Word 98/EN 4 crashes
Author: Diana Williams    Posted: 04/01/2001 13:53:10 GMT
I have a similar problem--when it came time to print my dissertation
prospectus several weeks ago (using EN 4 with the add-in and Word 98
for the Mac), my computer must have crashed 15 times. You know how in
Word 98 if you point to a footnote number, the footnote text appears in a
pop-up menu? Well, whenever the cursor would even pass over one of those
footnote numbers, the computer would crash. I solved the problem by
giving up on Word 98 (I can't stand how it puts the footnotes in the wrong
place anyway, and the bug fixes don't seem to work well if you use
endnote) and converting my important, formatted documents back to Word
5.1. But I'd appreciate other suggestions, because although Word 5.1 is a
better word processor, Word 5.1 docs can't get sent as attachments in
pine.

Thanks,
Diana

A[nother]well known bug in Word. Do you have your screen depth set to
thousands?? [Setting the screen to show millions of colours causes
all sorts of glitches]

You might find it worthwhile to rip all the Microsoft extensions out
of the Extensions folder in your System Folder, and then re-install
Word, which will replace them all with new copies. I find [found]
that re-running any relevant system *updates* [rather than recommend
re-installing the system, which can be a major pain] can often make
things better as well. If this crashing always occurs, then somewhere
some software is probably damaged.

You may also find it helps to add a couple of megabytes of memory to
Word's memory allocation.

This I find hard to credit. There is no good reason why Pine should be
any less able to send Word 5.1 docs as attachments then other document
type. Binary data is binary data. At the outside there might be some
misconfiguration of MIME settings; you might want to check with a Pine
guru if you're having difficulties with attachments.

Cheers,

Peter
