Error 11 is "dsMiscErr (miscellaneous hardware exception)" (Cf. _Inside
Macintosh_, MacErrors, or THINK Reference). The two initial letters in
the error code officially stand for "Dire Straights", although there is
extensive oral history indicating that DS was used for a synonymous
phrase not generally considered acceptable in English-language mail lists
(although the first word, "deep", is unproblematic and the second word is
of venerable Anglo-Saxon origin).
Anyway: Error 11 is a catchall error code for a variety of errors, it
basically means that your version of the OS is not able to pinpoint the
source of the error more accurately. None of which helps you, the end
user. Developers are supposed to catch these things.
All of which doesn't get you further with the concrete problem. Apologies.

Sounds like a long thesis. Hopefully you're not managing the text as a
single Word document. If you're not already, I would strongly recommend
breaking the book up into several documents. A typical approach is one
Word doc per chapter. In Word 98 this is done with a "Master Document
with Subdocuments."
This approach has a little extra overhead. You may need to generate
bibliographies for each individual chapter and merge them manually.
Compared to the time lost for system crashes, this is a blessing.
Hope this helps,
Peter
