Hello,
We also got some problems connecting to PubMed that we could work around. I
use Endnote either on my laptop (Win98, Explorer) or my desktop (Win95,
Netscape) through the same network. Both configurations worked perfect but,
a few weeks ago, I could no longer connect to PubMed from the Win95 machine
whereas there were no problems with the Win98 ??? After much research, our
Network manager found a solution.
Apparently the Internet is grrrrrrrrrrowing very fast and the number of
relay stations between my computer and PubMed is also growing, exceeding
the limit of Win95. In fact, whenever you send a request through the net, a
counter is added to the request and counts down 1 unit per relay station.
After the limit is reached, the package info is destroyed. In changing this
limit in Win95, we could manage to successfully connect to Pubmed.
Just add the following key to the registry, in the folder :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP
add the key :
DefaultTTL = 8-bit number
Data Type: String; I used 40; this specifies the default time to live (TTL)
for IP packets from Microsoft TCP/IP. The default is 32 (probably built-in
in Windows, as the default key does not exist in the registry).
For more info :

n&FR=0&qry=TTL%20windows%2095&rnk=3&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=MSALL
Please beware in meddling with the registry.... and let me know if the
trick worked.
Happy 2001,
Pierre Duez
