In Word, try: Format Bibiography --> Instant Formating (tab on the right) --> Turn On --> OK It sounds like your Instant Formatting is turned off. Best wishes Jan Ove

Thanks Jan! I wasn't aware of that option. It does seem to negate the need for me to click to update the citation, and I have set the 'scan for temporary citations' to every 1 second. The citation does still initially appear with the { } temporary brackets, but after the second has passed it corrects itself. Is this how it should be, or if all my settings were correct should it really appear correctly straight away? Thanks again for your help, it is much appreciated. Emma
