I found the discussion of the C-pen interesting, and am considering getting
one
- could those who have one say a bit more about how it can be used? Can you
scan straight into Endnote, or does it have to go through a wordpad? Is the
scanning accurate? Does the writing feature also enable you to add your own
notes? Can it substitute for a PDA?
cheers

Hello,
There are some informative user reviews of C-Pen on Amazon.com (search
C-Pen in Electronics section) which is one of only a handful of "webstores"
in USA which offer C-Pen for sale, $199.99. The reviews are quite detailed
and mention pluses and a few lacks...
I certainly appreciate the Endnote listserv bringing C-Pen to my attention;
I've had faculty and graduate students asking for such a tool so it's grand
to
hear what's available.
I'm canvassing some of the techies on campus, trying to find someone who
owns one...I'd like to ask them to drop by the library for a general demo
and also in conjunction with Endnote (bribing them with brownies of course
<grin>). Our bookstore doesn't stock it but I've asked them to inquire
about any possible academic discounts..

Hello,
I'm glad to see the positive response from EndNote users to my
suggestion to use the C-pen to "take notes". Our company distributes
ISI ResearchSoft products in Scandinavia, the Baltic states, Poland
and Russia and we thought the C-pen might be a good "add-on" for
EndNote users. To this effect we demonstrated it at our
EndNote/RefMan/ProCite booth at the recent MedExpo 2001 (annual
conference for medical practitioners in Sweden) and we got some good
feedback from people already using it as well as for people who saw
it for the first time.
So far our experiences are limited, but here are a few observations
of our own plus a few we got from MedExpo 2001:
1. When you scan text, scan from right to left rather that from left
to right (that's right, C-pen can read backwards and still present
the text correctly). You see much better what you scan since you
don't hide the text with your hand (if you'ree right handed that is -
if not it's the other way around).
2. Give the pen a little white space at the start and the beginning
of the line so you don't lose text.
3. Reading (OCR) accuracy is very good indeed on printed text. Faxes
and Xerox copies may be a bit more difficult.
4. The "writing" feature gets to be a bit slow and cumbersome for my
taste. So, I see it more as a "cool feature" than really useful.
Edit your scanned text on your computer, not on the pen (even if it
can be done) it's so much more effective.
5. Yes, you can scan directly into any software that can recieve
keyboard input.
6. The lack of a cable connection (USB) to the Mac is a sad drawback
which we hope C Technologies will fix "pronto". IR connection is
already in place.
Feedback and suggestions welcome!
Best regards
Ingvar Ericson

Admittedly, I don't read all end-note postings. I'm glad I read the
discussion about the C-Pen. I wanted to let readers contemplating
purchase of the pen know that it is available at "Staples" (a large
chain of stores selling office supplies) for $162.
I only post this because it is significantly less than prices quoted
previously. Haven't used it yet but look forward to it.
Happy New Year to all.

Today researched and ordered lowest price found on-line for C-Pen 800
from Page Computer.com (178.53 plus 6.75 shipping).
Today Staples carries the C-Pen 800 for 199.99, and the C-Pen 600 for
149.99 according to their on-line quote for a store near me in New
Hampshire.
The C-Pen 600 sells for less than the C-Pen 800. The two may be confused
for one another when ordering.
Hope this helps.

Im betting the higher quoted price was for the 800C model. Remember, there
are currently 5 models of the Cpen, all with different features and prices.
I
paid about $170 for the 600C at staples. I also think it can be bought
cheaper than that.

I have the C-Pen 600 and sometimes the wireless beam does not work. I would
recommend getting the C-Pen 800 that has the USB Port.
