MathType-Endnote conflict

Since I installed Endnote 8 on my Mac running OS X Panther, I have noticed
some weird behavior with MathType 5. Specifically, MathType/Word 2004 crash
when I try to insert a right-numbered equation in one step using the
corresponding toolbar or MathType menu command within Word 2004. If I split
the process in two steps (entering the equation first, and then numbering
it) there is no crash.
If I remove Endnote 8 the problem disappears, but it comes back when I
reinstall Endnote. I have also tried to reverse the order of installation of
MathType and Endnote, but this doesn't help.
Has anybody else experienced similar problem either with OSX or Windows XP?
