Subject: Endnote X3 Mac problem! Author: arneolav (New User) Date: 11-15-2009 11:30 PM Hello, hope somebody can help me out with this:   I use Endnote X3 together with Word on my Mac. As I write my article, I wish to edit one of my citations inserted into Word, so that they include a page number. I open the edit citation option by right-clicking the citation in the text, and in the Edit Citation box that appears, I enter the page number. So far so good.   But upon entering "insert" I am presented with the following error message:  "No matching references found for "Cope, 1999, Multiliteracies (...)". Thus, I'm not able to enter the page numbers into the citation.   What bugs me is that the citation I'm trying to edit is NOT the reference called "Cope, 1999 etc.", although it appears as a citation elsewhere in the text.   Anybody?

It worked fine the first time I used it, but now everytime I try to insert a citation I get an error message with "invalid class string".  I have tried everything possible, the instructions on the endnote website didnt help, I uninstalled and installed endnote again, I tried logging on as an administrator and trying to run it, I took it off word and then put it back on, and NOTHING has worked! I am trying to write my thesis and installed the new version of Endnote as I was promised it was a hassle free switch over from older versions and I wouldnt have any problems! If anyone can help me I would be so grateful as I am going INSANE!! Thanks, Anna

Author: cactus (New User) Date: 11-30-2009 07:50 PM Hello all,   This morning, I installed 2 windows updates (KB973687 and KB976098).   I  then started working with Endnote - Windows XP, MS Word 2003, Endnote X2.    So far, I have had no issues with end note on this machine (it has been installed for the last 6 months). I have worked with large documents containing 300+ references, and small documents. No issues....   Well today, my problems started. I got the "unknown error" message. This comes up  when I try and change the page number of a reference by clicking on 'Edit Citation'.Once I enter the page number and press ok, the error happens. It doesn't happen every time I change the page number - just occasionally. Word then crashes, and restarts... If you have not been saving regularly, you are indeed doomed.   After reading and following the recommendations in an endnote support document (http://www.endnote.com/support/Faqs/CWYW/faq53.asp), I thought things would be fine. Sadly the error continued.   I then realised that this issue only started after those two windows updates were installed earlier in the morning.   I have now uninstalled the windows updates and I am seeing if the error comes up again...   Since it doesn't happen every time I change a page number, it is hard to replicate.     KB973687's description says: "Install this update to prevent applications from sending too many HTTP requests while a well-known Document Type Definition (DTD) is included. "   KB97609's description says: "Install this update to resolve issues caused by revised daylight saving time and time zone laws in several countries."   I was curious, has anyone else suffered from this error since installing windows updates KB973687 and KB976098? The two updates are linked since one will not uninstall properly without also uninstalling the other.

I have figures in the body of the document, citing the figures in-text, such that figures appear after immediately afetr the citation say after the paragraph. I have Figure number and Captions. Style used in document is Numbered. Question - How do I generate a list of figures. My references appear as a list at the end of the document, but I do not have a list of figures.  Specific instructions on generating a list of figures or table of figures is greatly appreciated. Same question applies to working with tables in Endnote   Thank you

Subject: Endnote X2 on multiple computers Author: idickers (New User) Date: 12-14-2009 06:23 PM What files does Endnote X2 need to work on two different computers?  I am using Endnote X2 on my work computer and home computer (both Apple Macs running OS X 10.5).  To simplify life, I would like to store my libraries using the application Dropbox, which places a folder on my desktop that is constantly updated to a central server.  With Dropbox on my home and work machines, I should be able to seamlessly move work projects back and forth.  Is the library all that I need to store in the Dropbox folder?  I know in older versions of Endnote I had to keep track of a couple of additional folders.

Subject: Endnote Year 2010 problem ??: Test resuts Author: myoshigi (Guru) Date: 12-19-2009 01:17 PM Hi All,    I tested several earlier EN versions for Windows to see if they can import 2010 appropriately from Pubmed using MEDLINE export and import by dafault filters (not by custom made filters or connection files). My tests indicate that all the earlier versions exept for X3 are not able to import year beyond 2010.   I changed date import tags of the following filter files: MEDLINE (Ovid), MEDLINE (SP), MEDLINE (OvidSP), Pubmed (NLM). All of them were the original filters came with each version, not the one modifed by myself. These filters use either YR, SO, or DP tags, and use smart parsing if either of them cannot import year data. So, I edited a text file, exported from recent Pubmed citations, and changed only the year in these lines, like changing from 2009 to 2010 in both DP and SO lines, or 2010 for DP line leaving SO line as 2009, etc. Then, imported to temporary endnote library. When DP or YR lines are changed to 2010, and SO line has 2009, year was imported as 2009. If both lines of DP (YR) and SO lines were changed to 2010, year was not imported and became blank. All versions from 9 to X2 showed the same problem. Only X3 imported 2010 correctly.   I tested only Windows versions immediately available, even I have most of old-older versions like 2.0 through 8 for both Mac and Win. But I don't think it was necessary to test them. By the way, Help files mention that only four digit data 1### or 200# are imported, as johneast pointed out. Interestingly, the help file of X3 still mentions in the same way, but X3 imported 2010 appropriately.   Anyway, that's it. Let me know if anyone else can reproduce my results or get results differently in different environment. This was not an exaustive test, but rather a short test. However, the test indicated a serious problem, Thomson Reuters may need to consider a patch, if this is true.   My testing environment was as follows. Windows XP Pro, SP3. No MS Office installed. Oo.org 3.1 installed. Endnote version tested: 9, X, X1, X2, and X3   Best regards,

Subject: Endnote 2010 DEFECT Author: myoshigi (Guru) Date: 12-21-2009 03:10 PM Endnote team @ Thomson Reuters:   Now, I found the FAQ of the 2010 problem is among the top of the "Hot Issues" in the support page.   And it clearly says:   EndNote X through 8 are no longer supported, and will require an upgrade to the current version to correct the issue.   Your team needs to realize, this is something like car shopping. Some people buy and sell a brand new car every other year, to look for a new and modern look, "slightly improved" functions, and continuous warranty support. Some people buy a car and keep it forever until the car "stops" running. I'm the former for Endnote, and the latter for car shopping.   My adjacent labs, throughout the building, still use version X, A LOT. Why they are using older versions? Obviously they can afford it. But they don't upgrade, because they don't find legitimate reasons to upgrade! The car is still running fine. What they need from Endnote is basically IMPORT function and bibliography formatting function (+several key output styles), and THAT'S IT! As long as these functions are working (i.e. they can drive the car), they don't mind using old version (i.e. driving old looking cars). In a sense, Endnote has already been commoditized for them.   Here's the change. Post-docs and students in their labs find out Endnote import function doesn't correctly import papers published in 2010. They look for reasons and solutions, and find out the FAQ (or come to me for suggestions).  The engine of their Endnote is pretty much "stop and go", and very frustrating to drive. Manufacture (Thomson Reuters) says, "Your car is out of warranty, and no parts can fix the problem" so you need to buy a brand new car from them. It costs $100 for "every" license they own.   Here's my suggestions. "Oh, if you are using Endnote just for creating 50-100 references from Pubmed, and format bibliography for the current manuscript, there is an excellent alternative like Zotero, and it is free."   "Besides, the manufacture made the Endnote engine such that it stops working when the year hits 2010. It's been cleary writtin in the Help manual, and they knew that from the time they made it."  Their response is "WHAT?!?"   And I will also say, "If Microsoft stops supporting XP in 2013, the OS becomes unsafe (i.e. roads are unsafe to drive). At that point, you would want to upgrade your Endnote that runs on the Win 7 (i.e. renovated, safer, and slightly better roads), but you can probably keep using Zotero, because it'll get more user base, and timely improvements and bug fixes."   You know what? They'll find out they don't need to upgrade Endnote now and 2013 as well. They don't find legitimate reasons to do that. If it is normal wear and tear issues (e.g. running on unsafe OS), they would have upgradeded. But the Endnote engine simply stopped working after 4 years, and the manufacture designed the engine that way. What a poor engineering.   This is how you lose 50 or more licensees with this "fixable", but "regrettable" issue. Your team has been marketting this software for two decades (?) world wide. It is truely amazing you don't realize this "simple" prediction.

Everything was great (with the Mac, which I use almost exclusively now) until last week. For some days now, whenever I try to cite while writing in a Word (2004) document, EndNote 2 just doesn't respond, and then crashes. I relaunch it when prompted, and try again, and it crashes again. The third time, it crashes, prompts to reset and relaunch. And then again crashes, crashing Word with it.   This whole thing started when I had already been working on a document for several hours, and I know I didn't do anything at all different. I'm extremely frustrated, obviously. What's wrong suddenly, does anyone know? And how can I fix it? I tried trashing the application folder and installing it again but that hasn't helped. (Actually, I don't even know if it did reinstall correctly or not -- it did go through the full process on the screen and everything, but when I launched it, it automatically picked up the endnote directory that I was using.)    Please help!!!

Subject: EndNote X02 toolbar changes from EndNote to EndNote Web Author: ilenet (New User) Date: 01-05-2010 03:52 PM I've had this problem off and on for a while, but now, I can't seem to fix this.  We're using Word XP with EndNote X.0.2.   I give the user admin rights and install the X.0.2 update, and everything looks ok.  I remove the rights, and it seems like it will work for a day or so, then the Word toolbar changes to EndNote Web and I can't change it back without giving the user admin rights and reinstalling the patch.   In our training room, as soon as I remove the admin rights from the training ids, the toolbar changes to EndNote Web.  Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?  As long as they have admin rights, it works correctly, but that's not an option I can use.   Thanks!

Subject: Endnote X3 automatically adds all entries from an online search Author: artsbiotech (New User) Date: 01-07-2010 01:01 AM This feature was not in previous versions of Endnote.  I know this because I have used every version of Endnote, since Endnote 2.  When I do a search of PubMed, Endnote automatically adds all entries that I search for into my Endnote library, even when I close and open my library.  As a result, I have 2000 entries that I don't need or want.  Then I have to remove them manually.  That is quite a hassle.  There should be a way to clear the search entries from an online search that have not been integrated into the library.  Also, search entries that have not been integrated into an Endnote library should not be saved.

Subject: EndNote X3 pdf problem Author: mbrigham (New User) Date: 01-11-2010 09:17 PM Since about EN v. 3, I have been referencing pdf's on my hard drive using the URL field, for example:   file:///C:\MyPapers\Paper.pdf   I just moved up from v. 5 to X3.  Problem:  EndNote X3 invokes Photoshop Elements to read pdf's, rather than Adobe Reader.    If I double click on a pdf file from my desktop, or from a Windows Explorer window, it opens Reader just fine.  But EndNote X3 wants to use Photoshop Elements instead.  Any ideas how to fix this?    System:  Windows XP, Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0, Adobe Reader 9, EndNote X3

When I install Endnote X3 and then run Endnote X3, then Word 2003 can communicate with Endnote X3. When I install Endnote X3 followed immediately by Endnote X301, then run Endnote X301. In Word 2003, I go to Tools Endnote X3 and Go to Endnote X3, I then get server execution failed. How do I solve this? (I have installed Endnote X3 using msiexec and running ENX3Inst.msi and then applied Endnote X301 via ENX301Patch.msp)   2) On working installations of Endnote X301 (ie where Endnote X02 is not on the workstation already), when I go to Word 2003 and Tools Templates and Addins and select Endnote Cwyw.dot, it says for example C:\...\Endnote\Templates.2416\Endnote Cwyw.dot. Can anyone tell me the full path location here? Note the number varies and may not be 2416 necessarily.   Thanks, Paul

I tried reinstall it couple of times.. and updated the EndNoteX3.. even I tried to install the older version EndNote9.. but not working.. I'm not sure it's the compatibility problem with word or windows.. The same thing happen when I wanted to switch from word to endnote..

Author: christian_weiss (User) Date: 02-04-2010 10:45 AM Hi!   I have the following problem: Out of the sudden, endnote tries to convert every pair of brackets into a citation (and apparently does not succeed).   Assume the following text:   "This is an citation according to the American Psychologigal Association (APA)"   -> When I "Update the Citations"Endnote tries to find a reference called APA in the library (which is apparently not there). This is quite annoying, since I have to hit about 200 Times "Ignore" when I update the References (or insert a new refernce, since this come a long with an update of all reference).     On another computer I do not have this problem.    Any Ideas what I did wrong?         (Configuration: Endnote X3, Word 2007, Windows XP)

Subject: Endnote does not Update citations Author: christian_weiss (Regular) Date: 02-04-2010 07:37 PM Hello!   Using Endnote X3 with Word 2007 I am encountering the following problem.   I added the following source to the library:   Author: Weiss G.,  Title: This is a tile Journal: This is a Journal Volume 1 Issue 1     As you might have noticed, I misplaced the "," within the author name.   As a consequence, Endnote used"Weiss G." as the family name in all citations (where only "Weiss" would have been correct).   Example: This is a text (Weiss G., 2009, pp. 1-10). Correct would have been: This is a text (Weiss, 2009, pp. 1-10).   Thus I modifiedthe library accordingly by changin "Weiss G." to "G. Weiss" (or "Weiss, G."- i tried both).   For every NEW citation I insert now this works fine (Weiss, 2009). However, Endnote does not update the EXISTING citations accordingly, but leaves them as they were before I made the according changes in the library.   Is there any other way than deleting all existing citations of the respective source and inserting them once more?   Thx a lot! (see figure) It looks as if a macro has not properly finished. This second empty window does not appear if I start Word2k with /a option, of course, and if I start word with all installed macros inactivated it also does not appear. But if I allow a single exception for 'Thomson  Reuters (Scientific) Inc.' the second window is there again. According to word's own macro manager, the only macros installed belong to 'EndNote Cwyw.dot'. Therefore I believe it is a bug within that template.

Subject: Endnote X2 on multiple computers Author: dwright1 (New User) Date: 02-11-2010 01:58 AM I have an academic who is using multiple Endnote libraries stored across three computers - An iMac at work, an iMac at home and a MacbookPro laptop.  The problem is this: If he updates an Endnote Library on one computer, he can't get it to sync with the same library on the other 2 computers. He has been using Mobile ME as his syncing software but can't get our IT department to support it. Is there a way to create a 'master' Endnote library in web storage space 'the cloud' and sync all working versions of the library with that? Is Endnote Web the best solution for this?

Subject: Endnote X3 recurrent crashes under OS X 10.5.8 Author: BillR (New User) Date: 02-21-2010 05:59 AM I recently purchased an upgrade download from X to X3, but have been surprised by fairly frequent crashes (MBpro 2.4 GHz intel ,4Gb RAM) not encountered with many previous versions of Endnote (starting before 1998). Primary library has ca 22000 entries (no attached pdfs or other documents) . Fortunately the crashes don't lead to overt library corruption.   A more troubling issue is that in trying the Find duplicates routine, the computer has hung in two separate trials (with no other programs running) after an hour or so  removing ca 100 duplicates. Several Gb of free memory remained, but one core rises to 70-100% utilization and it is no longer possible activate any Endnote commands. The Mac 'beachball' spins then halts, but nothing useful can be done with the program. Again fortunately, killing the program and then restarting it displays the expected number of entries in the trash and they can be discarded. Computer hygiene routines (Diskwarrior, Applejack, etc.) indicate no issues. Any advice appreciated.

Subject: EndNote X3 installed but Word>Tools shows EndNote X2! Author: TDaMoose (New User) Date: 02-23-2010 03:39 AM I just upgraded from X2 ro X3 but Word>Tools still shows X2. I have followed all the installation  and the X3 files are in the right folders. When I checked MyComputer>Libray>Application support>EndNote, I found some vry old files dating back to 2005! The 2005 files are ENdDefaultstyle.ens, ENDefaultfilter.enf, and ENDefultConnectoon.enz. There also files from 2008 that I believe relate to X!. These include Backup of EndNote CWYW Commands, crcx2.dat, and style cache v1.0. Finally there are files from late 2009 that I believe are related to X2.   I apologize for the long list. My question is can I delete or move to another volume those files that were installed before February 2010 when I installed X3.   Thanks for any advice,   Tom Casselman />

When inserting a citation in a text box (word 2007) the citation is numbered and inserted as number 1 although there are many citations before that one. It seems that Endnote somehow doesn't recognize the citation order when using a text box(?) Anyone know how/if this can be fixed?   Thanks   Kristian

My problem is that EndNote keyboard shortcuts do not work in OpenOffice. I can get CWYW, for example, to work with mouse clicks; however, if I type 'Alt + 7' to enter a citation (as you can do in Word), nothing happens.   Does anyone know why?   I have a suspicion that the appropriate macros were not included when making EndNote compatible with OpenOffice.   Thanks.

Subject: Endnote LOSES references in my library Author: jed1154 (New User) Date: 03-07-2010 04:14 PM I have noticed on two occasions now that when i close MS word 2007 and reopen it and endnote that several refernces that were previosly imported into it are gone.  WHen you unformat and reformat, it cannot find them.  How do I solve this???  Im trying to write a thesis and really can't have this kind of instability....   Is this something I caused?   Endnote X3, windows 7, ms office 7   Â
