Exchange between PC and Mac

Hello! I know this has been up before, but we are trying to exchange EndNote libraries between a PC and a Mac but I (on the Mac) are unable to see the library from within EndNote. I have also entered a setting into PC exchange for EndNote: file type - .enl, application - EndNote and file type - text. Also double clicking the file directly doesn't help either. Nothing works. I am running version 3.1 for Mac and he has version 5 for PC, can that be the issue? Hold down the shift key on the Mac while performing the File Open function, this will show all files, not just those that the Mac already knows are associated with a program. On the Pc, make sure the file name ends in the .enl convention, and it will know it is an endnote file. Most probably. I use a 4.0 version of the program in my Macs and a 5.1 in the Windoze sistem, and it works fine. Salu2 M.

I don't think that is true, since the size constraint I think is imposed by trying to keep the libraries interchangeable between the different versions. Some of the styles, etc are not backward compatible. As others have suggested, on the Mac, start EndNote then hold the Shift key down while you select File->Open... and navigate to wherever you stored the EndNote file. This tells EndNote to show ALL files in the Open dialog, not just EndNote libraries. After you've opened the library once in EndNote you won't need to do it this way again - until you get another one from the PC. EndNote will set those Mac codes automatically when it first opens the file. Alternatively if you have ResEdit or anything similar, use it to open the ex-PC library and set the creator to ENDN and the file type to ENDB. This also works for filter files (same creator, file type EL2s), style files (type ENFT) and connection files (type ENZ3) copied from a PC to a Mac. Going the other way (Mac->PC), just ensure that the library file name has the .enl extension (filters .enf, styles .ens and connection files .enz). Ken Williams

Hello Ken! I have tried to do as you and others have suggested, but it still does not work, to open or import the Library. We even tried to save the PC library as Tab delimited but to no avail. I see the Library but I get a message as this: This file is not a valid EndNote library. It appears to be damage by conversion of the end-of-line characters in the file. This may have happened during transfer between Macintosh and Windows computers. When I tried to import the Tab delimited version there appeared to be something wrong with that format also. Where do you find ResEDit, by the way? ResEdit can be found at www.versiontracker.com. Just do a search for it there. I imagine it does have something to do with how the file is being saved on the mac and the type/creator codes. I think it must come down to the method that you used to copy the library file from the PC to the Mac. It was easy in the old days - copy it to a floppy on the PC, the Mac could read PC floppies and you just re-copied the file from the floppy to the Mac. Straight binary copies all the way, no attempts at any fancy conversions, compressing etc. required. If you have a newer Mac you may now not have a floppy drive (curse you, Steve Jobs!). If so, what exactly is your copying procedure? As for ResEdit, if you don't yet know much about it I suggest you treat it with great caution. It's a powerful Mac tool if you know what you're doing, but it can also wreak havoc in inexperienced hands! Setting file creator and type codes is a very simple ResEdit procedure, but it's a good idea to get an 'expert' to help you the first time. I'll be away for a few days now - look forward to seeing where this thread goes by the time I get back because this is isn't usually much of a problem with EndNote. Ken Williams

This problem comes time to time: copyingthe file from a PC to a mac and reverse. On the Mac, the creator and file type have to be correct. ResEdit is a tool to correct this problem, but it is a dangerous tool. I personnaly use a small program, called "ctc" that can change the file tytpe and creator of a mac file in a matter of seconds: just drag and drop the file on its icon, and a dialog pops, where you can correct the file type and creator of the file. I am not sending the file through the list server, but is people would like a copy, I can send it on request.
