrolling -- especially when some of the most mportant fields like Keywords, Abstract and Notes are way down in the list of fields.

On my 1024 X 768 monitor that doesn't seem to be possible in the default font and with the unnecessarily large line spacings between fields; and there do not seem to be options or preferences to change those settings.

How about some preference options to minimize the fonts and spacings in the Reference Window? And/or a global display option to put the Field Names and field contents in line in that window? (And maybe one to not wrap at the window width, so it's one line per field.)

And maybe best of all, also a global option to not display any named but empty fields in the Reference Window? (I understand that that would make it impossible to enter data in these fields -- but when you wanted to enter data, you could just switch off the preference).

Comments welcome . . . (Do suggestions like these reach the EndNote designers?)

Problem: EndNote 8.02 and Academic Search Premier Results Import
Author:    Posted: Fri, 4 Feb 2005 17:04:38 -0500 (
Using EndNote 8.02 (Build 1150), importing results from Academic Search Premier using the filter "Import using Acad Search Premier (EBSCO)" results in the date information (the PD) does not survive the import. Is this a bug or a silly user error? Can anyone suggest a workaround/repair?

Thanks!

Re: EndNote 8 - installation utlity runs every time I use EndNote
Author:    Posted: Mon, 7 Feb 2005 17:09:30 -0500 (
I believe that I've solved this problem. The key is some quirky rituals that must be done during and after installation.

Right after installing EndNote and/or the service patches, launch the EndNote program, and open an EndNote library. Then close EndNote. Then launch MS Word, and click on the EndNote tool on the toolbar to again start EndNote, and again open a library. Now close everything.

This seems to fix the problem ... hopefull permanently!

After many hours of frustrating installing, patching, trying it out, uninstalling, reinstalling etc. ... I find that right after a fresh, ! clean install, EndNote works as it should.

Natalie,

Thank you, thank you, thank you. It works. The other way that I had listed for folks no longer works for me. I love this program.

Anyway to just remove EndNote 8 program totally and go back to using EndNote 7??

Can I do that?

I am really sick of trying to make this program work. Challenging and interesting as it may be........

Editing Terms in EndNote 8: YAD (Yet Another Dumbth)
Author:    Posted: Mon, 7 Feb 2005 17:19:46 -0500 (
Open the Term window in EndNote 8 for Mac; hit "R" key to jump to
first term beginning with R; this term ("Radio" in my case) appears,
highlighted and selected, at the top of the term list window; start
hitting Down Arrow key to move down from there to the term I want
(happens to be "Rays"). THE LIST INSTANTLY JUMPS BACK BACK UP TO THE
VERY TOP OF THE TERM LIST ("Activation") AND STARTS STEPPING DOWN A
LINE AT A TIME FROM THERE.

Repeat the process, except do a mouse click on "Radio" to make sure
that term is well and truly selected. SAME RESULT.

Does EndNote not have a competitor (ProCite?) in the Mac world. Has
anyone used it? How does it compare?

EndNote 8 for Mac: Reference Window Navigation (ADDENDUM)
Author:    Posted: Mon, 7 Feb 2005 17:20:35 -0500 (
ADDENDUM: And, if you take the actions described below, then close
the reference you're looking at and open a new reference window, the
new reference window (and presumably all subsequent reference
windows) will auto-open in this same slighlty crippled condition.

-----------------------

In EndNote 8 for the Mac, if you tab all the way down through all the
fields in the reference window so that you loop back up to the first
(Author) field at the top of the window, the display doesn't return
(i.e., scroll) quite all the way to the top of the window, so that
the "Author" label and part of the first author name are not visible.

This condition remains if you tab down into lower fields, so they're
partially cut off also.

YAD. (Is there an alternative to EndNote for the Mac?)

Arabic and EndNote8.0.2
Author:    Posted: Tue, 8 Feb 2005 17:49:36 -0500 (
So, we get 8.0.2 with all the bug fixes. A user wants me to check it
works OK with Arabic before he spends good money on it.
I set my machine up for Arabic and try it, and it seems OK, except that
in the fields which are tied to term lists it flips out of RtL Arabic
into LtR English after every keystroke. I've discovered that deleting
the term lists stops this, but of course now I have a loss of
functionality. Will a new version of usp10.dll fix this, as suggested by
Gregor in one of the few relevant items I can find in the mailing list
archive? I have versions dated 15th January 2001 (1.405.2416.1, in
Office\shared) and 19th June 2003 (1.325.2195.6692, in system32),
apparently. From where might I obtain a newer file?

Re: Editing Terms in EndNote 8 for Mac
Author:    Posted: Tue, 8 Feb 2005 17:56:00 -0500 (
More observations Term Lists on EndNote 8 for Mac:

I cannot "Insert" from a Term list into the Search References fields -- a
bug that the EndNote techies have confirmed.

When I select multiple terms to Insert into a record field by clicking on
multiple non-contiguous terms using the Command button (the Apple button on
the keyboard), the terms are highlighted properly in the Term window, but
when they are inserted into the record field all of the terms between the
first and last selected are inserted. In other words, EndNote treats Command
selection like Shift selection.

The only other product I have been able to find is BookEnds, but after
working with EndNote for so many years who wants to learn more new software.
I would like to know who does the beta testing EndNote. This product, like
version 6, is just plain horrible if you want to do anything other than
download records into an EndNote library.

RE: Arabic and EndNote8.0.2
Author:    Posted: Thu, 10 Feb 2005 14:21:30 -0500
Dave,
I eventually figured out how to replace my uniscribe dll... currently v.
1.471.4063.0 ... but, for me at least, it didn't make a blind bit of
difference to the problems Gregor suggested it might address. Nor does it
address the problem you have identified.
For those of us who use complex (and/or non-latin) languages, staying
abreast of this file is probably a good thing... I think there's a Yahoo
group from which you might be able to get it... but the effect on endnote
seems to be minimal.
NB: as far as I am aware, if you put a copy of the dll in the same directory
as the endnote program then endnote will look to this version before any
other. Otherwise, it looks to the one in \windows\system32. If you have more
than one version, make sure to *copy* the newest into the endnote directory
to make sure.
Michael

Endnote 8 for Mac oddities
Author:    Posted: Thu, 10 Feb 2005 14:17:09 -0500
I have upgraded to Endnote 8 for OS X (10.3). I now find I can't
seem to save my field display preferences (I click on "save" after
making a change but nothing changes). I also find that putting . in
front of a field doesn't make it disappear from the record display
- it still appears in the list but with a . in front!

Is there a patch underway to solve some of these issues, a work-around or a known conflict?

Endnotes 7 HELP with tables
Author:    Posted: Thu, 10 Feb 2005 14:36:10 -0500
HELP PLEASE

I am struggling trying to take advantage of this feature but have several issues that are driving me mad as I try to finish my dissertation with a Monday deadline -- any help would be appreciated

If I create a table in Excel -- is there a way for EndNotes to format it per APA 4 or should I be storing the correctly formatted table as the object linked to the library entry?
When a table is inserted in my document, the line spacing between the previous paragraph and the title TABLE X is incorrect and the title and caption are inserted as bold text? Any way to fix these issues one and for all?
When I use the "find figure" command on Microsoft Word Endnotes toolbar what is inserted looks like what I have tried to display below
Does EndNotes automatically update Table and Figure numbers?
If I need to change a Table already stored in Endnotes -- if I make the changes on my original table stored in a different directory -- will the table stored as data in the EndNotes directory automatically update or do I have to re-load it into the library entry?
If anyone know of a source to get more info about this feature I would love to have it.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx text of previous paragraph

(Table 1)

Table 1

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx(the caption but not italicized)

body of the table

then improper spacing to insert the reference

OpenLink bug in Endnote?

I've configured OpenURL Link in EndNote, and it seems to work, unless the
journal name has an ampersand in it. Whenever I click the link for, say,
"Journal of Personality & Social Psychology" it searches instead for
"Journal of Personality". I have to manually edit the URL and replace the
"&" with an "and" and it works.
How can I fix this?

RE: OpenLink bug in Endnote?

Chris

We have a similar problem but with spaces. In version 8 (like 7) spaces
are replaced with %20 characters in the openurl string. In version 8.0.2
this replacement is not done, consequently the openurl string is
truncated at the first space it encounters. The resolver is unable to
interpret the result.
I've raised this with EndNote in Berkeley but they are unable to
replicate it.
Until I spotted this new bug I was considering rolling out version 8 at
Imperial but not any more, I'll wait a little longer.

Endnote 8 (Mac) Preposterously Slow?
Author:    Posted: Fri, 18 Feb 2005 12:15:49 -0500
Hi,

I just installed Endnote 8 on a spanking new G4 Powerbook, running at
1.5 GHz. When I open a library with just under 5800 references in it
and sort by year or by author, the process takes a good 20 sec., maybe
more. When I do it a second time, it takes just as long. In Endnote 5,
with the same library, it takes less than 3 sec.

What gives?

Endnote 8 for Mac question...
Author:    Posted: Fri, 18 Feb 2005 12:18:29 -0500
Hey All,

This is a new issue for me. I'm not as sophisticated an Endnote user as many
of yall, but one thing I've noticed with the latest version of Endnote is
that when I create a new reference library, the program also creates an
additional folder with data within it. This is new for me. Can anyone
explain why that is the case with this Endnote and not with past versions?

Thanks,

Khalil
