I find that that best thing to do, is delete all but the appropriate RIS file from yoru filters folder and see if that fixes it. As you noted, the auto select does not alwas choose the right filter.

Hi Leanne, A little confused about your reply. Should the RIS file be in my Filters folder? I always save it to my desktop, and it's always the only one there. Tracy

Yes, you can save the downloaded file to your desktop, but the filter you use is auto selected? or are you given the option to choose one? It is the filter choice that Endnote makes, that is often not the right one. There are two locations those may live. The first - the installation folder - which on a PC is in the "often hidden" Program Folder, Endnote, Filters folder. Then if you downloaded or edited one, that would be in the folder specified in the folder location preferences (usually "my documents/endnote/filters" as default).

I deleted all filters but the EMBASE.com filter, and then I was asked to choose a filter. (Before I deleted the others, EndNote auto-selected the filter and I got no prompt to choose one.) I chose EMBASE.com (the only choice), and then nothing happened. No import at all.

My export options are RIS format, RefWorks, 2 CSV options, and plain text. I chose RIS. I did save the RIS file as a text file, which is attached.

The RIS export option may not be the best format as it seems EndNote isn't picking up the "T1" field (Title) noted in the text file. Have you tried saving the references as plain text instead then importing them into EndNote?

I have tried the .txt file option, and it does work pretty well. I suppose it's a workable solution. However, I do serve as EndNote support for approximately 40 people in my company, most of whom (no matter how much I tell them otherwise) will choose that RIS option. RIS export has worked fine in the past; it's just recently that it's been missing fields. I guess I'm just wondering what's going on with whatever filter it's trying to use. It also seems that the RIS files and the .txt files exported from EMBASE have completely different tags, which makes no sense to me.

Yep, I think Gecko is spot on, It really looks to me like Embase is using the wrong tag and not using the RIS standards. It has T1 instead of the TI that the standard RIS filter uses for Title. So either EMBASE should consider making a change, or you will need to edit the filter to replace the TI with T1 in the filter for title and make that the EMBASE(RIS) filter. Since I am still not sure how the automatic filter selection works in Endnote, this may mean removing any other RIS filters from the users filter folders? It would be great if the filter selection was more transparent, and this might be suggestion forum foder. I will attach a corrected version later.

I'm slapping my forehead. I had no idea there was an RIS filter; I'd just assumed it was trying to use one of the many EMBASE filters I have. I deleted all filters except the RIS filter and the PubMed filter (it doesn't seem to interfere, and I really do need that one), and it's working perfectly. Thank you so much!

Okay, so you don't see record number for several references in the library made/opend by EN X3? Is your X3 demo version or licensed version? I'm not sure but demo version might have limitation about the number of references it can handle. Besides, when you open EN ver 5 file by EN X3, you probably saw some "warning messages" saying you can't go back. The file format of Endnote was changed drastically when ver 8 was released. So, once you open the library made by <v7, using >v8, then the library will have -converted tag, and you can't go back. Your problem may be somewhere around these things.

I have a licensed version, and I don't think I have an inordinate amount of citations (about 1500). Perhaps, as you suggested, there was something lost in the progression of versions and I will now have to go through the tedious task of opening each file and assigning a new record number. I did read somewhere that when saving a library, it is important to have both the .enl as well as a corresponding data file. I don't know where to find this data file - could this have something to do with it? Do you know what the purpose of the data file is?

I am not sure why you feel "tedious" because record number is automatically assigned by Endnote, and it's been that way from the birth of Endnote. Users actually can't change, manipulate, or edit record number. So, you have the field you made back then, like "record number" by yourself? .data folder contains information associated with library (.enl) file. The files inside look like linking information, commonly found in relational databases, and information about group, indexing, and some file attachments like PDFs. You always need to move/copy these .enl and .data folder together. They should be located in the same folder your .enl is located.

It is tedious because of this: I have a folder which contains pdf's of all 1500 references. I saved these pdf's as the record number from endnote. Thus, when I go to endnote and find an article of interest, I could simply go to this folder and find my article through cross-referencing with the record number. However, seeming none of my entries in endnote currently have a record number, I have no way of knowing which of the 1500 pdf's in the folder is the document I am trying to locate.

every record has a record number. When you open the record, that number is in the title bar. You can view the record number by changing your preferences - library display and add the record number to one of the fields to display. It is also the number in the curly brackets when you insert a citation. So if you haven't moved files from an old library to a new library, the record number will be the same. Don't import them, just open the library and it will convert them and the record numbers will remain the same.

If you use direct export, the references are being exported in this format: TY - JOUR Y1 - 2009 VL - 50 IS - 5 SP - 959 EP - 965 JF - Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis JO - J. Pharm. Biomed. Anal. A1 - Huang, L. A1 - Jayewardene, A.L. A1 - Li, X. A1 - Marzan, F. A1 - Lizak, P.S. A1 - Aweeka, F.T. AD - Aweeka, F.T., Department of Clinical Pharmacy, School of Pharmacy, University of California, San Francisco, CA 94110, United States T1 - Development and validation of a high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry method for the determination of artemether and its active metabolite dihydroartemisinin in human plasma KW - ammonium formate KW - artemether KW - artemether plus benflumetol KW - artemisinin KW - dihydroartemisinin KW - article KW - calibration KW - controlled study KW - drug blood level KW - drug determination KW - elution KW - high performance liquid chromatography KW - human KW - human experiment KW - normal human KW - priority journal KW - process development KW - product recovery KW - quantitative analysis KW - solid phase extraction KW - tandem mass spectrometry KW - validation process KW - volunteer KW - coartem N2 - To study the pharmacokinetic profile of artemether in children and in the context of antiviral drugs for HIV infected patients co-infected with malaria, an LC-MS/MS method was developed and validated to simultaneously determine artemether and its metabolite dihydroartemisinin in human plasma. Using artemisinin as the internal standard, 0.5 mL samples were processed with solid phase extraction (Waters Oasis(registered trademark) HLB column), the elutes were directly injected onto a C18 LC column (Waters, Symmetry(registered trademark), 150 mm null 4.6 mm, 5 (mu)m). Mass detection utilized ESI+ as the ionization mode and MRM as the quantitation mode. In respect to the low ionization capacity of artemether, ammonium formate was added to the LC mobile phase to facilitate ionization (M+NH4+). The calibration range was 2-200 ng/mL. The recovery was 73-81% for artemether and 90-99% for dihydroartemisinin. The validated method was applied to analysis of clinical samples with results in good agreement with an existing method. ER - As you will see, the full journal title is in the JF field, and the abbreviated journal title is in the JO field. If you are using EndNote 9, there is a helper application called Web Export Helper which tells EndNote to import this file using the RefMan RIS filter. If you open that filter for editing, and go to the template for Journal Article, can you identify the problem? Is the JF tag listed and correctly mapped to the Journal field? If not, edit the filter, close EndNote, reopen and try the direct export again. Alternatively download the latest version of the filter from the EndNote website. It should be backwardly compatible with EndNote 9. There is also the possibility that older references on the Embase database are tagged differently. I only tested some recent references, and they imported correctly using the RefMan RIS filter supplied with EndNote X3.

I use the free WorldCat web database. On that version, you set up an account, save references to a list, go to your list, and click on the "Citations View" tab. From there you can export the references. The "to EndNote" option seems to be the same as the "as RIS" option: they both produce text files which can be imported with the RefMan RIS filter. I don't know if this helps you.

The free version of WorldCat is here, RIS is a standard format for formatting bibliographical references. It is widely used by databases for exporting references. You can see the format here, Any references in this format can be imported into EndNote using the filter called RefMan RIS.

The different versions of the subfield must all be on the same line in the filter template. Versions with distinctive literal text (such as vol. or no.) or distinctive punctuation come first. The version with no distinctive text or punctuation comes last. So for example the 773 tag might look like this: 773 $aJournal$dYear$gVol. Volume$gv. Volume$rno. Issue$rIssue$qpp. Pages$qp. Pages$qPages Remember that you will only have one 773 line in the filter template. MARC filters are different from other filters, where you might have several different SO lines in the template. With a MARC filter you only have one line for each numerical tag (100, 245, 773, etc.), and multiple variants within that tag for the subfields (if necessary). Hope this helps.

You want to export the whole library to a document (rtf) making sure the correct style is selected in the lower right hand corner. Then paste it at the end of your document.

Another way is to go to Endnote, use Ctrl+A to select all references, use Ctrl+K to "Copy Formatted". Before Ctrl+K, make sure output style you desire is selected. Then go to the end of Word document, "Paste special" and choose "unformatted text". This "formatted copy&paste" won't create link between Endnote references and Word document. Also, the order of the references may not be the one you want.

I realize this is an old-ish thread but it perfectly addresses my problem. I recently upgraded from EndNote9 to X3. Am disappointed at how relatively little seems to have changed through several versions of EndNote. In particular, to judge from this thread, there is still no way I can change selected words in the titles of references to italic format ? a simple search text and replace format as has been available in most text handling software for the past 20 years. The options in the Change Text dialog box are truly pathetic for such a mature program as EndNote. Scientific work is awash with needs for text formatting and special characters, and EndNote is supposed to cater for precisely that type of situation. Is any progress expected on Change Text options soon? The irony is not lost on me that in typing this message for a mere discussion forum I'm provided with facilities for font selection and format, text alignment and tons of other options. If this is provided in a free discussion forum software why is it difficult to implement in the EndNote software I've paid good money for??!

Thank you Leanne for reply. I thing it is a bug as it sometimes imports and sometime doesn't ! Maybe problem or conflict with word/vista...! By the way, could I import abstract for references that already exist in the library ? I mean without new request for references ! (Oh! maybe this could be a suggestion for the X4 version: Be able to connect to Pubmed and pick up abstracts for the references that lack their abstract ! For example if I have in my library 10 references but without abstract, it would be timesaver to select them all (or individually) and ask Endnote to pick up their corresponding abstracts in pubmed, if available anyway ! I'll post this in the suggestion thread !

I have tried two options: 1. I export the data from JabRef as ?Endnote(*.txt)? and import them to EndNote as ?Tab Delimited? 2. I export from JabRef as ?RIS(*.ris)? and import to EndNote as ?Reference Manager (RIS)? Both ways produce the same results as mentioned before.

OK, I see. My guess is that the missing fields get lost before the EndNote import, when the BibTeX references are converted by JabRef into RIS or the EndNote format. So the problem is caused by the JabRef export filters, and should be reported to the JabRef help forum or the jabref-users mailing list.
