Is there a way to find or identify or bring out only those references
having non-empty but non-named fields -- meaning references that do
have data in certain fields, but this data doesn't show up in any
view because the names of those fields in the References Types for
those particular references are blank -- without a lot of tedious
special -case searching?
This is in EndNote 8 for Mac -- and I'm in trouble because I did a
lot of customizing of reference types and fields in a very large
library under EndNote 6 under OS 9, and the conversion to EndNote 8
under OS X (Panther) did _not_ go smoothly.
(And I _have_ just subscribed to this list . . . )

If you add the field to your "display field" choices, (in edit
>preferences) you can click on the top bar for that field, and sort- the
empty fields will come to the top.

AES,
Try this: open one of the references with data in an invisible field. Change the "reference type" temporarily to "Generic." This should should all data in all fields. Note the name of the field that has the data you need. Then change the "ref type" back to whatever it was. (This doesn't affect the data.) With that information, there's two ways you can go.
1) In "Edit / Preferences," can to modify "Reference Types" to display the existing non-displaying field in the reference type you are having problems with.
2) Alternately, on the "references" menu, open the "change and move fields" menu, and go to the "change fields" tab. From there, you can move data from any one data field to any other field, and you can do it for selected references or all references. That should do it.
