John,
I am not sure I understand the "link to PDF" bug. Does this mean that
if I upgraded, the links in the "image" field are no longer usable?
That would be reason enough for me to NEVER upgrade.

For other users, there are few benefits in upgrading. A description of
all the
new features (and remaining bugs) in EndNote 8 is given on our website
at: http://www.library.uq.edu.au/endnote/new_in_endnote8.html

I just installed the 8.02 upgrade, and now my links in the URL field do
not work anymore!
I use spaces in directory names and file names (maybe not so clever) but
it worked till an hour ago. Now endnote says:
"This URL (C:\path\filenameuntilspace) could not be launched". If I
change the spaces by underscores the problem is gone. But since I have a
lot of files in a deep structured folder system this is a lot of work to
change.
John is this the bug you mean?

"Link to PDF" is a new field in EndNote 8 which is designed to store a link to
a PDF file stored outside your library, e.g. on the web or on your hard disk.
It is a hyperlink which you can click on to open the PDF. The same feature was
available in earlier versions of EndNote, but you had to store the link in the
URL field.
Because of a bug, this field doesn't work, and you still have to store the
link in the URL field. This is no great burden, but it will cause a lot of
confusion.
If you have used the "Insert Object" command to insert the PDF into the Image
field of a reference, there should not be any problem in upgrading. When
EndNote 8 converts your library into EndNote 8 format, it also converts the
DATA folder. The PDFs should still be stored in the DATA folder and still
accessible by clicking on the icon in the Image field. I tested this with a
very small library, and the conversion went smoothly.
In EndNote 8, the DATA folder is much more important than in EndNote 7, as it
stores your term lists as well.

I set up a small library which contained links in the URL field to PDFs on my
hard drive. After conversion to EndNote 8.0.2, the links were still working.
I guess the problem is with your spaces. Have you tried using the "Change
Text" command to search for spaces in the URL field and replace them with
%20 ? (Uncheck the "Match Words" box when you do this.)
The bug that I was referring to is rather different. In EndNote 8.0.2, if you
do a right click in the "Link to PDF" field, select "Link To", and choose a
file, the link will be inserted into the URL field.
You can cut and paste the link to transfer it from the URL field to the Link
to PDF field. If you do this, it will work if you first open the reference and
then click on the link. But if the reference is closed, and you just highlight
it in the library window and click on References on the menu bar, the Open
Link option is greyed out. The Ctrl+G shortcut key does not work either.
So it's best to forget about the Link to PDF field, and just continue putting
the links in the URL field. They will work there, just as they did in earlier
versions.
